I remember tears streaming down your face
When I said I'll never let you go
When all those shadows almost killed your light
I remember you said don't leave me here alone
But all that's dead and gone and passed tonight

Just close your eyes, the sun is going down
You'll be alright, no one can hurt you now
Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound

Don't you dare look out your window, darling, everything's on fire
The war outside our door keeps raging on
Hold onto this lullaby even when the music's gone, gone

Just close your eyes, the sun is going down
You'll be alright, no one can hurt you now
Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound

Ooh (ooh)
Ooh (ooh)
Oh whoa (oh whoa)
Oh whoa (oh whoa)
Ooh (ooh)
Ooh (ooh)
Oh whoa
Oh whoa

Just close your eyes
You'll be alright
Come morning light
You and I'll be safe and sound

Ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh

    Song Meaning

I think that this song really shows that Taylor loves the Hunger Games trilogy. It may have been written and performed for the first movie, but I feel like the song is based in Mockingjay at some point. In my opinion it is Katniss singing to Prim whilst Prim sleeps at District 13.

Verse 1 is Katniss reminiscing about when she volunteered as tribute for Prim

"i remember tears streaming down your face when i said i'd never let you go" that is just reflecting how Katniss wouldn't let Prim die

"when all those shadows almost killed your light" she doesn't want Prim's innocence to disappear

"i remember you said, don't leave me here alone" Prim was scared that like her father, Katniss will not return to them alive

"but all that's dead and gone and passed tonight" it doesn't matter as Katniss is back to protect Prim, even though she's matured

"just close your eyes, the sun is going down you'll be alright, no one can hurt you now come morning light, you and i'll be safe and sound" the chorus basically just is Katniss singing a Lullaby to Prim because she still views her as the innocent child with the ducktail, despite Prim growing into a mature young lady

"Don't you dare look out your window, darling everything's on fire" It has now snapped to present day and she is singing about the revolution (Fire is Catching), which she still wants to protect Prim from

"the war outside our door keeps raging on" pretty obvious really, referring to the civil war occurring between the Districts and the Capital

"hold on to this lullaby, even when the music's gone, gone" Katniss does not want Prim to grow up too quickly, because that would cause real world problems for Prim, as does happen near the end of Mockingjay

then the chorus again and then the Oh,Oh's that appear (though not on this page) suggest an attempt to sooth Prim's brain by Katniss, so as to put her in a deep, and safe, sleep, before going back to the chorus

that's how i feel about Safe and Sound
