ok I heard someone say on this that Les Claypool was a way better bassist than Cliff. Yes, maybe he was a little more skilled but he was more just showing off than actually making it sound good. I think that Les was more or less just telling everyone "look at me guys, i can play bass like a God" where Cliff knew when to step back and support the other instruments (remember, bass is part of the rhythm section, but when he did solos like this one and the little part in Orion, they sounded good. They have melody and you can tell that he knows what he's doing. He is easily one of metals top 3 bassists of all time.

Justin Chancellor of Tool is one of the best bass players ever, and definitly better than Cliff.

Blindrider...im so torn with what you just said. i mean tool and metallica are equally and easily my two favourite bands of all time, and Chancellor is one of my idols on a bass guitar, but i still think cliff is better than him...and he also happens to be my favourite basisst

Razormasticator, you're worse than Metal_Up_Ya_Ass_Jay. I cant play shit, but I appreciate great talent like Cliff when i hear it. for you to say that Cliff is nothing special is regoddamn-dicculous. Cliff is one of the few bassists to play through a wah-wah paddle and he played on up to 3 strings at once. I also like Mudvayne's bassist, but for you to say that Cliff sucks is reason enough for you to be stomped into a puddle of mush and eaten by stray dogs. Also, I think it's pretty cowerdly to diss someone who's dead. STICK YOUR BASS UP YOUR ASS SIDEWAYS YOU DICKHOLE.

Have any of you guys heard of a man named "Geezer" from Black Sabbath, or Lemmy Kilmister. If your going to make comments on a metal bassist like Cliff Burton at least listen to something more metal than Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Fleaa's kick ass but he's not better than Cliff by any stretch. Styrper is more metal than the Chilli Peppers. P.S. I do not care for Stryper at all. I was just making a point.

This song is is probably the best Metal Bass solo ever. My 2nd favorite instrumental, second only to The Call Of Ktulu( also curiosity of Cliff). Seeing as its an instrumental, no real meaning can be extracted from it, besides showing Cliff's bass gutaur skills.

question:y r we comparing tool to metallica, they r in almost completely different genresi wasnt really into metal untill i started listening to bands like metallica and black sabbath, and when i heard this it pretty much became my favorite instumental

okay, you gotta realize something... cliff died early. who knows how good he could've been NOW. as it stands, this is a damn good bass solo. in my opinion, if cliff were still around today, i think he would've been just as good if not better as Victor, Geddy, etc... however, he's still a great musician and bassist. and how on earth is he overrated? hey, if you think he's overrated, at least he's actually good, unlike most overrated things...

Yer, there are other great bassists out there, but they all had a lot more time to do what they do best, cliff died so young and had so much potential.. hes like the hendrix of bass

As for the best bassist of all time, Cliff isn't BUT HES PRETTY DAMN HIGH ON MY LIST. I would have to say Geezer Butler.But Cliff is still my fav bassist and my fav Metallica member of all time( 2nd being Kirk )

The talk about the "best bassist" is as it's said... purely a personal opinion, there are fast bassists, there are bassist with great feeling, bassist that have great technique, great charisma and bassists that have it all and mind you it's not all about being the best, you need to fit in the band as well...still music isn't something you can measure.
