You walk around in other towns
I've seen you out, Just hanging 'round
It's what you chose and I suppose
You'll meet me one day, meet me one day
You throw away every other dream
Taking nova baby to the dollar machine
That party dress is such a mess
You'll need me one day
Need me one day soon
All your enemies
Smile when you fall
You take it cause you
Don't know what you want
You don't know what you want
All this love of mine
All my precious time
You waste it cause you
Don't know what you want
You don't know what you want
There fo the kids, the have-nots
Elevator ladies in the parking lots
You saw it all and I recall
The dream you told me, dream you told me
This empty heart you left me with
The ribbon on my parting gift
I'm falling hard for every yard
Of the dream you sold me
Dream you sold me
All your enemies
Smile when you fall
You take it cause you
Don't know what you want
You don't know what you want
All this love of mine
All my precious time
You waste it cause you
Don't know what you want
You don't know what you want
I've seen you out, Just hanging 'round
It's what you chose and I suppose
You'll meet me one day, meet me one day
You throw away every other dream
Taking nova baby to the dollar machine
That party dress is such a mess
You'll need me one day
Need me one day soon
All your enemies
Smile when you fall
You take it cause you
Don't know what you want
You don't know what you want
All this love of mine
All my precious time
You waste it cause you
Don't know what you want
You don't know what you want
There fo the kids, the have-nots
Elevator ladies in the parking lots
You saw it all and I recall
The dream you told me, dream you told me
This empty heart you left me with

Of the dream you sold me
Dream you sold me

Smile when you fall

Don't know what you want
You don't know what you want

In a way the sentiment reminds me of "Wild World" by Cat Stevens - singing a warning song to a young woman about how the world may seem to smile upon you now, but watch out: your enemies will laugh and watch you fall. The warning is partially true, but coming from a jaded man who is heartbroken and using a lecture to try and rationalize his pain.
I really haven't understood yet what lines like ''taking nova baby to the dollar machine'' or ''there go the kids, the have-nots, elevater ladies in the parking lots'' mean, but lines like the first verse, and ''that party dress is such a mess'', ''you saw it all and I recall the dream you told me'', have personal meanings for me. That I could explain but won't. I suppose the easiest way I see it is, that this song is about a person waiting and waiting then eventually getting fed up with waiting on a person who doesn't know what they're doing with their life, love, emotions, and actions and what they want out of it. I assume in the context of the song - love, a strong/true 'relationship', sacrifice, and some worth-while-ness. ''You'll need me one day, need me one day soon.''
