Summer time and the wind is blowing outside
In lower Chelsea and I don't know
What I'm doing in this city
The sun is always in my eyes
It crashes through the windows
And I'm sleeping on the couch
When I came to visit you
That's when I knew I could never
Have you

I knew that before you did
Still I'm the one who's stupid
And there's this burning
Like there's always been
I never been so alone
And I've never bee n so alive
Visions of you on a motorcycle drive by
The cigarette ash flies in your eyes
And you don't mind, you smile
And say the world doesn't fit with you

I don't believe you, you're so serene
Careening through the universe
Your axis on a tilt , you're guiltless and free
I hope you take a piece of me with you
And there's things I'd like to do
That you don't believe in
I would like to build something
But you never see it happen
And there's this burning
Like there's always been
I've ne ver been so alone
And I've, I've never been so alive
And there's this burning
There is this burning
Where's the soul I want to know
New York City is evil

The surface is everything but I could never do that
Someone would see through that
And this is our last time
We'll be friends again
I'll get over you, you'll wonder who I am
And there's this burning
Just like there's always been
I've never been so alone alone
And I've, and I've never been so alive
So alive

I go home to the coast
It starts to rain I paddle out on the water
Alone
Taste the salt and taste the pain
I'm not thinking of you again
Summer dies and swells rise
The sun goes down in my eyes
See this rolling wave
Darkly coming to take me
Home
And I've never been so alone
And I've never been so alive

My Opinion:2 cents... drooling over someone when your are alone. Motorcycle drive By. Ah this makes me remember the times when my friends would knock on my basement window when I was young. I think of friends. But say you are day dreaming of somebody...It could also be losing a person on purpose because of differences. Thats it.

General Comment:This song not only makes me really sad, but it also makes me smile, especially the beginning of the first chorus. It's so powerful and anyone who covers this song can't come close to having that feel of emotion that Stephan Jenkins has in his voice in this. It's a gorgeous song...i belt out to the bridge every time i listen to it while driving..no shame haha. It's always great to have songs like these to relate to when you feel broken over someone.

    my favorite part:

And I'm sleeping on the couch
When I came to visit you
    That's when I knew
That I could never have you
I knew that before you did
Still I'm the one who's stupid
    And there's this burning
    Like there's always been

...it's like the story of my life. the reason why i love 3EB so much is because they express how I feel towards life for me. <3

    like there's always been."

to me this means that although now that she's gone and everything seems different, everything really is actually the same.. like the world didn't change. just his perspective did.

"And iv'e never been so alone,
and iv'e never been so alive."

yourself is the only person who knows everything about you. having a good relationship with yourself is important, and you shouldn't need someone else to feel "alive".

General Comment:Ironically enough, i was seeing this girl who lived in NYC a few years back and our situation followed this song to a T. The last time I went up there to visit her i was sitting outside the gate to board the plane to NYC and this song came on. That weekend was the last time we hung out as quasi boyfriend and girlfriend. i loved to visit NYC but could never live there.....so weird how some music speaks your life.....we both were mature enough to know it wouldnt work out even though i was pushing for it more than she was...

    Stephen Jenkins is truly amazing....

Song Meaning:The song is about a guy and a girl who are just friends - but the guy wants more. He knows that she thinks it will never happen and that they are better as friends. Whenever he is with her he "has never been so alive" because he is able to spend time with her but also he "has never been so alone" because he can't be intimate with her, a feeling that is killing him.

I assume they both live in NYC. She loves it but he hates it. The only reason he still stays there is because he thinks there is still a chance they will end up together.

"And this is our last time We'll be friends again" most likely means that he puts it all out on the line. He tells her how he feels, and she turns him down (as he expected she would).

The last few verses is about him getting over her and moving on with his life.

Song Meaning:This song is so sad and the lyrics are so strong pretty much like every other 3eb song, i love them so much!

I think Stephan was with a girl that he loved more than she loved him, and he really wanted to be with her and probably wanted to marry her, but she wasn't into him like that:

And there's things I would like to do
    That you don't believe in
I would like to build something
But you'll never see it happen

He feels out of place when he visits her in NY; he knew that it wasn't going to work out. And he loved her so much that it burns in his heart to know that things will never be the same between them again.

    3EB FOREVER!!!

Memory:This song is perfect for last summer. I was seeing this amazing guy who loved to live life! We spent days lazing at his summer cabin, kayaking, riding his motorcycle, hiking, swimming, drinking... It was summertime love; there was no future for us and I still fell in love with him. In my head, I knew we would fall apart while we were still together. Yet I still gave him everything I could.

"That's when when I knew I could never have you... I knew that before you did, still I'm the one who's stupid."

I wanted more than he could give me in the end. I was ready for summer to end and to start building a life, while he wanted his freedom.

"And there's things I'd like to do that you don't believe in. I would like to build something, but you never see it happen."

We ended up breaking up, of course. I haven't talked to him since our breakup, but the time I shared with him is something I would never replace. I loved him without fear and he taught me not to take any day for granted and how to really be free.

"And this is our last time, we'll be friends again. I'll get over you, you'll wonder who I am."

I moved away but sometimes even know; when I see a motorcycle, or ride a kayak, or hear a song on the radio... I think about him... but then I remember some things are better left in the past.

"I go home to the coast it starts to rain. I paddle out on the water, alone, taste the salt and taste the pain... I'm not thinking of you again."

He taught me a lot about life.

"And I've never been so alone. And I've, never been so alive..."

My Interpretation:Okay, I joined SongMeanings just for this. Has anyone else read The Stranger by Albert Camus? I read it over the summer for one of my summer reading books for school. I can't help but see the many similarities between the book and the first two stanzas of this song. The fact that its in the summer time in a European town, Meursault's emotional detachment from his town, obviously his sensativity to the sun and light in general, visiting Marie many times and knowing that he will never be with her despite the fact that she wants to marry him. And in the chorus, the recurring theme of the burning Meursault feals from the sun, his constant feelings of lonliness and being misunderstood, and how he also feels so alive because he lives for pleasure and to get a rise out of things.

3eb is by far my favorite band and I couldn't help but see this resemblance. The song is so much deeper than those likenesses with the book and it is by far my favorite song of theirs. Has anyone else read Camus and think that Stephan might be making some references to the book or using it as inspiration? I've heard his explanation for what the song is about but we all know that he tends to not reveal everything that his songs are about and what they mean to him.
