I've been really tryin', baby
Tryin' to hold back this feeling for so long
And if you feel like I feel, baby
Then, c'mon, oh, c'mon

Let's get it on
Ah, baby, let's get it on
Let's love, baby
Let's get it on, sugar
Let's get it on

We're all sensitive people
With so much to give
Understand me, sugar
Since we've got to be here
Let's live
I love you

There's nothing wrong with me
Loving you, baby no no
And giving yourself to me can never be wrong
If the love is true

Don't you know how sweet and wonderful life can be
I'm asking you baby to get it on with me
I ain't gonna worry
I ain't gonna push, won't push you baby
So c'mon, c'mon, c'mon, c'mon, c'mon, baby
Stop beatin' 'round the bush

Let's get it on
Let's get it on
You know what I'm talkin' 'bout
C'mon, baby
Let your love come out
If you believe in love
Let's get it on
Let's get it on, baby
This minute, oh yeah
Let's get it on
Please, let's get it on

C'mon, c'mon, c'mon, c'mon, c'mon, darlin'
Stop beatin' 'round the bush
Oh, gonna get it on
Threaten' you, baby
I wanna get it on
You don't have to worry that it's wrong
If the spirit moves ya
Let me groove ya good
Let your love come down
Oh, get it on

C'mon, baby
Do you know the meaning?
I've been sanctified
Girl, you give me good feeling
I've been sanctified

    My Opinion:"We're all sensitive people
    With so much to give
    Understand me, sugar
Since we've got to be here
    Let's live
    I love you"

The original draft of Let's Get it On was political. The album was released in 1972 and one Studio Album after the release of politically What's Going On. Trouble Man was released in between but was a soundtrack to a movie with the same name. With what was 'Going On' for Blacks at the time, consider the lyrics I highlighted. So why is that everyone who post here only think about this song being related to sex? Read the entire lyrics of the song.

I think he's talking above love;but that love he is singing about is between Black and White; not man and women...

    Simply put..peace

Song Meaning:"Let's Get It On", with the lyrics, "There's nothing wrong with me loving you, and giving your love to me CAN NEVER BE WRONG, IF THE LOVE IS TRUE", is indicative of a LOVE SONG. Contrary to what many on this thread have wrongly stated, this is not a song about lust/sex, as much as it is a justification of such an act, when paired with TRUE LOVE. You can hear the emotional longing for this particular woman in Gaye's incredible vocals too. "Let's Get It On" - one of the greatest love songs ever recorded.

General Comment:Society puts such a taboo on sex, which seems counterintuitive given how prevalent it is in the media, advertising, etc... but what we are fed is a very different beast from what sex was always meant to be, which is an expression of two people's love for one another. Marvin says it right there: "I love you." And what a beautiful way to express that love! I feel like this song has always been a classic because it puts the emphasis in bump n grind exactly where it friggin needs to be... in the heart.

General Comment:all the best soul singers are now gone! First Gaye, then Barry White Isaac Hayes Teddy Pendegrass Curtis Mayfield not to mention most of The Temptations.

and I thought Rockers had short half lives!

THIS song was featured when Dr Evil "did" Frau Farbissiner and when Mr Mackey of South Park "Got it on" with Ms Chokesond**k. (we all KNEW he would!)

My Interpretation:This song is clearly about the rigors of Viking life in eighteenth-century Scandinavia. "Getting it on" was Viking slang for the ritual sacrificing of a goat in reverence to the Norse god Odin.

Marvin really chose to emphasize the heartbreak of Viking mothers and wives forced to send their brood off to rape and pillage the English countryside, the line "we're all sensitive people" is a direct reference to a saying passed down through Scandinavian lore (original tongue "Ragnarok yule'woad gwe'lheny") which Vikings uttered moments before plunging their halberds into the chests of farmhands.

General Comment:If you've listened to Marvin before and after this album you'll know that he was a deeply religious man. However he was also a very sexual man and this song is written from the perspective of a Christian male battling between his faith and his sexuality.

General Comment:I'm pulling this out of the back of my brain, but I remember a story about this song that I heard a long time ago.
Marvin Gaye was married to Barry Gordy's (the head of Motown) daughter, but was tired of the relationship and was in love with another woman. This was his "coming out" song about the relationship and the feelings he was having about this woman. Shortly after this, his wife divorced him. His next album, as part of the divorce settlement, he had to give all of it's profits to his ex wife. That album was titled, "Here, my dear."
