I like to party fucking hard. I like my rock and roll the same. Don't give a fuck if I burn out. Don't give a fuck if I fade away. So back to the Motor-League with me before I'm forced to face the wrath of a well-heeled buying public who live vicariously through tortured-artist college-rock and floor-punching macho pabulum. Back to the Motor League I go. Once thought I drew a lucky hand. Turned out to be a live grenade of play-acting "anarchists" and Mommy's-little-skinheads, death-threats and sycophants and wieners drunk on straight-edge. Fuck off. Who cares? I'd rather hi-lite Trip-Tiks than listen to your bullshit. Fuck off. Who cares about your stupid scenes, your shitty zines, the straw-men you build up to burn. It never ceases to amaze me and as I'm suffering your perfection it reminds me of my own race to redress my own sad history of mouthed feet. Eaten hats. Teated bulls. Amish phone-books. Drunken brawls. But what have we here? 15 years later it still reeks of ‘Swill and Chickenshit Conformists with their fists in the air; like-father, like-son "rebels” bloated on korn, eminems and bizkits. Lord, hear our prayer: take back your Amy Grant mosh-crews and your fair-weather politics. Blow-dry my hair and stick me on a ten-speed. Back to the Motor League. I guess life is just a popularity contest. Success, the ability to perform within a framework of obedience. Just ask the candy-coated Joy-Cam rock-bands selling shoes for venture-capitalists, silencing competing messages, rounding off the jagged edges. Today is good day to die.

General Comment:> "the straw-men you build up to burn"-Burning Man

i believe this is talking about the 'straw man' logical fallacy committed by (but not limited to) musicians trying to make a point.

"substituting a superficially similar yet weaker proposition (the "straw man"(most likely a government or social issue)), and refuting it, without ever having actually refuted the original position."

sounds indicative of the politically motivated musical industry to me.

General Comment:Im disappointed that everyone seems to be thinkly so small. They're not just angry at the punk scene, or the music scene, It's much more than that. They're angry at our entire generation. They hoped that we would do more than our parents before us, that we would take it beyond the festivals, which really are nothing more than an excuse to party and have someone else's agenda shoved in your face("I like to party fucking hard. I like my rock and roll the same. Don't give a fuck if I burn out."),("the straw-men you build up to burn"-Burning Man,"rock-bands selling shoes for venture-capitalists- Van's Warped Tour). They had the desire to rebel, the anger at the system, but it wasn't real, they just like the way MTV packaged and sold the scene, when it came time to "spit on their hands, hoist the black flag, and start slitting throats", (H.L. Mencken)they didn't have it in them.("like-father, like-son "rebels bloated on korn, eminems and bizkits") They liked they idea of political dissent, and fighting against the machine that imprisons them until it actually took effort and risks.("take back your Amy Grant mosh-crews and your fair-weather politics") They listen to the 'rebellious' music and feel like they're actually doing something to change things, like they're somehow fighting the system without leaving their nice suburban home and their bright little offices.("a buying public who live vicariously through tortured-artist college-rock and floor-punching macho pabulum.") So here we are years later and the scene has become nothing more than kids wearing the 'punk uniform' with their colored hair, piercings, patches, pins, Hot Topic gear, all ironically in a desire to be "different" and go against what the general public thinks they should be when they actually just look like carbon-copies of their friends, with no real drive to change things, they just throw their fists up at the shows and sing along with lyrics they don't actually understand or believe in enough to fight for ("it still reeks of Swill and Chickenshit Conformists with their fists in the air")

General Comment:retards...this song is about not caring what you think about it or what you think the band...regardless of what is going in your completely totally 'rad' scene. give up the BS. Music is music. If they don't sell records or make money, they don't give a shit. How it should be. Grow up. remember the world doesn't revolve around you.

General Comment:Thanks for the info about Tip-tiks! I thought it had something to do with the Motor Leagues, but how the fuck was I supposed to know what Chris was talking about?

My take on "Today is a good day to die:" Chris often ends lyrics (in the liner notes) or interview questions with funny or depressing non-sequitors like this. I think it comes out of writing words that make you more and more depressed about the world or yourself and suddenly you just think: kill me. It's kind of black humor, not necessarily serious. I think this is an instance of that. Read some of their written response interviews or the liner notes to their old records on Recess Records (I still have mine somewhere) to see other examples.

A trajectory?: Anti manifesto -> Less Talk, More Rock -> Motor Leagues -> Rock for Sustainable Capitalism

General Comment:"Blow-dry my hair" - does John K. of the Weakerthans (formerly the bassist of Propagandhi) sing that line? If so, that's hilarious.

I'm kind of sad John & company left G7... Why, John? Why?

General Comment:Thank you Tony for finally saying this .. most people are focused on the three bands Chris mentions in the song but if you read the lyrics you get a sense that he is speaking of a much larger, more widespread problem in the entire music industry. I know so many people that become vegan or what-not simply because their favorite bands are doing it .. Hating Bush because NoFX tells them to .. Buying Vans because that punk band on MTV is wearing them .. Going to Warped Tour because it is a punk show so it must be subversive right?
Propagandhi are of the few and fleeting breaths left of "punk"
It started as an ideal and that is what it should remain .. Ignorance is not punk .. If you are going to believe in something how about doing it due to the research you have done first hand and not because your favorite fucking band said to do right after pimping their latest "emo-t-shirt" or "anti-corporate" company .. These 'subversive companies' are often tiomes just as much to blame as the Nike's of the world. Propagandhi is about educating the people .. as they say "Knowledge is power" .. they are not out searching for people to jump on their bandwagon but at rather conveying their raw emotion in reference to some bloated social problems with the world .. If you notice they never tell you how to think in their songs .. some people may be proponents of liking propagandhi because they are 'anti-everything man!!' but in actuality they are hoping to educate by influence .. listening to their cd is not a lesson .. it is a catalyst .. go out and read a book .. turn off your CNN and actually find out what is going on in the world .. Remain vigilant in the face of discension .. Never claim you know the answers but be proud for keeping your eyes fucking open.
