So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Single use, the future is all mine
Give it fast, the future is all mine
In your face, in your body, on your skin, you can't deny me, on your skin, on your skin, on your
skin
In your food, in the water, in the air, yeah I'm right there, in the air, in the air, in the air
I'm a silent killer, seeping in
choking your planet from within
Hello hello my name is plastic (it's not fantastic)
Hello hello my name is plastic (it's not fantastic)
My fate is service, was filled so fast
You used me once, thrown away like trash
Hello hello my name is plastic (my name is plastic)
(Roam the lands, roam the streets
This is my new home, where I didn't want to be)
In your face, in your food, in your water, in your body, on your skin, in the air, everywhere
Single use, the future is all mine
Give it fast, the future is all mine
Hello hello my name is plastic (it's not fantastic)
Hello hello my name is plastic (it's not fantastic)
My fate is service, was filled so fast
You used me once, thrown away like trash
Hello hello my name is plastic
Down every rabbit hole, up every apple tree, you can't dispose of me, I'm eternal
What is my name, what is my name?
What is my name, what is my name?
Hello hello my name is plastic (it's not fantastic)
Hello hello my name is plastic (it's not fantastic)
My fate is service, was filled so fast
You used me once, thrown away like trash
Oil in my veins made in refinery
My name is plastic

From the band themselves: “Many people have expressed their views on plastics and the problems associated with them, with their overproduction. But no one cares how it is the other way around. What do plastics think of people….?"
