I think this song is about how some people when faced with a dark period in their life; such as illness, addiction, or any sort of strife will react by abandoning all hope and just hiding themselves away. That doesn't do them any good as they end up on a road to nowhere or worst yet, suicidal. This song is saying when things are at there worst, that's the moment when you need to discard your fear and find any strength that's left within you to rise up out of the jaws of defeat (wake up, get unstuck as the lyrics state).
