Before the jungle closes in [a letter to America]
The candles are a cocoa hue [Inside the room of missing men]
A hundred mercenary souls
We are the army of the night

One foot in front of the other babe,
One baby step
I feel a soldier of fortune
Marching inside of me

We drink our gin in Mandalay [afraid of what we have become]
This is the moment of intrigue
A tiger dreaming of his prey
This is the edge of history

One foot in front of the other babe,
One baby step
I feel a soldier of fortune
Marching inside of me

I'll go out on a limb and say that this lyric is just an excuse to use the Soldier Of Fortune line. I watched the film clip and noted all the Australian tokenisms in it (the song is Australian).

Especially telling was the use of the indigenous population to fetishize some kind of Romantic notion of Affinity.
