Snowfall

Under the pale grey sky we roam
And in the river we drown
Beneath the freezing moon we walk
And in the wind we bow

Taivaanrantaan, Ukkonen
Suru kantaa erilleen

Snow, bury me
Lay my bones to the deep
Bury me
Taivaanrantaan, suru kantaa

Snowfall

Open the gates
For the wolf of North
Embrace the sleeping sea
Beyond the waves
Across the silent stream
Where we will meet

Taivaanrantaan, Ukkonen
Suru kantaa erilleen

And in the river we drown

Snow, bury me
Lay my bones to the deep
Bury me
Taivaanrantaan, suru kantaa Pohjoiseen

    My Interpretation

Lyrics of Taivaanranta (Horizon) with English translations

Snowfall Under the pale grey sky we roam And in the river we drown Beneath the freezing moon we walk & in the wind we bow Taivaanrantaan, Ukkonen Suru kantaa erilleen (english: To the sky, thunder grief carries apart) Snow, bury me Lay my bones to the deep Bury me Taivaanrantaan, suru kantaa (english: To the skyline, grief carries) Snowfall Open the gates For the wolf of North Embrace the sleeping sea Beyond the waves Across the silent stream Where we will meet Taivaanrantaan, Ukkonen Suru kantaa erilleen (english: To the skyline, thunder grief carries apart) And in the river we drown (chorus) Pohjoiseen (english: North).

Lyrically & thematically the UKKO-album (the album 'Taivaanranta' is from) explores themes of death, healing, rebirth, and faith with English & Finnish languages mixed seamlessly together. The album name UKKO honors the father figure of the band who passed away less than a year ago; a devastating tragedy for its members. UKKO is also a euphemism of the Finnish pre-Christian mythological god of the sky, thunder, weather, and harvest. I think this theme is carried on throughout this track: the processing of grief, the storms one has to endure in ones lifetime, & the fate that awaits if we fail to get out ahead of it in time.
