So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
We were young, you and I
Had the night on our side
I was king, you were queen
In a kingdom of dreams
When the rain hit me hard
You were here by my side
In my arms you'd belong
Tell me, why did we go separate ways?
I can't help it, I'm losin'
After you've gone, live in the wind and the rain
And ever since you've been gone away
There's no love, there's no way
(As we go separate ways)
After you've gone, I thought that nothing could do us no harm
And now I see that, baby, I was wrong
There's no love, there's no way
As we've gone separate ways
As the years pass us by, I will still feel alive
When you came with your kiss and you left with a smile
Still you knew all this time we were livin' a lie
You could never be mine
Oh, I remember the day, late September in May
How you broke my heart when he took you away
I can still hear you cry on the day that we died
Oh, no
I can't help it, I'm losin'
After you've gone, live in the wind and the rain
And ever since you've been gone away
There's no love, there's no way
(As we go separate ways)
After you've gone, I thought that nothing could do us no harm
And now I see that, baby, I was wrong
There's no love, there's no way
As we've gone separate ways
I'll be waiting for, for an open door
To the dark, oh
I've been searching for, for an open door
To your heart, oh
Now the love is gone, but I'm holding on
To your eyes (To your eyes)
Oh, after you've gone, live in the wind and the rain
And ever since you've been gone away
There's no love, there's no way
(As we go separate ways)
After you've gone, I thought that nothing could do us no harm
And now I see that, baby, I was wrong
There's no love and there's no way
(As we go separate ways)
There's no love, there's no way
'Cause I'm going insane
Yeah, yeah
Oh
(As we go separate ways)
No, no, no

I think this is about a deep regret over a lost love that someone didn't see coming, that has turned their world upside down.
