Lyrics for Floyd The Barber as interpreted by justinjtp

Floyd The Barber Lyrics
Bell on the door ring, come on in (Alt: Hello Cobain - come on in)
Floyd observes my hairy chin
Sit down in [the] chair, don't be afraid
Steaming towel wrapped around my face

I'm ashamed (x3)

Barney ties me to the chair
I can't see, I'm really scared
Floyd breathes hard, I hear a zip
Pee-Pee pressed against my lips (Alt: Beat me, pressed against my lips)

I was shamed (x3)

I sense others in the room
Opie, Aunt Bea, I presume
They take turns, and cut me up (Alt: They take turns to cut me up)
I die smothered in Andy's Clutch (Alt: I died smothered in Aunt Bea's muff)

I was shamed (x3)

surely kurt wanted to describe an idea about a small town going bad (aaalex1) and used the example from the andy griffith show (butterfly babe) to describe it in a way that people would understand, from what i gather it's also something to do with a fear of being cut with knives??

I think this song is about sexual abuse, and how in children/teens they are afraid to report that such a thing has happened, and how the family is afraid to report it since they don't want to bring discrage upon their family. I got that from the line "I was ashamed", also I think the song means like what AAALEX1 says how a town or people you love go insane.

I don't know thats just my opinion

This song is about how a seemingly perfect town has it's dark secrets(acording to "Come as You Are") just like Arberdeen, Kurt's hometown.

The first thousand times i heard this song, i thought it had a sexual meaning, rape or something. Then after reading the lyrics and hearing the song another ten thousand times, i made a new decision.

It is about a small town "going bad", and the boy who goes to get his haircut gets raped and killed buy everyone in the room. He names the people after characters from the andy griffith show.

Note: Kurt was believed to watch the Andy Griffith show right before he took his life. Interesting.

In this song, the "homely fantasy" of Mayberry (Opposite of Aberdeen) is turned into a night mare. Kurt could have also drawn from a comic strip parody of the Andy Griffith show by Drew and John Friedman. It is a remix of a Dale Crover demo that was done with Cobain and Novoselic.

The words to the chorus are "I was shaved". I mean the second line is "Floyd observes my hairy chin" the song is full of refrences to being in a barber shop. Not that that's what it's about. This one has me stumped.

egb's got a point. it could be shaved instead of shamed. after all it is about a barber. but kurt cobain's mind worked in very strange ways. it could be about sexual abuse but its more likely that the lyrics were missheard. or that this song has no intended meaning.

Actually the line goes "I was shamed / I was shaved / I was shamed" so you're both right. Actually I may have that a little backwards. It might be shaved/shamed/shaved.

Anyway, you're pretty much right. . one of his punkier ideas, a small town gone bad, references to the ANdy Griffith show, which he thought was hte most hyprocritical, absurd show ever, especially when he compared it to his hometown of Aberdeen. THus the bizarre nightmarish mix of a character being raped and slaughtered by the cast of the Andy Griffith show.

This song draws you in. It goes from a normal visit to the barber shop to, well...a little more than that. It definitely reflects the horrifying secrets behind a small town (eg- Andy, Aberdeen, etc). Fucking amazing song. Also, if you read the Journals, its actually, "Bell on door clanks, come on in" and I died smothered in Aunt Bea's butt"...whether he altered them during different performances, this is what he originally wrote in his Journals.
