Lyrics for Understanding In A Car Crash as interpreted by mudfly

Understanding In A Car Crash Lyrics
Splintered piece of glass falls in the seat, gets caught
Broken windows, open locks, reminders of the youth we lost
In trying so hard to look away from you
We followed white lines to the sunset
Crash my car everday the same way

Time to let this pass
(The time it takes, the time it takes to let go)
Time runs through our veins
(Starts and stops and starts and stops again)
We dont stand a chance in this threadbare time
(The time it takes, the time it takes to let go)
Time to let this pass
(The time it takes, the time it takes to let go)

Staring at the setting sun
No reason to come back again
The twilight world in blue and white
The needle and the damage done

I dont want to feel this way forever
A dead letter marked, return to sender

Broken watch you gave to me turns into a compass
Its two hands still point to the same time 12:03, our last goodbye

So push the seats back a little further
I can see the headlights coming
So push the seats back a little further
Roll the windows down and take a breath
I can see the headlights coming
They paint the world in red and broken glass

Time to let this pass
(The time it takes, the time it takes to let go)
Time runs through our veins
(Starts and stops and starts and stops again)
We dont stand a chance in this threadbare time
(The time it takes, the time it takes to let go)
Time to let this pass
(The time it takes, the time it takes to let go)

Staring at the setting sun
No reason to come back again
The twilight world in blue and white
The needle and the damage done

I dont want to feel this way forever
A red letter marked, return to sender

Spinning hubcaps set the tempo for the music of the broken window
Cameras on and the cameras click
We open up the lens and cant stop

Staring at the setting sun
No reason to come back again
The twilight world in blue and white
The needle and the damage done

I dont want to feel this way forever
The lights are on, and the cameras click
We open up the lens
(The broken glass)
Staring at the setting sun
(And its over)
No reason to come back again
(In a flash)
The twilight world in blue and white
(Understanding)
The needle and the damage done
(Ill never understand)
I dont want to feel this way forever
(Understanding, in a car crash)
A red letter marked, return to sender
(In a car crash)
In a crash (In a crash)

Woah this song is amazing. I'm so glad I finally got to read the lyrics. It's amazing the pictures they have painted with their words. You have to wonder what the car crash is a metaphor for. He mentions needles and flowing though our veins. Could the daily car crash be drugs?

the song is about him and his significant other parting ways and him feeling like he's been in a car crash...not him wanting to crash his car. the needles and veins refer to his feeling numb about losing the girl.

This song is about his girlfriend dying in a car crash. He is trying to move on with his life, but he can't let it go. He tries to move away from where it happened, but it dosen't help. "He dosent want to feel this way forever."

when i went to a thursday show, geoff dedicated this song to anyone who's ever lost someone to a car crash. he said he wrote it for his close friend whom he lost to an accident. you're all wrong, fools.

Ok..... and what you heard in a show makes you smarter than us? That else other people had the thinking to post their interpartion of the song... Which we all should do... Songs take on so many meanings who gives a damn about the orgin of the lyrics.

Everyone interprits a son differently. This song is really beautiful. To me this song is about accepting the death of a loved one. One of the main conflicts is dealing with denial.
"In trying so hard to look away from you
we followed white lines to the sunset
I crash my car everyday the same way "
In trying to deny something you often find yourself wrecking your brain over it.
The broken watch resembles the narrators troubles with letting it go. It turns into a compass, leading him further into memories of the last goodbye.
Theres so much great poetry in this song.

What this song means to me is the this guy lost his life partner and how "he crashes his car everday in the same way" is a metaphor for how his daily life is affected by his loss and as he's trying to move on, he can't because the "dead letter marked return to sender" is sign sayin that shes up there waiting for him

crashing the car is also reliving the pain, like when you dwell on something, and you can almost feel that he has the same pain in his accident with life as his partner had with the car accident. This song is amazing, as is the rest of Thursday's music. All I have to say is the way I liev my life reflects how music has helped me.

i liked this song the first time i heard it then i sat down and listened to it and wrote down the lyrics and its now my favorite song
i think it talks about an addiction to drugs about following the white lines and the needle and the damage done
and crashing the car is bein high

the dead letter marked return to sender is someone dead and return to sender means there goin back to where the came from

i dont want to feel this way forever
a dead letter marked return to sender
means he doesnt want to be doin drugs forever and how he doesnt wanna die from it

staring at the setting sun
no reason to come back again is when there gonna do it and they have no reason to stop
and the twilight world in blue and white is bein high

this is song is amazing thats all i can say

i think this song simply means how much we are not in control in our lives.
One second you could be have all the fun in the world thinking your in control, then the next thing you know your world gets rocked, like a car crash.
peace everyone!

When I listen to this song, I imagine what type of understanding you suddenly have when you are sitting in a car, and you realize that it is about to crash and there is nothing you can do about it. Thats obviously the most intense kind of situation, but more generally its about accepting the inevitablity of pain in life. There are some times you know your life is about to get really fucked up and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it but accept it and move on. Thats what the understanding in a car crash is.

Ok, so... I've read everyone's own personal meanings and I also feel that the song is a bit of a drug abuse song and a broken relationship song all in one. If it wasn't about drugs, then why the hell would he waste his time adding "white lines" and "needle and the damage done" and also, if you think about it, he "crashes his car the same way everyday" kinda like a daily drug addiction. So hate me if you want to, but that's what I think. And anyway, whatever it's about it still is super deep, a song to remember, and definately not written by some stupid fool who doesn't know what the f--- he's doin'.
