When I close my eyes
I can see for miles
There's comfort in my dark seat
And chaos in the aisles

These eyes are not your eyes
And these eyes are not the color that
Your arid eyes might be
No, I was not around
When those eyes of yours decided so
I refuse to kneel before the
Sights you choose to see

When I close my eyes
I remember why I smile
Under my umbrella
I'm an accomplished exile

These eyes are not your eyes
And these eyes are not the color that
Your arid eyes might be
No, I was not around
When those eyes of yours decided so
I refuse to kneel before the sights you choose to see!

If this is right, I'd rather be wrong
If this is sight, I'd rather be blind

These eyes are not your eyes
And these eyes are not the color that
Your arid eyes might be
No, I was not around
When those eyes of yours decided so
I refuse to kneel before the sights you choose to see!

If this is right, I'd rather be wrong
If this is sight, I'd rather be blind

Lyric Correction:actually in the chorus he says

These eyes are not your eyes
and these eyes are not the color that
    your arid eyes might be.
    No, I was not around
when those eyes of yours decided so
I refuse to kneel before the sights you choose to see!

General Comment:is no one going to correct the lyrics?

its "I refuse to kneel before the sights you choose to see!"

"When they chose to kneel before the sun could touch the sea" doesnt even make any sense. PAY ATTENTION

General Comment:When I close my eyes, I can see for miles
    (seeing into the future)
There's comfort in my dark seat, and Chaos in the aisles
(Drugs bringing comfort to the chaos of the world)
These eyes are not your eyes
(The drugs have taken control of your eyes)
and these eyes are not the color that
    your real eyes might see.
(Your sober eyes would not see what the drugs see)
    No, I was not around
when those eyes of yours decided so
I refuse to kneel before the
    sights you choose to see.
(Telling a sober person what the drugs see, they refuse to believe the sights because theirs eyes are not the drugs)

If this is right, I'd rather be wrong.
(If a sober look at life is right you'd rather be wrong)
If this is sight, I'd rather be blind.
(If drugs are true sight, you'd rather be blind)

General Comment:Does anyone else see this as a protest of religion? For me, when I hear this song, I think about how religion changes the way people would normally think..("these eyes are not your eyes, and these eyes are not the color that your arid eyes might be"). I think it's possible that Incubus was trying to protest some religion or belief, or simply state that they do not submit to it.("i refuse to kneel before the sights you choose to see"). I think Hilikmi really got the meaning.

General Comment:MorningView is what got me into Incubus. I thought it was simply amazing and groundbreaking (to me) to hear a song that not only had great lyrics, but was expressive enough that even if Brandon had recorded it in Mandarin Chinese I would have caught the meaning. This song reminds me of a bat. "When I close my eyes/I can see for miles", etc. reminds me of the way a bat is blind, but uses its voice to detect surrounding matter. The instrumental aspect is umistakeably radar-like.

General Comment:I think this song and "Out from Under" from the previous album, Make Yourself, are tied together somehow. They both start with a count-off, the music sounds similar (though "Out from Under" is funkier, cause that was their style then), they're at the end of both albums, and of course, the names: "Out from Under" + "Under My Umbrella" = "Out from Under My Umbrella.

General Comment:The friggin beat of this song is amazing. its like one of their best songs, if not their best. If i wasnt a cool kid and bought their cd i woulda never found it because stupid radio stations focus on the benjamins while Incubus has some true Gold...

General Comment:Its about having the ability to turn off to the world that is presented to you ("close my eyes, see for miles"=meditation). In a meditative state, a peaceful state of mind, you can definitely get a much broader view of your life ("I can see for miles"). Then we get to the confrontational aspect of this song - "These eyes are not your eyes, etc.." and I think this gets into him standing up for what he believes - that life is full of potential, but your "arid eyes" can't see that. To put it another way, someone else has a habitual, mundane existence and Boyd is at once confronting him about it, while at the same time denying the fact that existence is mundane at all. We choose how adventurous our lives are to become. Also, the lyrics aren't posted correctly, as pointed out earlier:
"i was not around when those eyes of yours decided, so i refuse to kneel before the sights you choose to see." - which is the very essence of the song - both confronting someone who lives a stale life, while at the same time explaining that life is what you make of it. To me, this is entirely true - and that which makes our lives stale is our own fear of changing, our own fear of the unknown.
