I just remembered that time at the market
You snuck up behind me and jumped on my shopping cart
And rode down aisle 5
You looked behind you and smiled back at me
Crashed into a rack full of magazines
They asked us if we could leave

Can't remember what went wrong last September
Though I'm sure you'd remind me if you had to

Our love was comfortable and so broken in

I sleep with this new girl I'm still getting used to
My friends all approve, say she's gonna be good for me
They throw me high fives
She says the Bible is all that she reads
And prefers that I not use profanity

Your mouth was so dirty
Life of the party
And she swears that she's artsy
But you could distinguish Miles from Coltrain

Our love was comfortable and so broken in
She's perfect
So flawless
Or so they say
Say

She thinks I can't see the smile that she's faking
The poses for pictures that aren't being taken

I loved you
Gray sweat pants
No makeup
So perfect

Our love was comfortable and so broken in
She's perfect, so flawless
I'm not impressed

I want you back

General Comment:No interpretation needed here. It's just perfect and comfortable love that's gone away. No two loves are the same and from experience there is always that one love that stays with you no matter where you go. Right person, right love, wrong time. It really sucks to walk this planet without your love. Even though you can still find happiness, there is always a thought in the back of your mind about that hole in your heart. Ahhh, maybe in another lifetime...

General Comment:This one's pretty easy to get. The girl I think he's referencing as the blonde and guys high five-ing and all that is Jessica Simpson. He's saying just cause shes the "typical perceived perfect" doesn't mean she's actually perfect. He's basically over it and wants what he had before. Something REAL.

General Comment:since as far as I can tell no one added the extra lyrics that were on the "Any Given Thursday" cd so I might as well...

"Thought you were my first love
    Just dumb,dumb, stupid love
Technically, you'll always be ahead of me
    Oh, oh
    Tell me why
I have to practice on you
And why I have to practice on your heart"

General Comment:I wish the guy I'm in love with felt like this.

I feel like I'm the girl who seems perfect, but the guy still won't fall for her.

General Comment:This song reminds me of my situation... I'm the first girl and he's with someone cos they all told him she's better for him than me... He still looks at me in that way and I know he's not happy with her, silly thing is I'd take him back if he got rid of her and asked me!

General Comment:The girl he is with now is proper and fake- boring! He wants his old girl back- she's the real deal! Like the line.." she swears that's she's artsy....but you could distinguish Miles from Coltrane".....Who wouldn't miss "a down to earth girl".....Anyways, kinda reverse dating pattern here...Usually people date the fake ones when younger and when they mature they seek out the down to earth girls...

General Comment:This song is definitely my favorite song John has ever played. I was just at his concert in New Orleans for the battle studies tour. He was having problems with the electric guitars or something, so we got to hear him play 2 extra acoustic songs. He played Neon and COMFORTABLE! we had eighth row seats, and as soon as i heard the intro i knew it was comfortable. I was praying he would play this, and when i heard it coming i stood up on my chair so john could see me. i was crying my eyes out for some reason... this song just brings out so much emotion in me. it was a really special moment.

well anyway, i think of this song as john having a relationship with a girl he really likes, then something happens and it ends. then he finds a new girl that he doesnt really fit with, but his friends and all are telling him that its a really good relationship and theyre perfect for each other

Song Meaning:Basically, one of the greatest songs i've ever heard. :) John recalls a previous relationship in the beginning of the song, one that was "so comfortable and broken in." Obviously, this relationship has ended, and john just misses her so much. He has a new girl, but she doesn't compare to the old girl, who was perfect for him. This makes me so sad. It makes me think of how i compare all the guys i meet to this one guy I still have feelings for...its almost as if no one can live up to him, even if they're better people, with better values. like john said, " She swears the bible is all that she reads, and prefers that i not use profanity..." Clearly, the new girl was a good person, but his "rough around the edges" ex is perfect cuz she's more realistic.
