Lyrics for Grace Is Gone as interpreted by antifox64

Grace Is Gone Lyrics
Neon shines through smoky eyes tonight,
It's 2 AM, I'm drunk again,
It's heavy on my mind, it's heavy on my mind.

I could never love again,
So much as I love you.
Where you end, where I begin,
Is like a river going through.

Take my heart, take my eyes,
Cause I'll need them no more.
If never again they'll fall upon,
The one I so adore.

Excuse me please, one more drink.
Could you make it strong,
Cause I don't need to think.
She broke my heart,
My grace is gone.
Another drink and I'll move on.

One drink to remember,
And another to forget.
How could I ever dream to find a love like this again?
One drink to remember, another to forget...

Excuse me please, one more drink.
Would you make it strong,
Cause I don't need to think.
She broke my heart,
My grace is gone.
Another drink and I'll move on.
One more drink and I'll move on.

You think of things impossible,
Then the sun refuse to shine.
I woke with you beside me,
Your cold hand lay in mine.

Excuse me please, one more drink.
Could you make it strong,
Cause I don't need to think.
She broke my heart,
My grace is gone.
Another drink and I'll go...

Excuse me please, one more drink.
Could you make it strong,
Cause I don't need to think.
She broke my heart, my grace is gone.
Another drink and I'll move on,
One more drink and I'll move on.
One more drink my grace is gone.

Dave is married to a woman named Ashley. They got married after an 8 year long relationship. They have fraternal twins...Grace is one of them (alive and well).
The girlfriend that he asked to marry him three times is Julia Grey...not grace.

Grace by one definition is Divine (God) love and protection bestowed freely on people.
The state of being protected or sanctified by the favor of God.

We all know that Dave questions the existence of Gods and things of that nature.

Maybe he is referring to grace as "she" and "her" cold hand...being the hand of grace.

I don't know....that's my take on this song. It makes sense that since this song is about his stepfather's death, that he wouldn't be referring to a female literally.

i think, like a few of you have said, his wife or love has died, and now thinking back on it, hes drinking to make the sadness go away. this is definitely one of their easier songs to understand.

No matter what the song really means (death or just leaving) we all can agree its about losing love. Thats a horrible thing to go through and its great how he expressed it through this song. I heard Dave live once and wow can he sing he gets so emotional in his music and never have i seen someone so into singing before its like all he cares about is the music not the money or fame. Thats just cool.

His vision is clouded; good judgment can’t be made. Drunk again—a recurring nightmare Thoughts weigh down his normal every day function. Notice, “I could never love again so much as I love you” Love is still in present tense, so he still has feelings. “where you end” could be a reference to death, the end of life, but most likely not. “where I begin” refers to where he should start to recover—to get over this lost love. The “take my eyes, take my heart” is a plea to a greater being (God) to relieve his anguish. Also perhaps an allusion to Oedipus Rex when in the end, Oedipus gouges his own eyes out. A long shot, but possible. Now, the kicker—if his love is still alive, why wouldn’t his eyes be able to see her? So this must be a clue that it is a love lost in death “If never again they’ll fall upon, the one I so adore.” “One more drink” translates to one last time to be with his love. He is thinking that its his fault she has died, so that’s why “I don’t need to think she broke my heart.” Because he is trying to realize that it isn’t his fault, and she didn’t mean to break his heart. My “grace is gone” his love, his second half has gone, just one last visit (another drink) and he’ll begin to move along. Each time he thinks of her (a drink to remember) he has to take a drink (literally and metaphorically) to get over her. “How could I dream…love like you again” is describing his difficulty in realizing that his love is gone, and he wishes it were as easy as dreaming to find new love. Once again, repetition like “heavy on my mind”, “one drink…another to forget…” shows how tied up he is with this issue. That is the only thing he sleeps, eats, drinks and lives. “you think of things impossible” is the second time he references a second person. The first time he pleads to God to “take my eyes…” and this time he knows that she “thought of things impossible.” Its not that she doesn’t love him anymore, but thought is used to convey the term “done.” You have done something impossible. You have passed away. “The sun refuse to shine” means that it is a dark day---mourning takes over. “I woke” and realized that you’re no longer there, but you’re beside me, spiritually. Finally in the end, the “I’ll move on” is replaced by “my grace is gone.” He has finally awakened from this half mourning self pity-half sleep and realized that his love (physically) is truly gone, but emotionally his love is still with him.

this is my favorite DMB song. -- tornpage

This song was written about his sister, Grace, who was murdered. His daughter is named after her.

ants41 is right but one of daves daughters is named grace, does anyone know if that has anything to do with the song. however, his daughter is named grace-anne, so technically she was named after daves dead sister.

You only find true love once, you either spend the rest of your life with that person or looking for somone to replace them so Take my heart, take my eyes, Cause I'll need them no more.
If never again they'll fall upon,
The one I so adore.

Wow. Where do ya'll get these facts? Is there some sort of secret Dave page that I don't know about? =\

I've always liked the line, "You think of things so impossible, then the sun refused to shine." -- To me, this means that you think things are going to change in your favor, but the sun never rose, as in, that day never came.

this song holds an elegant double meaning. dave, as many people know, is a widower and i believe his wife's name was grace. the obvious statement 'my grace is gone' shows that his wife has died and left him behind. but within that the simple meanign fo the word grace; his balance and grasp of reality, has left him simuletaneously. this song is tragic and gets deep into the listener because it is most everyone's wrost fear : that the lvoe fo their life will leave them behind here.
the line 'one drink to remember one drink to forget'
is often repeated and i think this adds to his rememberance and also to teh fact that, as he drinks more, he seems to forget less--the drinking is increasing his depression instead of numbing it as he thought it would.
once again, dave has amazed me with his talent.

I dont think that "grace" is refering to a specific person. I think that it refers to the "grace" of a woman. The part that makes him complete is gone. But it means something different to everybody. In my eyes it is one of the most beautiful songs written.

If you look in their CD booklets about who wrote the song, all the band members names are listed. So it is quite possible that someone else had ideas or feelings for lyrics. And they all write the music together as well. But I have also heard the step-dad theory and that's what I believe. But people may want to take it in different contexts. I personally listened to this song a lot when I was depressed about my girlfriend of 4 years leaving me. My grace and happiness was gone, I felt like doing nothing but drinking and smoking and listening to this song...and holloween. Sometimes I still that I could never love again, so much as I loved her. And I also felt that I didn't need my eyes or heart either, because I felt as if why have them if she doesn't love me?
Anyways, I just recently found this site and I love how you can express yourself and it seems that almost everyone can relate. It's a nice vent as well. Thanks for listening.
Oh, about the whole "grace" thing...Dave has twins named Stella and Grace. Dave's sister who was murdered was named Anne. And the woman Dave asked to marry like 3 was named (something) Grey...jennifer maybe? But I say take this song in whatever context it relates to you, personally. That makes it all more the better....LOVE IT!!
