Lyrics for #36 as interpreted by antifox64

#36 Lyrics
Yeah, yeah I scream...
With you on my mind so heavy and so hard
I don't know quite everything
You make me think of a better thing...
Better things to fill my day with
But they don't mean to go
Please don't be too bad with me, God
Please don't be too good...
Let some women's light, women's light
Chain my hands with me singing...

Hani Hani, come and dance for me
Whoa, whoa, sooner there
Hani Hani, come and dance for me
Only the brave
Hani Hani, come and dance for me
(feeling the night)
Hani Hani, come and dance for me
Lead me back home to life

You made Heaven turn to dirt
And dirt turn to dance on
Heaven come my way
Baby surely do
Maybe some moonlight
Maybe some, baby surely do
Maybe some moonlight
Say this say this...

Hani Hani, come and dance for me
Underneath the moonlight
Hani Hani come and dance for me

Hani Hani, come and dance for me
Come on, come on go
Hani Hani, come and dance for me
Give it back, give it back....

Oh man, I can't talk
A man was tall and once tore a piece of freedom for us all
When, then, you least expect it
Man can cut from of his own heart
For us all, that man
Don't believe it, oh yeah....
God, two men slice and dice each other up in his place
They don't believe it...
Well leave it
Leave it lying, leave it lying, leave it lying
Got me singing
Hani Hani, come and dance for me

somebody wrote the lyrics wrong, it is "Honey" not Hani. Im impressed that somebody knew enough to know who Hani was though. Chris Hani was Dave's friend in South Africa who was assasinated by being shot in the head. "A man was tall and once tore a piece of freedom for us all" is directed towards Hani, as he was a civil leader dedicated towards a new government in South Africa. Dave wrote this song originally with "Hani, Hani, come and dance with me", but then changed it, feeling that this song was too uplifting and happy to be about his friends death.

Was Chris Hani direct friends with Dave? I knew the song was aobut the assassinated anti-apartheid leader, but I never knew that Dave and Chris were good friends. Maybe I just missed out on somehting. Too bad Glen Ballard had to come along and ruin this song by turning it into "Everyday." IT had so much potential as it was. I will always accept this as the "real" Everyday, not that junk Ballard produced.

Actually, the orginal lyrics was indeed Hani hani, followed by some scats. Dave eventually found the song too disturbing for such an upbeat melody and changed hani hani to honey honey.

I never knew about the "hani" lyric. I always thought it was "honey". I like "honey" better, it just seems more fitting.

yay!!! this is my favorite DMB song of all time! But don't take the lyrics to litterally because Dave changes them every time he plays the song live.

great tune, this is. I've got a version of it from back in the day (back when they actually had to say "wer'e the dave matthews band...") And as dave's introing the song he says
this song is a song we all wrote together one time, doin' a sound check in Vergina, and Chris Hani from South Africa, he'd just got assassinated that day. So we came up with this really happy kinda groove. It's called # 36 Then later: To celibrate his life, the life he had lived...
It's straight from Dave's mouth so i'll trust this one (:

I really do love this song. Thanks for telling me what this was all about because I was clueless to that. But I would love to know why everyone hated 'Everyday' so much? I mean, I've been a Dave Matthews Band fan for a very long time, but I definately still liked alot of the work off of the album. So Right, Fool to Think, Mother Father, Angel.. they all had great lyrics and the music might not have been the original dMb type, but it still was great. I guess its just everyones opinion, though.

I find this song to be one that is fun to sing too. Thats why i like it so much. I love driving in my car, putting in a DMB cd and singing at the top of my lungs ;)
And i would also like to add that i agree with SheaTay. I like Everyday. I love how in live at Folsom Field Boulder Colorado they sing everyday and #36 together. It sounds awesome

The Listener Supported Version is my favorite - I love that they slow it down a lot more than on Red Rocks. The meaning of that version comes through in the lyrics "Never want to see you blue / never want to see you in the corner by yourself" and he asks her to dance with him. It's just a really sexy, happy truly danceable song - and sure you can sway back and forth to most of their stuff ... but you can really get down to # 36.

Also, when I heard Everyday w/ the #36 interpolation on Live at Folsom Field, my mouth dropped open. It was INCREDIBLE, I nearly passed out. I was sitting there at my desk like, whoa! It was so perfect. Now, Everyday isn't my favorite song, but #36 improved it immensely. The only thing I hope is that they don't always play #36 live like that ... it will be nice to hear it on it's own every once in a while.

I was listening to an interview and dave was talkin about this song, he said he wrote it during a sound track because someone in south africa had been shot. im guessing hani from reading the other peoples stuff. but i do like honey better, probably just because its what im used to hearing. I love this song so much its really awesome

Okay, i checked out the interview again, and he said that they wrote it during a soundtrack and a dictator (hani)of south africa died, so they wrote a happy upbeat song. so him and hani we not friends.
"Oh man, I can't talk
A man was tall and once tore a piece of freedom for us all"

the version of "Everyday" on "The Gorge" is amazing cause the crowd sings the chorus to this song like at the beginning and in the end and dave throws a little in too. it's amazing. blah. whoo.

Chris Hani was no dictator. He was a freedom fighter.

From wikipedia:Chris Hani, born Martin Thembisile Hani (June 28, 1942 – April 10, 1993) was the leader of the South African Communist Party and Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC).

He was a fierce opponent of white apartheid rule and was sometimes perceived as a populist rival to the leaders of the ANC. He was voted 20th in the controversial Top 100 Greatest South Africans poll.

He was assasinated on 10 April 1993 outside his Dawn Park, Boksburg home. Two white extremists, Clive Derby-Lewis and Janusz Walus were convicted of his murder.

In 1997, Baragwanath Hospital -one of the largest hospitals in the world- was renamed the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in memory of Hani.

Dave Matthews dedicated the song "#36" to him.

i love the live version of this song on "the gorge" when it's mixed in with "everyday" seeing as how they both share the same guitar. dave is playing guitar for everyday and the intro is long and the whole crowd is singing the chorus to this song at the beginning and then again in closing. dave joins in in the end. the entire thing gives me chills and also makes me appreciate "Everyday" more.

I have never heard Dave (live) in a concert I attended sing #36 on its own...it has always been joined with Everyday. I LOVE the way it sounds live though...and I get a kick out of the audience. EVERY SINGLE TIME I have heard Dave live and he has done Everday, the audience sings #36 in the background...it's amazing to hear, and be a part of. Whoever was first on here about the lyrics and the meaning, you all are right...it originally was Hani Hani, but he felt the song was too upbeat for the topic, so when he sings it, it has turned into the Honey Honey version (and he threw in that never want to see you in the corner by yourself) and of course adds other lines while live, as he does with most songs... :) Dave is so awesome to hear live, and those that don't like Everyday--if you haven't heard it live, trust me...you haven't heard it!

#36 evolved into Everyday, as a lot of DMB songs do. They evolve. #36 = Everyday

One of my favorite songs to hear the boys play live is this as the intro to Everyday...Its just so fun because its all the crowd...If there was one thing I had to do for the rest of my life, 'everyday' it would be go to a Dave concert.

Leave it to Ballard to fuck things up.

You're a pop producer...you Morrisette work was fine - but know your place.
