Lyrics for Comfortable as interpreted by wherewulf

Comfortable Lyrics
I just remember that time at the market
You snuck up behind me
And jumped on my shopping cart
You rolled down aisle five
You looked behind you to smile back at me
Crashed in to a rack full of magazines
They asked us if we could leave
Can't remember
What went wrong last September
Though I'm sure you'd remind me if you had to

Our love was comfortable
And so broken in

I sleep with this new girl
I'm still getting used to
My friends all approve saying
"She's going to be good for you"
They throw me high fives
She swears the bible is all that she reads
Prefers that I not use profanity
Your mouth was so dirty
Life of the party
And she swears that she's artsy
But you could distinguish Miles from Coltrane

Our love was comfortable
And so broken in
She's perfect, so flawless
Or so they say

She thinks I can't see the smile thats she's faking
And poses for pictures that aren't being taken
I loved you
Gray sweatpants
No makeup
So perfect

Our love was comfortable
And so broken in
She's perfect, so flawless
I'm not impressed
I want you back

Basically, one of the greatest songs i've ever heard. :) John recalls a previous relationship in the beginning of the song, one that was "so comfortable and broken in." Obviously, this relationship has ended, and john just misses her so much. He has a new girl, but she doesn't compare to the old girl, who was perfect for him. This makes me so sad. It makes me think of how i compare all the guys i meet to this one guy I still have feelings for...its almost as if no one can live up to him, even if they're better people, with better values. like john said, " She swears the bible is all that she reads, and prefers that i not use profanity..." Clearly, the new girl was a good person, but his "rough around the edges" ex is perfect cuz she's more realistic.

i love this song. i can relate so much. recently, i broke up with my boyfriend of 3 years because i was no longer happy with who he was. he swore like a sailor, had a terrible temper, and had a sense of style that made me embarassed to go out with him anywhere. but i knew he loved me more than anybody ever has. i was completely infatuated with another guy, who didn't even really know me. but he was so perfect and seemed like everything i always wanted. in my own mind i would compare my boyfriend to him and how my boyfriend would never be like him. when i dumped him i thought that i would be able to find someone so much better who wasn't like him. but when i was alone without him i realized that all of the things he did were part of what made me love him. he wasn't like anyone else. he was the strangest person i had ever met, yet i was mad for him. being together for so long, we could talk about ANYTHING. now i'm alone with nobody to talk to and will understand like he did. i guess that we really don't know what we have until it is gone.

i absolutely love this song because i think almost everyone can relate to it..just remembering the good parts of past relationships. I think i would like it more though if he did not say "i want you back" because up until that point its not necessarily sad, its more just reminiscent and relatable..just saying he misses it but also recognizing he needs to move on..but then saying i want you back just makes the song really sad haha

I feel like the title of the song is so appropriate..he didn't make the title of the song "Perfect" for a wonderfully simplistic reason: the love between he and his ex wasn't perfect. They obviously broke up for a reason, and he is able to capture the post-breakup regret and longing that a person feels towards their ex in the aftermath. This song is about his transition from a comfortable relationship to a scary new life in the lonely world of a single person. As is natural, he seems to dwell on all of the good qualities he misses about her, while overlooking her flaws and all of the events that transpired which caused them to break up. He's also able to show that although a woman might seem perfect on paper (which might warrant high fives from your friends because of her) it might not mean that she is the right one for you. Great song, great lyrics.

There is a girl who he loves and can be himself around and same with her, they break up... he dates a new girl and shes the exact opposit but he has to get over his former gf.

"She swears the bible is all that she reads
Prefers that I not use profanity
Your mouth was so dirty"

... reminds me of myself. love those lyrics.

This song is so basic, and thats probably what most songs are meant to be. I would take this song as his dreamgirl, but he wasnt her dreamguy...at least not anymore. Pretty sure this ones a true story.

this reminds me of my ex-boyfriend. ironically we broke up last september. this song totally speaks to me. it shows how it hurts when you remember tiny memories of a long-term relationship. this song makes me cry every time. john mayer is my favorite

i love how this song encourages women to be who they are and that that's what will bring you true love. not the superficial bullshit

This song describes me perfectly and I have loved it since I first heard the song years ago. My mouth is dirty, and I definately can tell tell the difference between Miles and Coltrane. My props to you john, in my opinion, the Eric Clapton/ SRV of our generation.

"she thinks i cant see the smile that she's faking and poses for pictures that arent being taken" this simple line gives me hope and makes me feel happy in some way. Cus they are alot of girls out there like that and i didn't know at first i thought guys liked that and didnt notice that they were being fake. But i guess some guys do. And that makes me happy. I'm so luv'N this song!

This song is beaustiful, like much of john mayers music, but my favorite thing about this song is that the new girl he is with is so fake, and that hes more in love with the down to earth girl...im that kind of girl and it just really makes me smile.

i think this is all about breaking up with someone, and being with someone new who just doesn't compare to your previous lover. never listen to your friends' advice, cause it never works!

i realllly relate to this song cause i compare everyone to my ex and no one is on the same level as him.. even though everyone knows hes not right for me

i read the first comment and it hit me to my core. i love this song! and it just says so much about a relationship i was in. we were quite comfortable in it and everyone was so sure we would be together forever. everyone used to tell us that our relationship was perfect. but like wherewulf said "just because something is perfect doesnt mean it will last forever"......that is so true to me you have NO IDEA!

i never got the big deal with comfy ... it's good, but i don't think it's john's best song. "but you could distinguish me from jack johnson" from as/is makes me laugh.
