TO ME the song is:
him not being able to decide if it's the right thing to do to walk away and let her go. they had something (it's not clear how much "a memory that i can't speak of" vs. "there was something we went through" and that they have been intimate) but they aren't together and it's not going to happen unless one of them does something. and everyday the possibility is farther away. but he fears that he'll always wonder about her. i think it says "this could be MY big mistake" the first time he says that part. Seems like "My" says more than "A".
she opened up her life for him. he treated her badly. they had sex. she found him out for a fake. sound slike they knew each other intimately. i love this song it sounds so good. before i came on here for the lyrics, i had them preeeetty wrong lol

after reading these lyrics i see a connection, bc they dont speak there connection is getting weaker every day.. they are drifting apart. or it could easily talk about the communication break down most of us experience at the end of a relationship, the lost of trust and the innocence of that relationship
i think it could be about a breakup, but to me it sounds as though it's more so about a girl that he fell in love with but could never achieve.
as time passes, he feels as though he's farther away from everything that they could have had together. he's afraid that she will turn into something that he never knew, but he's also afraid because he won't ever be able to find out. compelling song.
to me its about a breakup (obviously) where he's just been devistated by the loss. and the memory is holding him back, and holding him down. its a memory he doesn't like to even speak about. and nightly he just sees her when he closes his eyes, and thinks about their more intimate times. the memories are vivid and haunting.
but every day he gets farther from the time he was with her, and the memories of who she is fade. and as they both fade into different people he'll always wonder who she is. when at one time he thought he'd be there to see who she was to death, now he knows they'll die without having a clue about who the other is.
"and i think about you dying years from now..." really gets me... cause i think that about an ex... and it bums me out to think that the things in life she'll go thru wont be shared with me... and i'll never be able to share in her joys and sorrows.
every day, shes just a little more inaccessable, a little less of the person i knew, a little farther off the path we were on together. all the while wondering if this distance could be a big mistake...
