Some figures mentioned here: Prince Louis of Battenberg (later renamed Louis Alexander Mountbatten) was an Admiral in the British navy and a former German prince. He was the first Marquess of Milford Haven. Admiral Lord John Fisher was the first baron of Fisher. His term as admiral saw many reforms he spearheaded, such as switching from wood to steel battleships. Hackney is most likely the London borough next to Islington. The place grew very rapidly until world war I. Worthing is a coastal city in Sussex known for flint mines.
The title of this song, according to The Early Years, was originally just "England." It was based on things Al's grandparents told him about life "before the big war" (World war I.) According to Al's grandparents, when Archduke Franz Ferdinand was shot by Serbian nationalists, the general public thought it little more than a political assassination. Nobody thought it would ever lead to World War I.
