I had a bad day again
She said i would not understand
She left a note that said I'm sorry, I
I had a bad day again

She spilled her coffee broke a shoelace
Smeared the lipstick on her face
Slammed the door and said I'm sorry, I
I had a bad day again

And she swears there's nothing wrong
I hear her playing that same old song
She puts me up and puts me on
I had a bad day again

She said I would not understand
She left a note and said I'm sorry I
I had a bad day again
No,

And she swears there's nothing wrong
I hear her playing that same old song
She puts me up and puts me on
Oh I had a bad day again

She said I would not understand
She left a note that said I'm sorry, I
I had a bad day again
She left a note that said I'm sorry, I
I had a bad day
No,
No,
No,
No,
Alright
Oh,
Oh.

My Interpretation:I see the mental health side of this song. I suffer from PTSD from childhood abuse, and this song explains how I feel more than any other. Little things can mess me up badly but I don't want to talk about them even or actually especially to my husband. "Putting him off" for me means avoiding intimacy because it is emotionally painful. "Putting him on" for me is going through the motions of sex or whatever because I know I can't put him off indefinitely. And he definitely would not understand because he has not gone through the things I have and had it scar his life like this. As far as the note, I can see the suicide aspect or it could be just that she is running away from the problem instead of trying to deal with it.

General Comment:So, I'm going to have to disagree with everyone here.
This song is about someone being cheated on. She is giving him excuses why she is acting distant and why she is no longer loving to him.
She's also making excuses for her disheveled look (which happened due to the affair).

    "Had a bad day again
She said I would not understand "

This is the typical 'cop out'.
When you can't tell the truth, and can't come up with a lie quick enough, you just say this.

"She left a note and said I'm sorry, I had a bad day again. "

Here again, she is not present, cannot explain her actions or her absence so she just blames it on her 'bad day'.

"She spilled her coffee, broke her shoelace.
Smeared the lipstick on her face. "

Here she is explaining her disheveled look (as mentioned above).

"And she swears there's nothing wrong
I hear her playing that same old song"

Here he is talking about getting the same old story/excuses.

"She puts me off and puts me on"

Lastly the clincher. She puts him off, she's not loving to him, she's not communication to him. She puts him on, from the old saying 'you're putting me on' as in she is lying to him, blatantly.

He is aware of the infidelity but has not yet decided to end the relationship, he is still in the mourning phase of coming to terms with the end of thins.

...at least thats my take. ;)

General Comment:I don't know if anyone else thinks of this song this way, but it's different for me. I think I understand where he's coming from. To me it's about the girl he's in love with. She has a problem either with work/the relationship/family/whatever but she won't talk about it. He notices her smaller problems and the way she acts with them. He asks her whats wrong but she "puts me off" as in make a quick excuse "had a bad day" and listens to his music "puts me on". "I hear her playin that same old song" as in making the same excuse everytime. I've been in a relationship similar to this, where the girl had basically built a barrier up from being hurt so much. That barrier is hard to break and at times, can drive a man crazy not knowing whats wrong. Hence, he's talkin to his psychiatrist.

General Comment:I have had some shrink tell me I am bi-polar. It doesn't take much to have a bad day. And this explains me to a tee. Nothing is wrong but the world can fall apart. I cried for an hour torturing myself listening to this song. The release can make it better. But tomorrow is another day...

General Comment:First off, I love this song. One of their bests. This song is about a girl who keeps things bottled up, and then when one tiny thing goes wrong, like spilling her coffee, or breaking a shoe lace, she breaks. She refuses to talk about whats bothering her, and becomes moody. It's obvious that this happens a lot, and he continues to put up with i t all becuase he loves her.
