So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
When will you wake up
You just can't get enough
And when I see your face
I think of all you take
With arms wide
Wide open
You suffocate the breath out of me
Stuck in my ways this time
I can't forget about it
Vanquish your thoughtless crime
The one that hits the hardest
Nothing to pass the time
I don't accept your sorry
Battle of evercry
Here lies the dead and fallen
Hand press on my chest honey
Like a river flowing blood I be
Oh please love allow me
To demonstrate all the dark around me
Stuck in my ways this time
I can't forget about it
Vanquish your thoughtless crime
The one that hits the hardest
Nothing to pass the time
I don't accept your sorry
Battle of evercry
Here lies the dead and fallen
Ooo
All of this is getting old
Ahhh
The weight of it
Is not worth gold
When you call my name
I see right through you
I know all about you
And when you call my name
We are now finished
I no longer feel it
Stuck in my ways this time
Stuck in my ways this time
I can't forget about it
Vanquish your thoughtless crime
The one that hits the hardest
Nothing to pass the time
I don't accept your sorry
Battle of evercry
Here lies the dead and fallen
Stuck in my ways this time
I can't forget about it
Vanquish your thoughtless crime
The one that hits the hardest
Nothing to pass the time
I don't accept your sorry
Battle of evercry

I think this about being in a relationship with someone who is becoming suffocating and draining & then having to end it do to this, then when they want you back - turning their pleas away. I posted this analysis as a comment on the video on youtube & the artist themselves (My Position, aka Joe Marks replied) - You\'re very much on point with that thought! lots of people have made the mistake, myself included of letting someone pull us back because we either still just care about that person too much and hope the outcome will be better or we don\'t want to feel like the bad person for "breaking their heart" by breaking up when it was all a manipulation tactic. Or they simply just don\'t have the emotional maturity to let something that\'s not working close. Then you get burned again.. This is that point of saying enough! Thanks for checking it out!
