"JTR"

I see you now
Oh, fill me now, my friend
I feel it's coming down
My voice cries out
And I only hope that you're the one
My words will fall upon

I play my cards
But it's by the grace of love
That I play my cards at all
Come fill me up
Oh fill me now when I'm empty
When I'm all dried out

Rain, rain, rain down on me
Again and again
Rain down on me

Oh, I see it now
I see them all, see them all
They line up to drink the blood
I see it now
I believe the devil and the lord have been dancing all along

Watch that be just not the way
Left and right we're different, different
What live, oh, then to give, what to become to take your time, oh
What's this, oh, what to give to get home all alone
To save me, child

Rain, rain, rain down on me
Again and again
Rain down on me

I feel it now
I see you standing there like an angel
That fell down from above
I see you now
I don't believe anything but a billion years
Could make you what you are

Say, oh, God give, don't take away
Who is the one to break up, break up
Made it all, tears in the way
Hope to get me to break my time off
God give, don't take away
Oh, but what to save me, child?

Rain, rain, rain down on me
Again and again
Rain down on me

Rain, rain, rain down on me

General Comment:And whether the rest of you agree with me or not, if any of you have seen the movie, or hopefully maybe read the book The Watchmen.. John in the story is constantly trying to maintain the balance between good and evil. The name John is consistent in many works as that type of character. Just thought i would throw that out there and see what others thought about it.

General Comment:A little info about John The Revelator. John was perhaps Jesus' closest appostle having been given the title John the Beloved by Christ before he was given the title John the Revelator. He wrote several books in the New Testament including the Gospel of John and Revelation. I think this song is tied in stongly with the book of Revelation. The book primarily focus on the final conflict between Good and Evil hence the line
    I see it now
I believe the devil and the lord have been dancing all along.

The book of revelation can be one of the most inspiring and uplifting books of scripture if it can be properly understood. I think thats why Dave chose to throw in some of the lines that he did.

And if my opinion is worth a crap, I like the fulsom field live lyrics the best.

General Comment:FYI the alternate (and better) version of the song, is on the Lillywhite Sessions LP. This is the version that dave plays live. This LP is dave's best work, but is also hard to get ahold of, as is most of daves best stuff. (reason being dave live > dave studio)

General Comment:Well, Dave was a Quaker to be exact. He doesn't really practice religion but still retains the parts of his religion that guides his life, or so I've seen him quoted as saying multiple times.
The Lillywhite Sessions was indeed recorded prior to Everyday but the band didn't agree with the direction that the producer, Steve Lillywhite, was taking the album and was fired after having recorded 4 albums with DMB. The album was shelved, they went on the road for their 2000 Summer Tour and afterwards flew to LA to work with Glen Ballard on the shelved album. Instead they developed a whole new album of songs, released as Everyday. In 2001, the lead singer of the infamous DMB cover group Ants Marching, Craig Knapp, recieved a copy of the lost and unfinished Lillywhites, contacted Steve about the album and posted the conversation on his site. A hardcore fan forged an e-mail from Lillywhite to Knapp giving him the okay to release the sessions - it spread like wildfire, satisfying fans who thought Everyday was too pop-like. Then 2002, they released Busted Stuff, leaving three songs off the list and adding others. The band was quoted in saying that Busted Stuff was re-recorded to make the songs and the general feel of the album more upbeat. JTR, Sweet Up and Down and Monkey Man were the abandon pieces. Monkey Man was never played live, Sweet Up and Down was played early on, but never professionally released on a concert album and thus leaving JTR the only one of the three that you can find and purchase. So the story goes... Just FYI.
I prefer some of the Lillywhite Lyrics to the common lyrics that Dave uses now. But, how can Dave do anything that I won't like?! : )

General Comment:in my last post i also forgot to mention that dave also had a girlfriend named julia grey, he asked her to marry him a bunch of times and she kept saying no, if im not wrong i think that his sister passed away and he gave up on juia grey around the same time. dave was pretty depressed around that time, hence why lilywhite is like this, also remember his drug of choice around this time was alcohol.

General Comment:alright im gonna clear this whole dave/religion thing to everyone. First, his first cd was remember two things, and christmas song was one of the first songs he wrote. at this time, yes, dave was a christian, enough so to write a song about it, really. next as most of you know, dave's sister died, she was killed by her husband who then killed himself. it is said that after this point dave lost his belief in god, soon after this album he recorded lillywhite sessions, which is the busted stuff original, lilywhite was recorded before everyday, but it was essentially released afterwards, this is why busted stuff is considered one of the darker albums, he wrote did it during all of his suffering, this cd also had grace is gone, i think that grace is gone is about him losing his sister and losing his faith. people have said that dave's sister anne, was sometimes referred to by him as grace, and when dave describes his religion he uses the use grace to describe religon itself, or the greater being in religion, like a god. really a sad song actually. this is my interpretation, but i have put a lot of research into this cd, and what dave was thinking about at the time. so anyway this song kind of seals him losing his faith, he has also told people that his now agnostic. summary, dave was a christian, but then became agnostic after losing his sister.

i don't know why so many dave fans point to "the christmas song" and "bartender" to prove that he's a Christian, when he also sings lyrics like this. he's all over the place, spiritually speaking.
