i like cliffs stuff, that nice electro harmonix big muff and the morley power wah boost he uses with the ric. that solo is nice and easy if you practice it and get the effects.... by the way there was another bass solo he never really got out there but it should be on downloaders like limewire... damn he was a really good bassist.. it sucks that he's dead but maybe death isnt that bad.. after all you never know for sure what comes next

This song is fucking amazing. I just learned it on bass (being a bass player myself), and you get so much more respect for a guy like cliff. Damn and just so you idiots know JACO PASTORIUS was without a doubt the best bassist of all time. Noobs.

This is probably the song that made me pick up a bass, I wouldnt say Cliff Burton is the best bass player in the world but him and Steve harris are the best Metal bassists. there are other Great bass players out there, (Les , Flea, Geddy, ect) but noone can compare to Cliff burton's bass solo, not only that but all the amazing harmonys in the old metallica songs.

Les auditoned for Metallica's bassist but for some reason he did not actually join. He was a childhood friend of Kirk

Cliff was great, and better than Jason, but Jason was still a good bassist. Don't thrash him so much.

Dude, this song is totally about the apocalypse to come. I mean, bass is the sound of evil, and the rampant bass soloing stands for the chaos of death all about.

MardyAss, jebus81 , are right, anyways yeah there are faster and very skilled bassist out there, like billy sheehan, but Cliff wasn't the super shredder type, he made some great stuff look at Master of Puppets for example

Man i love this solo. If Cliff was still alive, then there would be so many fucking awesome metallica albums out there for us. He wrote some of the best music i have ever heard. Here's to cliff!
I think Cliff would be real cut up about St Anger, and even more so about that fucking shit featuring Ja Rule. He would have never sold out or even let metallica head in the direction they did.

Jack Knife makes a great point. I don't care how good a bass player you are, you suck if you don't fit you're band.

Victor Wooten, Cliff Burton, Les Claypool, Flea are all awesome in my book. Of course I've been known to lean towards catchy, simple songs over artists like Sheehan (although he gets respect from me for what he does, it's just no my bag). Not that Wooten is simple in any way, though.

Comment regarding old old comments on the first page:

Apathy, WTF do u mean 'they get a new bassist every time a better one comes along'??? McGovney quit cuz Mustaine was an ass, so they got a new one. Burton died, so they got a new one. Newsted got fed up with Hetfield, so they got a new one. That's it dude. Know what the fuck you're talking about before you open your mouth.

And TK, you're wrong. McGovney did not write this song. Cliff had already wrote this song before he even joined Metallica. James and Lars heard him playing it one night while he was with his old band and they decided they wanted him as their new bassist.

blah! this is an amazing song people fucking accept that. i've begun learning it with the help of my bass teacher. its not so easy.

it doesnt matter if hes the best bassist around or not. i must say that its opinion and in my opinion he's got to be one of the best ones. and would be if he didnt get in the accident :(

i will say that he is the best bassist metallica ever saw. its quite a challange to play all that without a pick. i think that above all, i admire his ability to play without a pick. metal bassist... the majority of them... do use picks. i will probably NEVER use a pick. it would just lower me a notch as a bassist.

i'm willing to be that the best bassist EVER is some nerd sitting in a rocking chair in his living room with a yamaha and a 10 watt crate amp playing some AMAZING song he wrote or something. undiscovered but the most talented.

ok, i didnt read all the posts, just the first couple, and if they all are like that, you guys are nuts. Cliff Burton ranks WAY up there on the greatest bassists of all time. Burton never used a pick, and used a standard 4 string bass. His work is sometimes mistaken for a guitar (the intro to For Whom The Bell Tolls for example), and is without a doubt one of the greatest of all time. He was a musical genious and everyone respected and listened to him. Metallica was influenced VERY much by Cliff, as he made them listen to many different genres of music. James was said to look up to Cliff, almost like he was his older brother, and Cliff taught him many things musically.

R.I.P. Cliff...

Metallica sure do get through a lot of bassists, don't they? Anyway, I kinda like this solo. Kinda gets boring after a while, but when the drums come in it gets better :P

Motorbreath - It almost sounds like you're mocking Newsted... :P Isn't that what you just said we shouldn't do? I mean, Newsted IS pretty unique, too... It's just too bad the bass is so damn near inaudible on "... And Justice for All!"
But Burton... Man... One of my icons, along with Newsted, Butler and Jones... And Kilmister, of course. :P

ok I heard someone say on this that Les Claypool was a way better bassist than Cliff. Yes, maybe he was a little more skilled but he was more just showing off than actually making it sound good. I think that Les was more or less just telling everyone "look at me guys, i can play bass like a God" where Cliff knew when to step back and support the other instruments (remember, bass is part of the rhythm section, but when he did solos like this one and the little part in Orion, they sounded good. They have melody and you can tell that he knows what he's doing. He is easily one of metals top 3 bassists of all time.
