Keep in mind this was the first of many sick bass solos.
Cliff was the best for Metallica and one of my heroes on bass.
If more bassists were like him then there would be no exceptional solos if people started busting these out. So frankly I say he was the best for what he did. Also he was young at the time of his passing at 24 he was amazing and a rare talent. Could you imagine if he was still alive he'd blow flea out of the water. Granted I like Flea. I just love Cliff.

I think the song is about a bass solo. The "Bass solo" part seems to tell you that it had to do with a bass and maybe a solo. The "take one" Means that they recorded it.

Cliff Burton was the best, all through high school and still to this day I love listening to this fantastic piece of music, it has such feeling and talks, well it talks to me anyway, helped me through some difficult times at school, I suppose you can say instead of hitting drugs to get through the bad days, I just use to play Metallica as loud as I could on the walkman.
He was awesome and it is a tragedy that he had to leave us when he did.

Rock on Cliff

This is a really really cool song and to really appreciate this song you should be able to understand or play music. The masterfullness that went into playing of this song especially on a bass guitar is a sign that Cliff was a genius.
When Lars and James where looking for a bassist they saw Cliff performing this and they where both stunned looking on the stage for other players but they saw only Cliff and immediately knew they wanted him and they wanted him so bad they moved towns for him

R.I.P Cliff This song was brilliant

It's about a horrible experience at a dentist's office that Cliff had. Halfway through, while he was getting teeth pulled, his anesthesia wore off and he was in excrutiating pain.

Haha, just kidding. Nothing more than an amazing bass solo by the late, great Cliff Burton.

About the people discussing wether cliff burton is the best or not.
He was already at this level of bass playing when he was 18 years old, if he had lived he would be the Joey Satriani of bassists and Metallica would still be AWESOME

None of this shit about Jason Writing "To Live is To Die" isn't true. It says right in the back of the "...And Justice For All" Album

All lyrics by Hetfield, except for "To Live is To Die" by Burton.

Sure, he was dead, but Dave Mustaine wrote part of the song "Ride the Lightning".

"There are tons of bassists better than Cliff!"

Once you get to the absurd level of talent of Cliff and the like (you know em if you're looking at this) it doesn't really matter. These guys have vastly different styles and different levels of influence.

If on a post about this song you write anything mocking the Cliff-man you got some problems. Tell it to your music teacher.

PS
I have much respect for Megadeth's bassist, but he ain't better than cliff

Jason's WAY to much of a goody-two-shoes. The reason he probably left is because he didn't fit in.

I also can't wait for there next album "Death Magnetic"

since this is a solo i guess its open to discussion. but why are we comparing bassists. this is a song written by someone who loved music. just listen to it and shut up. unless you youre worried about messing up your hair or hitting your head once the drums kick in. cliff is the reason i started listening to other bands like thin lizzy. im just a fan of music with passion not torturing the laws of physics. so if they dont bang their heads, kill em all.

This is just one of many examples how Cliff was the reigning champion of bass players. I don't even think I could reproduce the magnificent tunes of Pulling Teeth with an electric guitar. At least not in the way Cliff did...

Somewhere in the Heaven of Metal, Cliff is presently playing with Dimebag Darrell, Chuck Schuldiner and Randy Castillo in the greatest metal band ever.

Cliff Burton was a legend. He is still the greatest bassist in the world. Screw the rest of them. The two greatest Metallica members in the world were Dave Mustaine, and the legendary Cliff Burton.

Rest In Piece, Cliff Burton.

Everytime i read one of these "Who's the best" debates it makes me sick...lets get real people its all about personal preference. Personally Cliff Burton is my idol, my god, the reason i started playing the bass. His presence on the stage is phenominal and his playing and writing capabilities were way past his time. for the era Cliff reigned the bass he was the best...but you cannot take modern bassists (at least metal bassists) in my opinion and say they are better because guaranteed every single one of them has cliff as an influence.

dont get me wrong there are a TON of bassists out there that could probably walk circles around cliff ( geddy lee, geezer, harris, digorgio etc etc) but this whole debate of who's best is bull, everything depends on what you like. I am a metal fan and always will be so my "best bassist" is a metal bassist, but if you like jazz then there's no way of comparing the two because they are completely different genres with two completely different ways of playing.

Some have mentioned great bass players in what has become "Debate of Best Bassists" as opposed to the meaning of an instrumental. Jaco Pastorius, Stanley Clarke (I should need to stop with these two). Paul Chambers was also mentioned, and I'm sure others such as Charles Mingus and Tom Kennedy were mentioned in the endless comments I didn't read.

But in the context of metal bassists, you must give love to Roger Patterson (Atheist), Tony Choy (Atheist, Cynic), Steve DiGiorgio (Death, Testament), and Fabio Fecchio (Ephel Duath).
