i play bass and i listen to alot of metallica...and i still listen to this song because i'm trying to learn it...and it is pretty hard to learn since some of it is played so fast...if you listen to it when the drums come in it sounds like a guitar because of the speed its being played at...even if you don't like metallica or you think there is a better bassist than cliff then good for you...i know there are better bassists than cliff but that doesn't mean i don't like him or anything...its a good solo and for those of you who don't think so then i would like to see you play this with your fingers or make up your own solo so if you don't like it then back off

This song is hella fun to play on guitar. Everyone should try it one day. But Cliff is a legend among many. Jason, compared to the classically trained Cliff, is shit. Robert, however, is better than Jason, but not as good as cliff.

So Stuart Hamm, can play incredibly fast. So What? I’ve just listened to the sample provided by Razormasticator and much like the works of Hamm’s buddy Steve Vai, it's a soulless cacophony! Just watch for whom the bell tolls live and see how wild the whole crowd goes when Cliff starts playing. Not just the first few rows, the whole crowd. Could Stuart Hamm's fret board gymnastics do that? I doubt it. Maybe make a few beatniks drink their espressos slightly faster, but that's about it. Cliff had the perfect mix of technical ability, innovativeness, composition skill and soul. One of the all time, if not the, great bassists.

for everyone saying that there are much better bassists than cliff burton you are correct. however, had cliff burton survived that bus accident, he would be the GREATEST bassist ever

James and Lars met Cliff at a bar, and James said he couldnt believe what he was doing with bass, amazing. Then they all joined up. He was a really good basist, sadly metallica started their steady decline after he died, but we'll allways remember.

Oh my god... what is everyone arguing for?..
For christs' sake, we're here to appreciate the music not to discuss who's better than who...

Aha I like the song, I do not care if there is a demi-god bassist, I just like the song, maybe someone will amke me listen to somethign much harder to play or by a more professional bassist, but i will like this song more. I'll make you listen to some classical music and tell you this is created by one of the best composer ever but you might not like it, it makes no difference, some songs have crappy lyrics but everybody seems to like them. As a premedical student, I thinnk the music at the begining reminds me much of Anesthesia, a very succesfull title...

fuck boys, ever heard the bass player in rancid? check it out he is great and shits on cliff burton in speed, but cliff had great feal in his music, its like kirk he is 3rd fastest in the world but many would say hendrics was better than him simply because heldrics had the "feal" very common in blues etc. but overall great song. and the new basist is lookin good. im assuming uve seen some kinda monster, they commented that he playd bass much like burton used to

Trust me, as a bassist, I can tell you that there are A LOT (!!!) of MUCH BETTER bassists around. A lot.'

U r clearly homosexual. 1st of all, there is no doubt by any rockers, or critics that Cliff is 1 OF THE BEST. Had he been around longer, he would b higher. Have u seen him PLAY this song? The fingers on both hands r going cRaZy!"

And you are clearly retarded. You go in every forum of a song you heard once upon a time on the radio and bash the band claiming to be attempting the "educate" people saying the same crap over and over.

Anyones hands can go crazy on anything, that does not take any talent. It may take talent to play like that, but it is a massively inefficient and a complete waste except to look cool to lame asses like you who cite things like you know what your talking about when you openly admit your not even that interested in the instrument your talking about.

If you want to talk about bassists listen to Jaco Pastorius, Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, Matt Bissonette, Billy Sheehan and yes Les Claypool, then maybe you'll know what bass is about.

By the way- I don't have anything agains Cliff's bass playing. I do think he was pretty good and brought some great unique things to the table, but I wouldn't say he is the best.

Well I don't know if you are retarded, but you do act retarded. You call some random person a homo for expressing a opinion much like you yourself do and then rant.

To Educate someone you would be bringing understanding, you just drill opinion. For one this is song meanings, not a musicians forum where the people would probably be interested in musicianship. Kids have and always will follow trends, what makes it your place to troll a bunch songs herassing kids and dictating what TALENT is?

I don't like Mettalica very much, so accordingly I don't know much about Cliffs playing but I don't dissagree with that he was great. I just don't like you and your lil self-righteous rants.

Billy Sheehan might not play anything of particular interest, but his playing is very impressive technique wise. If your studying playing, he's someone bassists should look at, thats why I threw him in.

I actualy am sorry about the comment about not knowing what your talking about, I read a line in your previous comment wrong and thought it said you wheren't impressed with bassists in general. Other then that, I don't retract anything. I would normally say shame on me for bringing this type of shit into a perfectly good forum, but you did finally post something of true merrit after your retort- under the "~~~~~~~~~'s" and I commend you for that.

Now if you want to continue this any further, please just e-mail me. I feel guilty for cluttering up this with this crap.

Hmmm best bassist ever... i dont know. I can think of a couple right off the top of my head that are amazing (Paul Chambers, Victor Wooten, Paul McArtney, Jaco Pastorouis) and while not denying that Cliff was good. He was not the best maybe somewhere in the top 25 (and Flea is good at what he does) (oh yeah dont know his name but the guy from Dave Matthews Band he is a prodigy)

the thing about cliff that is unique, is that his bass solos sound like guitar solos, has any one else picked out the second bass solo in orion? i couldnt tell it was bass until i read 4th solo cliff burton in the book, it aint the slow one in the middle, its after that, it sounds kinda like harmonied guiatrs
he was great at what he did, u cant not appreciate his skill, all those idiots who say he sucks just dont kno skill wen they hear it. red hot chilli peppers is not skill. its just stupid sliding and slappin, woode fuckin doo. u can not enjoy cliff, but never say hes crap, cos hes better than every wuss on here, even me.
steve harris is awsome too

Cliff was a college level pianist, a phenominal bassist, and on his way to becomming a really great guitar player as well. Kirk Hammett (Exodus, MetallicA) said that Cliff helped him write a lot of things for Master of Puppets. Cliff and Robert Trujillo are the reasons I picked up a bass guitar. I love Cliff's style, his basses. Hell I love everything about the man. (Trust a girl like me to tell everyone he's Sex on Legs.) Anyway, Cliff was very enique because according to Lars, "Cliff reminded us when we were falling into Heavy Metal Cliche's, and Cliff's hair and Clothes were true extensions of his personality." We love and miss Cliff very much, and I think he helped pave the way for a lot of people. But honestly I think we have to thank two extremel special people for Cliff's talent. Jan and Ray Burton, his Parents.

Why are all you suckers trying to compare Flea to Cliff? That's the most impossible comparison between two players of the same instrument I've ever seen. Fuck != metal.

Who gives a shit how well people can play? Every bassist that has been mentioned here fits their band perfectly, and thus are all great bassists. Comparing them is stupid.

You're all morons. Enjoy the song and shut up.
