Lyrics for Grace Is Gone as interpreted by antifox64

Grace Is Gone Lyrics
Neon shines through smoky eyes tonight,
It's 2 AM, I'm drunk again,
It's heavy on my mind, it's heavy on my mind.

I could never love again,
So much as I love you.
Where you end, where I begin,
Is like a river going through.

Take my heart, take my eyes,
Cause I'll need them no more.
If never again they'll fall upon,
The one I so adore.

Excuse me please, one more drink.
Could you make it strong,
Cause I don't need to think.
She broke my heart,
My grace is gone.
Another drink and I'll move on.

One drink to remember,
And another to forget.
How could I ever dream to find a love like this again?
One drink to remember, another to forget...

Excuse me please, one more drink.
Would you make it strong,
Cause I don't need to think.
She broke my heart,
My grace is gone.
Another drink and I'll move on.
One more drink and I'll move on.

You think of things impossible,
Then the sun refuse to shine.
I woke with you beside me,
Your cold hand lay in mine.

Excuse me please, one more drink.
Could you make it strong,
Cause I don't need to think.
She broke my heart,
My grace is gone.
Another drink and I'll go...

Excuse me please, one more drink.
Could you make it strong,
Cause I don't need to think.
She broke my heart, my grace is gone.
Another drink and I'll move on,
One more drink and I'll move on.
One more drink my grace is gone.

i think that its about a "dead" love, and when i say dead i mean their love was no longer there for eachother, but he loves that person so much he can't get rid of the memories, but he also loved them so much it hurt so he HAS to get rid of the memories or he'll never be able to go on living,
"one drink to remember then another to forget"
so well, yeah you know, i think the part about "your cold hand lay in mine" means that theres no life in their relationship, the spark is gone.

dave is comparing a physical bartender and drink; with God and his spiritual drink. dave is learing the difference between good and evil. he takes one human carnal drink..take one spiritual drink of truth. when we are given the carnal drink..its like God steps back and allows us to experience the evil. we feel alone. yet at the appointed time God revisits us to refresh us once again. this continues until we are physically dead and thus ends this repetative process of learning good and evil.

grace is another word for "el shaddie". "the female name for God" its like when dave is experiencing this physical drink. God seperates the relationship

she broke my heart...does dave seperate himself from God or does God seperate "herself" from dave?

it is God who wills dave to drink. dave can say "she" broke my heart and drove him to drink. as it is God who wills Dave to stop drinking.

Someone said Dave was a widower, that is NOT TRUE! When I first heard this song, I definitely pictured Grace as dead. I think it's about a dead loved one.

You guys are tards, but get and A for effort. I have a recording of this song where Dave says this song is about his step father who died. He found it hard to write about "the sweetest step father ever", so he did the "eve thing", meaning he turned it into a female. I thought this site was about actual song meanings, not personal opinions.

alright im gonna clear this whole dave/religion thing to everyone. First, his first cd was remember two things, and christmas song was one of the first songs he wrote. at this time, yes, dave was a christian, enough so to write a song about it, really. next as most of you know, dave's sister died, she was killed by her husband who then killed himself. it is said that after this point dave lost his belief in god, soon after this album he recorded lillywhite sessions, which is the busted stuff original, lilywhite was recorded before everyday, but it was essentially released afterwards, this is why busted stuff is considered one of the darker albums, he wrote did it during all of his suffering, this cd also had grace is gone, i think that grace is gone is about him losing his sister and losing his faith. people have said that dave's sister anne, was sometimes referred to by him as grace, and when dave describes his religion he uses the use grace to describe religon itself, or the greater being in religion, like a god. really a sad song actually. this is my interpretation, but i have put a lot of research into this cd, and what dave was thinking about at the time. so anyway this song kind of seals him losing his faith, he has also told people that his now agnostic. summary, dave was a christian, but then became agnostic after losing his sister.

in my last post i also forgot to mention that dave also had a girlfriend named julia grey, he asked her to marry him a bunch of times and she kept saying no, if im not wrong i think that his sister passed away and he gave up on juia grey around the same time. dave was pretty depressed around that time, hence why lilywhite is like this, also remember his drug of choice around this time was alcohol.

Guys, I listened to this song the day i broke up w/ my girlfriend. This was one of the songs that almost brought me to tears. I had to turn it off it was so touching. but just take a second and look at these lyrics
"Take my heart, take my eyes,
Cause I'll need them no more.
If never again they'll fall upon,
The one I so adore."
That is poetry

elegance and beauty of movement or expression
seemliness: a sense of propriety and consideration for others
a disposition to kindness and compassion;

When he says grace, I don't think of a woman. I think of his grace. His kindness and compassion. Not his loss of it, but the fact that he can't do it anymore for a certain person. You know? I see a man who has lost his lover, and she's gone and he's drinking the pain away. Like, his heart was broken by this lover of his, and now all his grace, like state of mind is gone.

And on this part:
Take my heart, take my eyes,
Cause I'll need them no more.
If never again they'll fall upon,
The one I so adore.

He's saying take his eyes and heart, because they won't fall on the one that he loves so much, either she has moved on, or she's dead.

I think I contradicted myself...but oh well.

His songs have so much meaning. I haven't read all of the meanings, but everyone kind of argues and its kind of unnecessary because his songs can be interpretated in so many ways and EVERYONE has a different opinion and it can mean different things to other people due to past experiences. It's just...not right imo to argue to find one true meaning of a song. my two cents. :)

I agree with it being about Dave's step-father, that's definitely a possibility because i'm pretty sure that this song was written during his 'lillywhite sessions' where dave was drinking pretty heavily. althought the screw you song about the girlfriend that said no to him three times is Halloween, this is simply a mixture of alcohol, his sisters murder and possibly step-fathers song. great song

no one can write about God unless God allows us to see.. this is daves gift, yet he writes in code. using bible symbol as well as daves own use of everyday words..

the two drinks are about the fall of adam.

he's in heaven joined to his girl...the two were one.
(spirits)

God seperates "wisdom" from adam.
He then places adam in eden and gives adam another woman..one seperated from him spiritually and physically ...eve.
wisdom is the holy spirit. also called "grace".
grace is gone.

adam fell from heaven to eden. the first "drink".

adam bit the apple. the second "drink". he fell off Gods mountain outside eden. outside the burning sword.

by the way the burning sword is daves favorite icon..

the burning sword is the seperating firmament between God and man. to get back to God. man must go through the burning sword back to eden.

hence the fire dancer

think of it this way..religion dont sell... Jazz does.

daytime dave thinks and writes about God and man with good clarity in what he's allowed to see.

nightime dave is the rock and roller.

"grace" is really not gone in daves life. with grace's help, dave can write his songs.

remember two things..

God loves you and God is in control, dont worry.

dave is not going to write about lifes problems.

he writes to honor his God. someday you'll see this and Go "Wow, this is so cool".

the same story of the fall is about "jacobs ladder". adams in heaven. first drink knocks him down 7 rungs.
second drink knocks him down 5 rungs and off the ladder. (in spiritual death) like I said you see it. or not. (its all in the bible) and you can talk about it. dave does in his songs in his code..

this isnt dave coming up with this strange stories. its God talking through dave. dave is just the messenger.
remember dave always talks about dreaming.

My dad is always asking me this question... Is Dave talking about a girl named Grace or is he talking about his grace as in his ambition or his passion for doing something?

Iam thinking it is a girl but i may be wrong_ what do you think?

id havta agree that this song is about heart break...
The cold hand doesnt mean actual death but seems to be implied metaphorically by saying that she didnt have the same feelings.

Great song to hear live... packs a powerful meaning

For spanky98c -
Your research is very well done. But just to clarify for you and everyone out there. Being Agnostic is not the same as being Atheist. Atheists do not believe in God - at all; Agnostics on the other hand feel that the existence of a God, or Gods, is unknown - or impossible to know or prove - but they do have a spiritual element to their consciousness. Many feel this is a form of skepticism, but I feel Dave is just a normal human being who is obviously very enlightened.

This song must in fact be about his formal faith ending and his unknowable (Agnostic) phase beginning. ("Where you end, where I begin,
Is like a river going through")

Spanky, you are likely correct that this realization came to Dave after the tragedy involving his sister Anne; although Grace is Gone was released in 2002 and Anne died in 1994 - but Dave is obviously curious about death and in essence, how one lives their life is what really matters ("I can't belive that we would lie in our graves, wondering, waiting, worrying").

The man is a genius...

As lolita02569 said, it's about a loss, but I think it may be talking about inspiration, his own grace. It fits also....maybe he was feeling blue because of a girl, but i think the song is about losing more than just her, it's about a much more inner loss...I like it more that way :)

well....this song honestly. depresses me more than any other song. i think this song is about a love lost, but futher down the road, i think this love will be found again. the same girl. recently me && my boy broke up. && he told me about this song one night && i do know about it. i love dave matthews band. ive seen him in concert and it was one of the best experiences of my life. anyways...he told me a day after we broke up him and some of his buddies went out and his buddie was driving and put this song on. he said i cant listen to his man. he told me he was bout to cry. anyways...i realized this song makes you think that i have true love, but i want to understand that it's real. i don't like being without him/her.

At a 2007 show in Manchester, England, Matthews said the song was about his stepfather, but that he made him "about 30 years younger and a girl."

In the acoustic version, Dave actually says that it's about his step-dad but didn't want to make it awkward with the "he and him" stuff. He changed it to a girl because of that.

Dave doesn't want his music to be understood so easily, what it says in the lyrics and why he wrote it are two completely different things most of the time. His perplexity is what fascinates me.
