So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
You've got to give it to me
You've got to give it to me
You've got to give it to me
You've got to give it to me
You're so slick now, know every trick now
You know I want it, I want it so bad
You know I need it, I can't believe it
So come on baby, Please relieve it
Now you've been bugging me, Every night now
You say you want it, You want it right now
I can't get to it, I can't get through it
So come on baby, Please
You've got to get it up (give it up)
You've got to get it up (give it up)
You've got to get it up (give it up)
You've got to get it up (give it up)
Why keep me cold
When it's so warm inside
Come on baby
Your love is too good to hide
You've got to give it to me
You've got to give it to me
You've got to give it to me
You're so slick now, know every trick now
You know I want it, I want it so bad
You know I need it, I can't believe it
So come on baby, Please relieve it
Now you've been bugging me, Every night now
You say you want it, You want it right now
I can't get to it, I can't get through it
So come on baby, Please
You've got to get it up (give it up)
You've got to get it up (give it up)
You've got to get it up (give it up)
You've got to get it up (give it up)
Why keep me cold
When it's so warm inside
Come on baby
Your love is too good to hide

Can't believe no commentary for J. Geils here. (???) They are great rockers after all, are they not? They always made me proud to be from BHWAHSTAHN !
This song has a great Rock-Steady vibe to it -- ALMOST true reggae. I love the long rhythmic fade-out at the end of the studio version of this song with the hand drumming.
5th-graders sang this song at Little League growing up !
Later on, "Blow Your Face Out" was a favorite album of my wasted youth ☺ It came with a sticker on it: "This record made to be played loud" ha ha ha
