I'm only happy when it rains
I'm only happy when it's complicated
And though I know you can't appreciate it
I'm only happy when it rains

You know I love it when the news is bad
Why it feels so good to feel so sad?
I'm only happy when it rains

Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down on me
Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down on me

I'm only happy when it rains
I feel good when things are goin' wrong
I only listen to sad, sad songs
I'm only happy when it rains

I only smile in the dark
My only comfort is the night gone black
I didn't accidentally tell you that
I'm only happy when it rains
You'll get the message by the time I'm through
When I complain about me and you
I'm only happy when it rains

Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down on me
Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down on me
Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down
Pour your misery down on me

You can keep me company
As long as you don't care

I'm only happy when it rains
You want to hear about my new obsession?
I'm riding high upon a deep depression
I'm only happy when it rains

Pour some misery down on me
I'm only happy when it rains
Pour some misery down on me
I'm only happy when it rains
Pour some misery down on me
I'm only happy when it rains
Pour some misery down on me

[Repeat: x2]
I'm only happy when it rains
Pour some misery down on me
Pour some misery down on me
Pour some misery down on me
Pour some misery down on me

My Interpretation:Man, story of my life. No one seems to understand it though. Happy is great, but for some reason, there's this sick little satisfaction with fucking my life up. It's INTERESTING. I can't take just constant happiness. I need darkness. Never do I feel so right when people think I'm crazy, when everything is going wrong. I've never really fit anywhere else. I'm a conditional masochist I guess.

But when you've struggled with depression for that long and things are finally going right, then you feel completely out of place. Depression is nice and comfortable and happiness is wrong. It's like the complete opposite of the typical problem people have, feeling like it's wrong to be negative. To me, it's wrong to be fully positive.

General Comment:In my humble opinion, of course, the song's about the good things you find in bad things. It's about letting you know that being sad is also enjoyable. She's only happy when it rains, when every single thing goes complicated and also likes to hear to sad, sad songs... She finds on sadness a happy mood.

    :') ironic and PERFECT.

I think the song invites you to don't feel that bad when you're already screwed up at all.

General Comment:I'm not going to say anything about this song's meaning. It's pretty self-explanatory: "I'm depressed, but depression is my friend, so I kind of like it."

All I'll say is this was the first Garbage song I ever heard. I was watching MTV (ugh, can't believe I watched that blasted channel as a teen!) and this song came on and my only thought was "OMG this woman is reading my mind! That's exactly how I feel!" At that moment Shirley Manson became my idol. She and I were the same. Yes folks, the first Garbage song I've ever heard and I've been hooked since! Garbage rules!

General Comment:I think this song is about wallowing in your own misery is actually a good way to make yourself feel better. It's slightly masochistic

General Comment:I assume it's about her [or someone else?] being a pessimist,
which I can completely relate to. Right on.

    Or, what mallachin said.
    I agree.

General Comment:Even though this song seems to be projected to those who are never happy when things are going well in their life, I like to listen to it differently. When she sings the lyrics, I don't hear sadness at all. I actually hear sarcasm. When I sing along, I have fun with it. It's more tongue in cheek to me. It pumps me up and makes me dance around.

General Comment:To me, the message of this song is "I'm depressed, so what? Leave me be." Sadness is addictive, as Gustav Flaubert said.
