Lyrics for April 8th as interpreted by PLANES

April 8th Lyrics
Crawl across towards your window
I'm calling softly from the street
Always a lonely widow
Half awake and sleeping on my feet
I'm of age but have no children
No quarter phone booth calls to home
Just late night television
Inside my bedroom all alone

There is no use in waiting
Offer up your steps so I can climb
Show me all your figure paintings
Etched in the middle of the night
Let me stretch upon your carpet
Let me hear the rain tap on your street
Knowing I am safe on the inside
Blankets wrapped and drifting off to sleep

I've never really thought of falling asleep as an abrupt activity. It seems a fitting ending to any day.

I know this may souind wierd, but when I hear this song I feel that it's not really there. It's like i'm imagining it or something. I feel like I've fallen asleep while the cd was still playing and I've just dreamed up the song.

Sad, beautiful song about loneliness with a happy ending. Almost like Leonard Cohen or the Decemberists, but not really. A compleat original.

Also, did you know that "April 8th"'s debut was not on On Avery Island, but on the second untitled demo tape of outtakes from Everything Is.

Isn't this song parallel to the events of Kurt Cobains "suicide" (his body was discovered on April 8th)? I heard that somewhere, but I can't remember where.

It's surprisingly straightforward for a band that later wrote about making fetuses with flesh licking ladies, and magic and medicine in one's ovaries

Me and a buddy were talking about how much we loved this song as we listened to it. Then we realized that today was infact April 8th. What a creepy coincidence.

I could be incorrect, But I'm pretty sure April 8th is the day Shakyamuni Buddha was born. (that seems like a likely thing Neutral Milk Hotel would write about)

It's about a widow who the subject invites in from the cold. Plain and simple.

Kurt Cobain's body was found on April 8th. They say he died cira April 5th. What I'm not sure about is when Jeff wrote this song. I would imagine that it was wrote before 1994, but I don't know.

Picasso died April 8th. Maybe that'd explain the "figure paintings" part. I think Jeff just wrote this on april 8th or something.

I just read 'In the Aeroplane Over the Sea', a book all about the band before, during, and shortly after the breakup - and it confirmed that 'On Avery Island' was about a spiritual experience Jeff Mangum had with a buddha statue, so I think my guess might be correct. But who knows.

Avery Island is an island he visited which had a big buddha statue...

Also, as far as I can tell, the lyrics are nothing to do with buddha. So... :P

April 8th is also the date of the last chapter in William Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury.
