(Ho)
(Hey)
(Ho)
(Hey)
(Ho) I been tryin' to do it right
(Hey) I been livin' a lonely life
(Ho) I been sleepin' here instead
(Hey) I been sleepin' in my bed
(Ho) I been sleepin' in my bed
(Hey)
(Ho)
(Ho) so show me family
(Hey) all the blood that I will bleed
(Ho) I don't know where I belong
(Hey) I don't know where I went wrong
(Ho) but I can write a song
(Hey)
I belong with you, you belong with me
You're my sweetheart
I belong with you, you belong with me
You're my sweet
(Ho)
(Hey) come on, now
(Ho) hey
(Hey)
(Ho) I don't think you're right for him
(Hey) think of what it might've been if we
(Ho) took a bus to Chinatown
(Hey) I'd be standin' on Canal
(Ho) and Bowery
(Hey)
(Ho) she'd be standin' next to me
(Hey)
I belong with you, you belong with me
You're my sweetheart
I belong with you, you belong with me
You're my sweetheart
Love, we need it now
Let's hope for some
'Cause, oh, we're bleedin' out
I belong with you, you belong with me
You're my sweetheart
I belong with you, you belong with me
You're my sweet
(Ho)

For me, this song isn't about a love lost, but a love that never happened. Maybe its just me and my experiences affecting my interpretation of this song, but to me its about a guy who treats this girl right and loves her the way she should be loved, but she doesn't reciprocate those feelings (I been trying to do it right / I been living a lonely life / I been sleeping in my bed.....). Despite him doing right by her this whole time and all the things he does for her, he's gotten no where. He's done everything right, so he can't understand how she doesn't reciprocate his feelings. (All the blood that I will bleed / I don't know where I belong / I don't know where I went wrong). There's another guy and he's probably not a good person and doesn't treat her well, but she stays with him anyway. If she would have gone out with him things would have been different, things would have been so much better. (I don't think you're right for him / think of what might have been / if we took a bus to China Town). She's his sweet heart and always will be and they belong together in his mind, but she never realizes it for herself.
Maybe I'm just reading this in terms of my own life because what I described happened to me. The only difference is I ended up with the girl in the end. :).
I don't know how many people have been to New York, but Canal street is known for its jewelery, and Canal and Bowery were the intersection that was once labeled the "Diamond Capital" of New York. I think the line "Think of what it might have been if we took a bus to china town, I'd be standing on Canal, and Bowery..she'd be standing next to me." refers to her decision not to marry him over somebody else, that if she'd chosen him, they would be picking out her engagement/wedding ring right now. This song speaks to me too, but on the opposite end ;) An ex (a relationship that ended on good terms, not due to a lack of love, but a move and decisions regarding children from previous relationships) moved back into town a few years later, unexpectedly, and was hoping to rekindle what we'd had before. By that time I'd already been engaged to somebody else, who my children adored and is ALSO an amazing person. It was a TOUGH decision...very, very tough. Especially because our children got along so well (he now has full custody of his kids which is what enabled him to move them back to their home town, he'd followed them and their mother to another state so he could have joint custody), and we really do care. Yet he is respectful enough of me and my (now) husband to keep his distance...but for a while there it was hard for him (and me) to accept that what we had before couldn't be brought back. I think this song is about a man who loves a woman he can't be with, because she didn't "choose" him, even though she loves him. "I've been trying to do it right, I've been living a lonely life. I've been been sleeping here instead, I've been sleeping in my bed. Sleeping in my bed." -indicating he wasn't "sleeping" there before- Perhaps she is married and chose not to leave her husband for him, perhaps she is in a long-term relationship and isn't willing to break it off for him.
A beautiful and personally touching reply that fits the song just right.
Definitely the same thing that is happening in my life right now. How'd you wind up getting the girl? Congrats
I just kept being myself. I showed her what kind of person I really was. I'm not gonna lie, it took a while. I mean, there was always something there, but she was hung up on this ex-boyfriend that treated her like crap. So by being myself I showed her how happy things would be with me because Ii was always there for her and treated her with respect. I'm not going to lie, there was a mutual attraction initially, which I think is necessary, but that ex was the stumbling block we both had to overcome. And we did. I think this song would have been me if I would have just given up and moved on.
great comment. i'm experiencing the same situation as well. i really appreciate your comment, it made me realize that I'm not going to give up on this girl because she's amazing
Just got engaged to that girl I was talking about. Never give up. To quote another Lumineers song, " I never sink when you're with me. Oh Lord, I'm your Dead Sea!"
Please let me know how it turns out! Sorry I replied so late!
Same thing happening to me, hope i end up with her
