Lyrics for Jesus Or A Gun as interpreted by sawg

Jesus Or A Gun Lyrics
Walk away, I walk the wire
And my fields are burning in the flames
Feel my way, blind in the mire
Struggling from your voice inside my head

But now everything's trying to drag me down
But I'll rip the sky from the ground
But tell me now, who's my saving one
Jesus or a gun

Stripped away my last desire
Nothing comes and nothing's sent away
Happiness I couldn't hire
Struggling from these thoughts inside my head

But now everything's trying to drag me down
But I'll rip the sky from the ground
But tell me now, who's my saving one
Jesus or a gun

All that's safer falls from my favor
When it's over who will cry for me

It's safe to say I don't desire
Everything you push inside my head
And I'll reject it until I'm dead

But now everything's trying to drag me down
But I'll rip the sky from the ground
But tell me now, who's my saving one
Jesus or a gun

This is a great song. I love the line "But I'll rip the sky from the ground."

Depressed obviously. He is confused on how to rectify his situation. Use a gun or live longer with some wisdom (some religion).

The part where he says "All thats safer falls from my favor, When its over who will cry for me" I believe refers to his thinking about killing him self. The next part "It's safe to say I don't desire, Everything you push inside my head, And I'll reject it until I'm dead" may be him trying to accept the choice of life and the wisdom that will keep him from killing him self.

I used wisdom so I don't explicitly have to say religion or therapy or what ever. . .

This song is about ACTION vs WANTING (prayer). When backed into a corner and it comes down to do or die, what REALLY is going to save you? Jesus or a gun?

"It's safe to say I don't desire/ Everything you push inside my head/ And I'll reject it until I'm dead"

^ Could be interpreted into different contexts, but given the title and chorus of the song, he's talking about religion and the way people are hearded into organized religion when they're children without a choice.

To shogunbown, I don't think he is depressed at all. It's not a song about suicide.

It's a song about beating the odds and believing in YOURSELF, and trusting in yourself above all else (supernatural beings included).

"All that's safer falls from my favor/ When it's over who will cry for me?"

By choosing to reject Christianity, he's choosing an unsafe path. He is choosing to live life the way HE wants to.

"When it's over, who will cry for me?"

When he dies, who will cry for him since he is presumably an atheist or agnostic? Will people refuse to mourn for him because religion blinds them to humanity?

And I agree with divican, that verse is killer.

It's about someone who has lost everything he cares about, and he must choose to walk the path of religion or pick up a gun.

He wants to know what will really save him, and in the end "All that is safer falls from my favor" and that no one will cry for him when he's dead, so he must pick up a gun and do something.

Pray all you want. It won't stop a bullet.

This song is about depression and the questions amounting from the religious programming that was shoved into his head. It seems to me the veil is being lifted from his eyes and he's not liking what he sees. Religion is not "wisdom", it's a means of crowd-control and full of lies. Turning to religion in your depression pushes you closer to the grave. He's beginning to see this when he writes this song and he's rejecting it,
"Everything you push inside my head
And I'll reject it until I'm dead".

Hmmm....

'If God does not exist, everything is permitted.'
- Fyodor Dostoyevsky

If he doesn't have a God to believe in he doesn't know where to find a moral code to adhere to. If this happens he has to take morality and power into his own hands, and is able to do whatever he feels like without fear of being unjust - that's what the gun means.
