Lyrics for Grace Is Gone as interpreted by antifox64

Grace Is Gone Lyrics
Neon shines through smoky eyes tonight,
It's 2 AM, I'm drunk again,
It's heavy on my mind, it's heavy on my mind.

I could never love again,
So much as I love you.
Where you end, where I begin,
Is like a river going through.

Take my heart, take my eyes,
Cause I'll need them no more.
If never again they'll fall upon,
The one I so adore.

Excuse me please, one more drink.
Could you make it strong,
Cause I don't need to think.
She broke my heart,
My grace is gone.
Another drink and I'll move on.

One drink to remember,
And another to forget.
How could I ever dream to find a love like this again?
One drink to remember, another to forget...

Excuse me please, one more drink.
Would you make it strong,
Cause I don't need to think.
She broke my heart,
My grace is gone.
Another drink and I'll move on.
One more drink and I'll move on.

You think of things impossible,
Then the sun refuse to shine.
I woke with you beside me,
Your cold hand lay in mine.

Excuse me please, one more drink.
Could you make it strong,
Cause I don't need to think.
She broke my heart,
My grace is gone.
Another drink and I'll go...

Excuse me please, one more drink.
Could you make it strong,
Cause I don't need to think.
She broke my heart, my grace is gone.
Another drink and I'll move on,
One more drink and I'll move on.
One more drink my grace is gone.

This is such a great song to listen to if you are in one of those depressed, sad moods. It isn't a very "cryptic" song, so it is rather easy to figure out what it means. Just by listening to the chorus you can tell it is about someone breaking your heart, and drinking the pain away.

I seem to have taken a different meaning to this song than most people: yes, the narrator is drinking away his troubles, but his love didn't just leave him. From the lyrics "You think of things impossible, then the sun refuse to shine. I woke with you beside me, your cold hand lay in mine," I think his love has *died.*

just because it says that her cold hand lay in his, does not have to mean that his love has died... he's speaking like one day he realized that she wasn't feelin it and that they were no longer the way they used to be.

interesting...never thought of that. I think it fits. I supose it's possible for her to 'break his heart' in her death, but since it's never really said that way, you automaticly believe she *did* something.

I Believe she died as well...He says in the song "I don't need to think. She broke my heart..." If she died she didn't mean to break his heart...The way he sings it , it sounds like he doesn't need to think she broke his heart....At least that is what i thought...before i saw the lyrics written. I Completly Agree with imp2k1, his reasoning is another one of the points i thought too. Either way...It is a great song.

There is a live version of this song in which Dave says how he wrote it after his stepfather passed away and that it was somewhat from his mother's perspective (though he believes "she's much stronger than this character")... i think it's a beautiful song

Hate To Tell Ya But You Are All Wrong The song Grace Is Gone is about daves father.......who has passed away dave thought it would be sorta different if he wrote the lyrics with her and she insted of directly sayin "him or he"

The first time I heard this song I thought it was just beautiful- but then I began to hear the deep sadness and sorrow behind it. I think it's wonderful how Dave Matthews' voice can match the tone of the song perfectly. We all sing this song after being dumped- "I don't need to think"... I don't know what it's about, but I sure know it's one of my favorites.

This song to me means is one he wrote while he was going through his divorce and if what I heard is correct this song was written cuz his wife left him (so his love life died, but not his wife) and this is the song that prevented the official release back when it was scheduled to come out. But that album has a darker tone to it than his others and thus the reason it was scrubbed.

Maybe Dave's love died figuratively, not literally, and he uses the cold hand line to symbolize the death of his love.

And by the way, you can't say anyone is wrong with this stuff...it's all interpretation, and I'm sure Dave wrote knowingly it could go many ways...

Well if you think about it, when people write their songs and think on how they take it as, not as others may take it. but then later when you are finished, you see other points of view from not only others but from yourself just pending on the mood your in

Just my thought

the first time i heard this song was in santa clara two summers ago and ever since then whenever i hear it, it conjures this image of dave in a bar with neon lights flashing (hence the "neon shines through smokey eyes" reference) and its peaceful..almost surreal. dave rocks. i'd marry him if it weren't for ashley. (i met him, too..HA!)

Hard to tell exactly what happened to his love, either she changed, stopped loving him, or died. But I think it's pretty obvious that he is drowning his sorrows, and feels he will never be the same again, after losing one he so adored. His 'grace is gone', could mean, her name is grace, or her 'grace' being her trait. Or it could mean his innocence in finding a true love left with her. His grace he felt being with her could never be matched. Love will be different from now on...
meh, two cents and all...love the song, though.

i think it's about a heartbroken man. This song is so incredibly touching. I could just picture this guy sitting at a bar with tears at the edge of his eyes begging the bartender for just one more drink because all he wants to do is forget about this pain in his heart. Because of this girl who left him, his grace is gone.

I think we've all felt like this about someone we've loved at one point or another. We just feel helpless.

Seriously, is there a person out there who hasn't been in this exact situation.

BTW, if you need it to apply to yourself, you can interchange 'my-grace' with any other 2 syllabyle name.

This is what i've heard.....dave said in one of his acoustic versions that his step dad died and it was hard to fit a step-dad into a song so he did the "easy" thing and wrote about a girl breaking his heart....that is really easy to write about though...happens all the time....

no need to argue over meanings--simply a beautiful song, and it may mean something different to you than what it originally meant to him--it doesn't matter, that's why dave is so great

I do believe that this song is about the woman he asked to marry him three times and she denied him all three times. I also think that her name was Grace. Look at how many songs mention hte name Grace....its more than just a coincidence. And in all of them he talks about her being gone. I think that when he says "your cold hand lay in mine" that it is a reference to her heart because she isn't cold towards him in love terms.

I wish I could find the quote, but this song was written about the death of Dave's step-father. He took all those feelings, wrote them down, and turned them into GIG. It sounds nicer to think that Dave is singing to his lost love rather than his lost step-father.

No offense Gottalovethehits, I love DMB too, but this website, it's called songmeanings, that's what they do here, argue about meanings... of songs.

Peace
