Looking up from underneath
Fractured moonlight on the sea
Reflections still look the same to me
As before I went under

And it's peaceful in the deep
'Cause either way you cannot breathe
No need to pray, no need to speak
Now I am under

Oh, and it's breaking over me
A thousand miles out to the sea bed
Found the place to rest my head

(Never let me go, never let me go
Never let me go, never let me go)

And the arms of the ocean are carrying me
And all this devotion was rushing over me
And the questions I have for a sinner like me
But the arms of the ocean deliver me

Though the pressure's hard to take
It's the only way I can escape
It seems a heavy choice to make
But now I am under, oh

And it's breaking over me
A thousand miles down to the sea bed
I found the place to rest my head

(Never let me go, never let me go
Never let me go, never let me go)

And the arms of the ocean are carrying me
(So cold and so sweet)
And all this devotion was rushing out of me
And the questions I have for a sinner like me
But the arms of the ocean deliver me

And it's over and I'm going under
But I'm not giving up
I'm just giving in

Oh, slipping underneath
So cold and so sweet

In the arms of the ocean, so sweet and so cold
And all this devotion, well, I never knew at all
And the questions I have for a sinner released
In the arms of the ocean deliver me

(Never let me go, never let me go
Never let me go, never let me go)

Deliver me

(Never let me go, never let me go
Never let me go, never let me go)
Never let me go, never let me go)

Deliver me
(Never let me go, never let me go)
Never let me go, never let me go)

Deliver me
Never let me go, never let me go

And it's over
I'm going under
But I'm not giving up
I'm just giving in

Ah, slipping underneath
Wooh, so cold, but so sweet

General Comment:The way I see it its like she finds it more peaceful under the water(which it is btw) and it feels like all her problems and the sins she has committed are drowning out. ''The arms of the ocean... So cold and so sweet" Better feeling more comforting. Now she doesn't want to leave the ocean because of its comfort. ''Never let me go'' Sounds like its suicidal by doing that but it aint

Best part is when she says ''I'm not giving up, I'm just giving in''

General Comment:Does anyone know the definitive lyrics for the third line of the chorus? I first heard it as "the crushes I had," then "the crashes o'erhead," then "the crashes of Heaven," but it could also be "the crushes of Heaven" or even, as stated in these lyrics, "the questions I had..."

Beautiful song either way, about drowning and letting go of one's self.

General Comment:I've always loved the feeling of being underwater, especially sinking to the bottom of the pool and looking up through the water. I like the silence, and the weightlessness. Ever since I was a kid I've had dreams of being underwater; sometimes I could breathe, and other times I was drowning. This song really embodies something powerful for me, the raw force of the ocean and water in general, how it can be both peaceful and fatal. Listening to the song feels like riding the currents of the ocean.

    My Interpretation:Looking up from underneath
    Fractured moonlight on the sea
Reflections still look the same to me
    As before I went under

This part I see a girl underwater staring blankly at sky. To us looking at the water would see the fractured moonlight, but seeing as she's under everything (i.e. reflections) look the same. the "as before..." part before see went under she was probably looking in, so the reflections look like before she went under because she's on the other side.

And it's peaceful in the deep
    Cathedral where you cannot breathe
No need to pray no need to speak

Under water it's peaceful and quiet like a Cathedral but you can't breath surround by nothing but water. no need to pray/speak because she gave up the idea of God either as being real, her savior, or she just didn't care.

    And it's breaking over me
A thousand miles down to the sea bed
Found the place to rest my head
    Never let me go
    Never let me go

Breaking as in waves overhead and it took a thousand miles but she finally found peace which she couldn't do because the world was cruel and loud and she just couldn't find peace

And the arms of the ocean are carrying me
And all this devotion was rushing out of me
In the crushes of heaven for a sinner like me
But the arms of the ocean delivered me

The "arms of the ocean" that just trying to show the fact that she is indeed getting pulled/carried out further into the sea. The devotion would be the reasons she wanted to live (i.e. husband, family, parents, church?.) the last 2 lines deal with the church's point of things like committing suicide is wrong and she thinks she'll be on the outside, or rusty parts of heaven, but then she doesn't care because the ocean gave her the peace she was looking for, but could never find no matter how hard she tried.

Though the pressure's hard to take
It's the only way I can escape
It seems a heavy choice to make
And now I am under all

She's pretty far down and she knows th pressure of the water on her body is to take, or hard to endure, but it's the only way she can escape not her life, but other unknown circumstances.

    And it's breaking over me
A thousand miles down to the sea bed
Found the place to rest my head
    Never let me go
    Never let me go

did the 1st part but the never let me go part could be the sea not letting her go, or her family never forgetting her the way she was,

And the arms of the ocean are carrying me
And all this devotion was rushing out of me
In the crushes of heaven for a sinner like me
But the arms of the ocean delivered me

    (Done previously ^)

    And it's over
    And I'm going under
    But I'm not giving up
    I'm just giving in

This part like a last breath type of thinking, Her life's over she can't return, probably doesn't want to either. She saying she not giving up on life just giving to ocean' s will or she wants her family know she's not giving up but finally giving in to the pain she's lived with for who knows how long.

    I'm slipping underneath
    So cold and so sweet

slipping underneath kind of like going unconscious the water's cold but it's sweet, as in peaceful.

And the arms of the ocean
    So sweet and so cold
And all this devotion I never knew at all
In the crushes of heaven for a sinner released
But the arms of the ocean delivered me

The arms meaning it's surrounding her is like an oxymoron it's sweet giving her peace, but cold by taking away her life and it's literally cold.

    Never let me go
    Never let me go
    Deliver me
    Never let me go
    Never let me go
    Deliver me
    Never let me go
    Never let me go
    Deliver me
    Never let me go
    Never let me go

She's must likely talking to her family, never let her go in memory, or the ocean that's holding her and delivered her made her find peace,

    And it's over
    And I'm going under
    But I'm not giving up
    I'm just giving in

It's over as in no turning back now and again not giving up but giving in to the ocean trying to explain for her family's sake.

    I'm slipping underneath
    So cold and so sweet

She's going unconscious and it's cold because she thinks she has/wants to die or whatever drew her to the option, but she finally found peace her last dying thoughts.

General Comment:Actually, the song is about Virginia Woolfe. She committed suicide by drowning herself. Florence wrote this song about how it must have felt like. The love story you see in the video is based on her last note to her husband: "What I want to say is I owe all the happiness of my life to you. You have been entirely patient with me and incredibly good. I want to say that—everybody knows it. If anybody could have saved me it would have been you. Everything has gone from me but the certainty of your goodness. I can't go on spoiling your life any longer. I don't think two people could have been happier than we have been."
-A part of Virginia Wolf's last note to her husband

The older lady in the video that is mopping and watches Florence, I would assume, is suppose to be Virginia. Beautiful song and I cry every time I hear. Such a sad tragedy.

My Opinion:I feel as if it's about being damaged. The character Florence is portraying is suicidal but found love. She's found a place to be peaceful, yet her past and wounds still drag her to that dark. She feels unworthy, but happy she found this place to be safe. Never let me go could be a means of save me and don't give up on me. That's exactly how I feel when I listen to this song.

Song Meaning:Suicide; plain and simple. If you watch the music video, it shows her and a boy dancing around alone on an ice rink in teir socks. The couple is obviously in love, but she keeps dripping black water and oil. By the end of it, even her love for the boy and all the effort she puts out (portrayed with the soap bubbles) can't stop her from slipping into the blackness. The lyrics "never let me go" mean both that she doesn't want to be forgotten and that she doesn't want to come back to the living.

My Interpretation:I have 2 ideas for what this is about.

    A. She's finding peace in committing suicide by drowning herself at the bottom of the sea. Before she finally slips into death, she wonders if she'll go to heaven or hell.

    B. It's a metaphor for love. She's enveloped by it and using it as a requiem.
