So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Plug me into the world I belong to
The god of dreams has died and left us tomorrow
Plug me into the world I belong to
The god of dreams has died and left us tomorrow
We don't have time to even blink anymore
What if you miss something you wish you ignored?
Swallowed by the light, you thought it would kill the ache
You were amazed
But I transform
Washed away
Feel the rain
Fear the pain
Don't think you'll be forgotten
No one forgets you anymore
Anymore
Now you listen to them sing
I hear, I hear them calling
With melodies of disbelief
I hear, I hear them calling me
And there is something that you wish you'd forgotten
You were amazed
You thought that your design was so unique
But in the end you all will suffer the same
Now you listen to them sing
I hear, I hear them calling
With melodies of disbelief
I hear, I hear them calling me
Impossible to move
Impossible to think
Plug me in
Plug me in
Plug me in
You're trapped inside a dream
Come back from the brink
Let go
Let go
Of your suspended disbelief
You're in my realm
And I'll lead your race into decay
Oh such an easy being
Oh such an easy prey
Through the cracks I feed you
Until the day you
Overload
Plug me into the world I belong to
The god of dreams has died and left us tomorrow
Tomorrow
Now you listen to them sing
I hear, I hear them calling
With melodies of disbelief
I hear, I hear them calling me
The god of dreams has died and left us tomorrow
Plug me into the world I belong to
The god of dreams has died and left us tomorrow
We don't have time to even blink anymore
What if you miss something you wish you ignored?
Swallowed by the light, you thought it would kill the ache
You were amazed
But I transform
Washed away
Feel the rain
Fear the pain
Don't think you'll be forgotten
No one forgets you anymore
Anymore
Now you listen to them sing
I hear, I hear them calling
With melodies of disbelief
I hear, I hear them calling me
And there is something that you wish you'd forgotten
You were amazed

But in the end you all will suffer the same
Now you listen to them sing
I hear, I hear them calling

I hear, I hear them calling me

Plug me in
Plug me in

I hear, I hear them calling me

As for the meaning of this track I think it has to do with how we’re all by some means plugged in & technology has taken over everyone & everything in it’s path. The world as we once knew it is ceasing to exist, and eventually we may all end up a race of mindless programmed robots.
