english translation from dutch

Oh I’m fine here
I have nothing to complain
I only forget my name
Oh I’m fine here

No you don’t have to ask
What I want to eat soon
The rain runs over the window
Slowly

And I don’t know if I ever
Still going away
Oh I’m fine here
So I don’t have to know

How long I still have to stay
Oh I’m fine here
So you don’t have to ask
Whether I sometimes regret

I’m scared when I sleep
I just did a thing wrong
And I’d do it again
You, you, you

Was my medicine
You, you, you
Was too much for me
Now I have to reince

Oh, now I have to reince
You, you, you
Was too good for me
Mothers, love your daughters

And warn them in time
For strangers and alleys
Mothers, love your sons
And keep them for a long time

Because later I come across them
I’m scared when I sleep
I didn’t do anything
“This bird must fly” you said

So I gave you wings
And heavy, for wearing
From your wooden suit
“This bird must fly” you said

So I gave you wings
Do you think someone me
Have you ever Thank you?
From me forever

You, you, you
Was my medicine
You, you, you
Was too much for me

Now I have to reince
Oh, now I have to reince
You, you, you
Was too good for me

    Song Meaning

Charlotte says of this song; Afkicken is loosely translated as ‘kicking the habit.’ If you were talking about it in Dutch you would be talking about getting clean from some kind of drugs or alcohol. The way that I’ve worked it into the lyrics is more symbolic. Lyrically, the protagonist of the song, the narrator, is speaking from the point of view of being institutionalized for killing a loved one.
