Well...the deepness of this song can be measu-...eh, screw it.

Great bass solo though, it showed the late Cliff Burton's true talents.

Cliff Burton was a fucking awesome bassist. I didn't even know those sounds could be made with a bass until I heard this song. He also sounds good in "Ktulu".

Cliff was a great bassist, the best one that played in metallica, and why not one of the best bassist in the world... but not the best. there are a lot of great bass player, a great example could be FLEA (Michael balzary) of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I thinl hi is defenitly the best out there, and why not, ono of the best there was... but of course thats my opinion.
This song kicks ass though... i love it, and love metallica.
RIP cliff.

Cliff was not the best ever, Dave Effelson of Megadeth and Joey DeMaio of Manowar come to mind.

cliff was amazing. anyone ever seen cliff em all? it's near impossible to play metal bass with your fingers. most everyone else uses a pick. best bassist though.... nah. maybe jaco pastorius or les claypool. cliff was definitely a legend though.

I heard Ron McGovney, Metallica's first bassist actually started writing the song, and Burton just added to it. Who cares about who's the best bassist, you can't compare between styles, or really anything. Pretty sweet song though. Has sorta that classical pensive type feel or something, definately classical.

it has a classical feel because cliff would use classical scales to write his metal songs. when he did, it gave it like you said "Has sorta that classical pensive type feel or something, definately classical." cliff would often experiment with musical theory. And about the "best bass player" no one will ever be the best becasue there is always someone better than you at something. so maybe flea is really good, but whose to say some kid right now at the age of 5 can play all his shit already, maybe even behind his head!! yeah, there will always be someone greater and someone who has it worse than you.

Cliff was one of the best bassists ever. I agree with MEtalMessiah that there will never be a best, there's always someone better and someone worse than you. As for Jason, in technical terms he's not as good as Cliff was, but he is one of the best live performers out there.

You are all right, there is no best bass player. Not because there is some 5 year old out there that can play what Flea (why anyone would think he is the best bass player is beyond me, but everyone can have their opinion), but because the "best" is just an opinion. It is purely an opinion.

P.S. Hasn't anyone heard of Stu Hamm or Geddy lee?

All I have to say is that Cliff Burton was a musical genious, and songs like Anesthesia, Call of Ktulu, Orion, and To Live is to Die are the proof of his ability. Besides, his bellbottoms rule the stage.

I don't know enough about bass and bassists, but I do know that Cliff was pretty amazing. This song is proof. I don't know what MardyAss was smoking when he wrote his comment.

Cliff is one of the most talented bass players of all time. This solo is so unique, ive never herd any other bass player pull out a piece of genious like this. Yea, he may not be the greatest, but he's damn near close to it, and he's paved the way for many of today's great bassists.

I'm a bassist, have been for a few years now. playing metal with your fingers isn't hard, and playing with a pick just means you don't have skill on bass. newsted blows, cliff was one of the greatest METAL bassists of all time, this solo is one example

If you ask me, Cliff is one of the best bassits of all time as i have said before. No, i dont play bass, i play electric, but ive listened to enough music ever since ive been alive to know greatness with a certain instrument when i hear it. In my opinion, Cliff Burton, Les Claypool, and Flea are the nist talented bass monsters ive herd. But thats my opinion.

Cliff was one of the greatest bassists of all time because he had a Unique style. I dont think cliff would want us insulting bassists that inspired him or insulting cliff and promoting other bassists who were inspired by cliff. Lets just give it a rest and say we will all miss him and that 186 was one of the best and worst years of all time.

p.s- Cliff Burton wasnt alive when To Live Is To Die was written. Jason was the one that worked on it, sadly.
