the song is about a girl who had parents that didnt care for her as a child... she used to hide in the trees to see if her parents noticed she was missing. she was...

She sits up high surrounded by the sun,
One million branches and she loves every one.
"Mom and dad, did you search for me?
I've been up here so long I'm going crazy"

The sun went down we ended up on the ground,
I heard the train shake the windows
You screamed over the sound,
And as we own this night
I'll put your body to the test with mine.
This love was out of control,
3, 2, 1, where did it go?

Now don't be crazy yes now of course you can stay here.
(Been in a touring band for going on ten years)
Big deal well I guess you're official.
I only said it because I know what it's like to feel.

Burned out
It gets you down,
Oh, We've all been there sometimes
But tonight I'll make you feel beautiful once again.

And as the sun went down we ended up on the ground.
I heard the train shake the windows,
You screamed over the sound.
And as we own this night,
I'll put your body to the test with mine.
This love was out of control,
3, 2, 1, where did it go?

If I were you, I'd put that away.
See, you're just wasted in
Thinking about the past again.
Darling, you'll be okay.

She said,
"If you were me, you'd do the same
'Cause I can't take anymore
I'll tear the shades and close the door.
Everything's not alright and I would rather..."

And as the sun went down we ended up on the ground,
I heard the train shake the windows
You screamed over the sound.
And as we own this night,
I'll put your body to the test with mine.
This love was out of control,
Tell me where did it go?

My Interpretation:As many have said before, I believe this song is about suicide. I realize this sounds rather negative, but I really think this song is uplifting and beautiful. It's not simply about death, its about fighting to keep someone you love alive. It's about doing all you can to make someone believe that they will be okay and have to keep fighting. In specific the connection between these two people seems to be romantic. The girl is the one who is committing suicide, and the boy is trying to save her. That's just how the song is written, so that's how I'll explain it in further context, but it really can be interpreted vice versa, or it can be a family member, friend, etc. trying to save a loved one.

She sits up high surrounded by the sun
One million branches and she loves every one
"Mom and dad, did you search for me?
I've been up here for so long I'm going crazy"

(This first verse shows that the girl is in a terrible state of mind. The imagery used in the first two lines, describing her sitting up high in a tree, surrounded by the sun, shows that she is avoiding everything, and hiding herself away. The next two lines, show that she feels very alone, and forgotten, perhaps even unlovable or unworthy. It could also suggest literal problems at home.)

And as the sun went down we ended up on the ground
I heard the train shake the windows
    You screamed over the sound
And as we own this night
I put your body to the test with mine
This love was out of control
    3-2-1 where did it go?

(The chorus shows that a boy is reaching out to her. He falls in love with her, and wants her to know that she is important. Parts of the chorus hint at sex, but it isn't said in a dirty way, but more of him just wanting to be with her because he cares for her so much.)

    Now don't be crazy
Yes now of course you can stay here.
Been in a touring band for going on ten years.
"Big deal," she said, "I guess you're official"
I only said it 'cause I know what it's like to feel

    Burned out
    It gets you down,
    We've all been there sometimes
But tonight I'll make you feel beautiful once again

(This verse, shows the doubt this girl is feeling. She doesn't like having someone come in and try to make her feel better, because it scares her. She starts pushing him away, by turning comforting words into more of a bash against her. He keeps trying, insisting that he'll make her feel beautiful and worthy again.)

If I were you, I'd put that away
    See, you're just wasted
And thinking about the past again
    Darling you'll be okay

(He is trying to stop her from committing suicide. He is telling her that this will be a mistake, and that she's not thinking straight and is letting the past get the best of her. He is telling her that she'll be okay, and pleading with her to not do this.)

    She said,
"If you were me, you'd do the same
    'Cause I can't take anymore
I'll draw the shades and close the door
Everything's not alright and I would rather..."

(The girl feels defeated. She says that he would do the same thing if he was her, and she can't handle it anymore. She's decided to give up. Nothing feels okay anymore and she is done.)

General Comment:"Vic told us about this song when I was them live last night. He said that he dated a girl who used to run away from home and hide out in a tree at the end of her garden and wait for her parents to look for her, but they didn't care enough to bother, so she kept leaving for a while, but they never noticed and never tried to find her."

Song Meaning:Actually the song is about a 19 year old Australian girl named Olivia Penpraze who committed suicide in March 2012 because she couldn't "Hold On Til May" which was her planned suicide date. If you ask Vic about it in person or on Facebook etc he will tell you the same thing.
She was one of my friends and I have had conversations with Vic via the Internet about how amazing she was.
    R.I.P, darling. xo
