I heard The Toadies say *exactly* what the song was about when they did Livestock in Tampa some years ago. They dispelled any hearsay that it was about vampires, but they did say it was the story of a perverted camp counselor coming onto a young camper.

Yes even the first time i heard this song it struck me as a song about rape, and as the song goes on, the person just even gets even more violent and angry at the victim. I'm not sure about the murder part completely...but this the one part that makes me think it might be:
"I can promise you

With dark hair
And soft skin...forever"
Cause you'll be dead! hah! There are ways of keeping a body intact, especially if there's water involved. And they're by a lake...
I watched a show about bodies...someone buried a man in a basement and the ground water helped preserve his body. Mud, ice, certain coffins...Keeping a body in their natural state is pretty easy. But who knows...it probably isn't about murder, but it definately is about rape.

Hey just to let everyone know I live in the DFW area in Texas. Possum Kingdom is a State Park on a lake called (wink wink) Possum Kindom Lake....it is not about vampires the winner is hoyden it is about rape.....an actuall rape from the 80's

This song to me, has always been about a vampire, trying to seduce a woman into becoming a vampire. She doesn't yet know that he's a vampire, "I'll show you my dark secret," and she finds out and is scared by him. He promises her that she'll stay beautiful forever if she becomes a vampire. He is obviously very attracted to this woman and wants her to be with him forever. In the end it sounds as if she doesn't want to become a vampire, so he starts to get angry and asks, "Do you wanna die?" referring to the eternal life of vampires. He promises her she live forever and he'll take care of her, but I think she still refuses. Now this is just a wild guess, but in the very end, it sounds as if he kills her, by saying "So help me Jesus, Jesus...." This is what I think the song means....or should I say what the song means to me. There will always be someone to say I'm wrong, but that's the great thing about interpretations....everyone is welcome to have one. Kick ass song!

Possum Kingdom State Park Texas. The band was quoted elaborating on a rape that was witnessed at Possum Kingdom Lake. Plus, the band is from Fort Worth. Coincidence? Don't read too much into the vampire hocus pocus.

looking about it now it does mean rape but for the longest time and still to me it kinda means like a guy finds a girl he dosent care about plans to take her out screw and get rid of her but finds a deep attraction to her as seen in the line "I will treat you well My sweet angel" (TomB)

i could keep beating around the bush here saying (and this is true) that it is about a rapist around the Possum Kingdom lake near the Dallas/Ft Worth area in Texas (where i am)....its not about vampires, its a true story, dont listen to the vampire nonsense

It's clearly about vampires or a guy feeling like he's a vampire (possum = 'playing' dead), asking her to join him in living forever: "You'll stay as beautiful, with dark hair and soft skin... forever". (I hardly think corpses have soft skin forever, KOOLKRIS.)

He then asks her if she wants to die... and live forever with him (undead).

if this song is about vampires, then why the hell is it named "possum kingdom"? duhhh i think its about obsession and murder he wants her to be only his so he's gonna kill her so she cant be with anyone else.. "his angel".. ohh and i also heard it was about necrophelia(sp?)? i dunno man but this song is amaaaazing its so intense and full of passion. love love love it

In origin, it's about the events at Possum Lake. In effect, to me, it sounds like coercing a girl into sex through psychological abuse.
