You take your white finger
Slide the nail under the top and bottom buttons of my blazer
Relax the fraying wool, slacken ties
And I'm not to look at you in the shoe, but the eyes, find the eyes

[Chorus]
Find me and follow me through corridors, refectories and files
You must follow me, leave this academic factory
You will find me in the matinee
The dark of the matinee
It's better in the matinee
The dark of the matinee is mine
Yes it's mine

I time every journey to bump into you, accidentally
I charm you and tell you of the boys I hate
All the girls I hate
All the words I hate
All the clothes I hate
How I'll never be anything I hate
You smile, mention something that you like
How you'd have a happy life if you did the things you like

[Chorus]

So I'm on BBC2 now, telling Terry Wogan how I made it and
What I made is unclear, but his deference is and his laughter is
My words and smile are so easy now
Yes, It's easy now
Yes, It's easy now

[Chorus]

General Comment:I think this is a clever take inspired by the concepts and ideas pruposed by David Icke in 1991 on the Terry Wogan show.

As all songs ,its not at all too defined and mixed with other ideas to show popular ambiguity, as someone has already said it may be about a girl also when it refers to the second verse. Where the singer claims that he times every journey to accidentally bump into them...
    Lyrics;
"I time every journey to bump into you, accidentally
I charm you and tell you of the boys I hate
    All the girls I hate
    All the words I hate
    All the clothes I hate
How I'll never be anything I hate
You smile, mention something that you like
How you'd have a happy life if you did the things you like"

I think it's the ramblings of an extreme point of you view which starts topic of conversation between the male and female in a spontanious situation. As some one stated the singer(or person in the story portrayed by the singer is this song) is suprised that she smiels and mentions something that shes likes in reactions to all his nervous negative energy,.. which somewhat allures him.

However I think the first verse is about coorporatations and men in suits, which the storyteller/ onlooker does not like, as he refers to a white finger( maybe sugesting white as the standard generic symboloism of pure) and suggests for it to relax its tie and blazer etc.

    In the chorus the lyrics are;

"Find me and follow me through corridors, refectories and files
You must follow me, leave this academic factory
You will find me in the matinee
    The dark of the matinee
    It's better in the matinee
The dark of the matinee is mine
    Yes it's mine"

I think this is someone asking to follow their views or ideas/theories and get away from the academic factory of life. Its some kind of gathering of a group getting away from it all weather it is right or wrong, they claim it to be better where they are going.

When I searched for matinee to truly define it, I learned that it was to describe a theoatrical performance which would suggest role play maybe and some kind of made up story(which most plays are based on)

So i think here he is telling someone to save him and where they might find him in this "dark of the matinee" type of world.

Then lastly is the 3rd verse which inspired me to write this, because the lyrics are strangely reflective and reminiscent of what actually happened in 1991 to David Icke on national tv as he shared his views on life and conspiracies/theories.

He was ridiculed with laughter on the show and difference of opinion to him was made known very clear.

    The lyrics are;
"So I'm on BBC2 now, telling Terry Wogan how I made it and
What I made is unclear, but his deference is and his laughter is
My words and smile are so easy now
    Yes, It's easy now
    Yes, It's easy now"

So when he says "I'm telling Terry Wogan how I made it" he is saying that he is telling him on live tv of his theories and how he came to make those theories etc. Even he is unclear of his ideas he still belives them and mentions its easy to smile now as he trys to protect himself from the ridicule bestowed upon him.

Check out David Icke on youtube 1991 and the Terry Wogan show he was on @ youtube.com/…

So as you can celarly see there, this is what gave me the idea for this, I'm not saying its right by no means but thought it was quite interesting:) These are just the main points...maybe reading the lyrics more will find other things that relate to this, but maybe they wont.... I didn't want to go into too much detail more than I already have done.

I have always loved the song no matter what it means! thanks for reading
