Battery, metal bassists don't do solos like this anymore, because since '91 (with the exception of Metallica, Maiden, and the other old metal acts that are still around) Metal has been reduced to it's own stereotype: A bunch of high school drop outs who play the same four chords over and over as fast as they can, while the vocalist shouts in the mike. The only difference is there's no solos. In other words, post-Black album, Metal has sucked. There are only a few bassists out there that actually remember that solos are possible on bass, and none of them are really main-stream. People say they don't like load and ReLoad because of the changed sound, but really, they had been brainwashed by the crap that was spewed out by some untalented musicians who claim they could kick 'Tallica's ass in a live show, but never took the challenge when the 'Tallica boys said "bring it on".

I agree that Cliff was great (I do not play bass). It's just sad that his talents were only really displayed on three first 3 CDs, wich totalled about 12 songs (I could be wrong and I'm not count Justice). These other bassists that you've mentioned have been around for years and have had many many oppurtunities to show what they can do. I hope that made sense.

Bass playing differs from man to man and there are many different styles(Tools guy,Today is the days Chris Debarri and Metallicas robert trujillo are very different, prominent styles)they cannot be compared. There may be better bassists out there (Mu.Dv.Ay.Nes Ryknow srings to mind) but none of them could think like Burton. They can play better but they can nevere achieve his virtuosity.

Ahem... I have a few things (people) to address here. First off, Motorbreath: Jason simply played bass on "To Live is to Die", he didn't write it. The entire song is composed of several riffs from many of Cliff's notebooks, which is where the lyrics were found. Secondly, to the idea that Jason was better or even all that good: his bass playing was just enough to fit the track, never much more than a dumbed down single string translation of James' guitar riffs. His best original work was My Friend of Misery, which is more or less the same riff as Anesthesia, the song of which should be discussed (trust me, it's got the same notes in the intro, but Anesthesia's are played faster and run together). While not a technical bass player, i.e. quite able to play the bass but choosing lead guitar as my forte, I still listen in awe every time I hear this song, or anything off Kill, Ride, or Master. For Whom the Bell Tolls is a great example of excellent bass that goes underappreciated; during that part around 1:00 where the guitar starts playing the "dun dun dun dun" (E|3 2 1 0), you can notice the bass playing the same riff... with the E and A strings, hence a bass power chord. Does Flea do that? (Note: Flea's good at what he does, slap bass, but Cliff brought guitar sensibility to the bass.)

A unique individual yes,but musically not anything great.Still,at his best he escaped the root notes for a few minutes. He's no Les Claypool though.

I'm glad a few people here know what's going on. Cliff is highly overrated, even for metal. Sean Malone and Tony Choy are very good. And Cliff, just because he used "classical scales" (like everyone, I might add) was not a musical genius.

While he may be farily good compared to today's bassists, jazz will own him any day of the week.

Paul Chambers
Dave Holland
Ray Brown
Jaco Pastorius
Ron Carter
Stanley Clarke
Christian McBride
Gary Willis
Victor Wooten (although i don't really like all of his playing, he is a technical master)

Oh yeah, these guys own Flea and Claypool as well, although Claypool is fairly talented.

Please, someone please tell me that Cliff is either technically or musical better than these guys.

Other great bassists:

John Myung of Dream Theater
Jimmy Haslip: Jazzman!
Gerald Veasley: Jazzman!
Marcus Miller: Jazzman!
Ryan Martinie: Mudvayne [just listen,He owns Cliff]
Stuart Hamm: my favourite!

all these dudes own Cliff.I own Cliff,I can play anything he plays.I can compose in his classical metal style,so I own him. He can play,I wont deny it.But there are many bassists better than him.

Check out Dave Holland's stuff> he plays incredibly technically, and it's all on stand up.

I take it you've heard Classical Thump.

Cliff is obviously an amazing bassist and probably would have been one of the best if he didn't die so young... RIP. He never reached his full potential so you shouldn't compare him to bassists with 100 times the experience. Cliff was also an amazing artist in general.

R.I.P Cliff Burton
after he died the band found it very hard to continue on, james said that Cliff really helped him in the making of the songs, and new the most about music then any other band member, he was a really talented bassist
