The Rock and Roll Alternative was a nationally syndicated radio program that ran from 1978-1992. Hosted by George Gimarc, The show was the first to give nationwide exposure to many bands that would later become big names: Devo, INXS, R.E.M., The Bangles, and many more. This show is where the term alternative music came from. In 1980, back when the Bangles were known as the colors, George acquired a copy of one of their demo tapes. He started playing it, and one song, "The Real World" was met with audience liking. When the Bangles first visited Dallas, they made a guest appearance on the Rock and Roll Alternative. As one account of the story goes, after the broadcast, George was talking with the band. Suzanna commented "You've really helped our careers out a lot. If there's anything we can do for you, let us know." George looked a bit uneasy and said "Well, actually there is. I need a theme song for my show." The band was a bit too stunned to respond initially, but then agreed.
