Lyrics for If 6 Was 9 as interpreted by capitol76

If 6 Was 9 Lyrics
Yeah, sing the song, Bro'

If the sun refuse to shine,
I don't mind, I don't mind,
If the mountains fell in the sea,
let it be, it ain't me.
Alright, 'cos I got my own world to look through,
And I ain't gonna copy you.

Now if 6 turned out to be 9,
I don't mind, I don't mind,
Alright, if all the hippies cut off all their hair,
I don't care, I don't care.
Dig, 'cos I got my own world to live through
And I ain't gonna copy you.

White collared conservative flashing down the street,

Pointing their plastic finger at me.
They're hoping soon my kind will drop and die,
But I'm gonna wave my freak flag high, high.
Wave on, wave on
Fall mountains, just don't fall on me
Go ahead on Mr. Business man, you can't dress like me.
Sing on Brother, play on drummer.

This song is about 1969 and then "hippie" generation. About how people were so concerned about conforming, except for the counter culture, and how the "business men" were trying to put down the counter culture idea.

i think its more about jimi being himself, and he would be the same "If all the hippies cut off all their hair", cuz like "Don't nobody know what I'm talkin' about
I've got my own life to live
I'm the one that's gonna die when it's time for me to die
So let me live my life the way I want to", no matter what, jimi will be jimi, and every one should take a lesson from him

If 6 was 9: It would be if the world was upside down. But I dont mind. This is a very american song. No group identity just me and mine. He is asserting and celebrating the self. An that time there were of course white collare conservatives, hippies and freaks. The freaks were total nonconformists alinging with no group and even hippies required conformity as a group. If 6 was 9 - if every foundation we have built this civilization on falls....

I think Robert has it partially right. I think Jimi was also discussing how the counter-culture became a marketable image and all of a sudden, it became hip to be a hippie. The same way Grunge became hip and fashionable in the early 1990s. There was a time when wearing flannel meant something (I guess), but after a while it was showing up as a fashion style.

Jimi is saying that he is a true "different person". You can dress and look like me...but you will never be me. "Go ahead on mister business man, you can't dress like me "

Yo, Robert Plant (yeah - like you're THAT Robert Plant!), how could Jimi be commenting on 1969 when he wrote and recorded the song in 1967? See the album Axis: Bold As Love, released in 1967, if you're in any doubt.
Jimi just wanted to live his own life and be free to make his own choices. So if the sun refused to shine and the mountains fell in the sea - so what? There's nothing anyone can do if those things actually happened, so get on with living your own life the way you want to....

thats what i thought, but its a sweet song anyways. i really like part where he sees the "white collar conservative flashin' down the street" and then later he sings "Go ahead on mister business man, you can't dress like me"

Yeah, I think this is about how if the world was upside down, Jimi would still be Jimi, and that no one else can be him. Of course, the flithier part of my mind has a sexual reference, but I'm not sure.

i love this song. it's possibly my favorite jimi song, but that depends on my mood. i think it's just about being oneself, with no regard to what everyone else is doing.

this is an exelent song! the true meaning is that everyone is held down by something like pper preasure(the business man). He says "fall mountains just don't fall on me" which means do what ever you want, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else. He says "walk on mr. business man, you can't dress like me" menas that only jimi can be jimi, and only you can be you. everyhting is subliminal, just listen and you'll understand.

i think its about him not wanting to conform to how all the "business people " are.

White collar conservative flashin' down the street
Pointin' their plastic finger at me, ha !
They're hopin' soon my kind will drop and die but uh
I'm gonna wave my freak flag high, high

during the "hippie revolution", hippies called corporate bully's "plastic people" because plastic was a man made product and wasnt natural. when he says he's gonna wave his freak flag high, its about not being afraid to be who he is.

I love this song, i mean the first time i heard it I didnt like it much but then the more i heard it the more i liked it! I understand u guys who though it was about the sex position 69. He probably meant that even if the world flipped hed still still be himself. In his time African-Americans were discriminated against so by freak flag i think thats what he meant. Any way Jimi your my inspiration Ill see you soon well actually not that soon but hey life aint so long!

hello i am a teenager who loevs music very much
i come home from school and play my guitar for like 2 hours then listen to songs and find out there meaning for like 5 hours
i have yet to come into any range of a scale of greatness as Hendrix, if 6 was 9 is a great song
when he makes his guitar scream in this song, makes me want to cry ( in a euphoric way)
his music really affects my heart and soul and i love listening to it
