@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday".
I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.
Oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh
Once upon a time somebody ran
Somebody ran away saying, "Fast as they can"
I got to go
I got to go
Once upon a time we fell apart
You're holding in your hands
The two halves of my heart
Oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh
Once upon a time we're burning bright
That all we ever seemed to do is fight
On and on
And on and on and on
Once upon a time on the same side
Once upon a time on the same side
In the same game, now why'd you have to go
Have to go and throw it all in my flame
Could've been a princess, you'd be a king
Could have had a castle and worn a ring
But no, you let me go
I could've been a princess, you'd be a king
Could have had a castle and worn a ring,
But no, you let me go
Stole my star
La-la-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la
You stole my star
La-la-la-la-la-la
Oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh
Oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh
'Cause you really hurt me
Oh, you really hurt me
'Cause you really hurt me
Oh, you really hurt me
'Cause you really hurt me
Oh-oh, you really hurt me
'Cause you really hurt me
Oh-oh, you really hurt me
Once upon a time somebody ran
Somebody ran away saying, "Fast as they can"
I got to go
I got to go
Once upon a time we fell apart
You're holding in your hands
The two halves of my heart
Oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh
Once upon a time we're burning bright
That all we ever seemed to do is fight
On and on
And on and on and on
Once upon a time on the same side
Once upon a time on the same side
In the same game, now why'd you have to go
Have to go and throw it all in my flame
Could've been a princess, you'd be a king
Could have had a castle and worn a ring
But no, you let me go
I could've been a princess, you'd be a king
Could have had a castle and worn a ring,
But no, you let me go
Stole my star
La-la-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la
You stole my star
La-la-la-la-la-la
Oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh
Oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh
'Cause you really hurt me
Oh, you really hurt me
'Cause you really hurt me
Oh, you really hurt me
'Cause you really hurt me
Oh-oh, you really hurt me
'Cause you really hurt me
Oh-oh, you really hurt me

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
I honestly love it when bands go in different directions. Music in itself is like one big experiment, and you don't get anywhere without trying new things. We can't all be perfect all the time, so all those people bashing this song and the suckiness of this new album, shut the fuck up. You're ruining it for everyone.
Is Mylo Xyloto Coldplay's best album? No. But it's an experiment. It's Coldplay trying something new, because if they stuck to that same stuff on Viva La Vida or X & Y, everyone would be tired and bored with the same things. That's what I love about Coldplay: their versatility when it comes to music. Viva La Vida sounded like a soundtrack to far off lands in a time long ago, and Mylo Xyloto is a peek into a future unknown. Change, whether you like it or not, isn't going to stop. Coldplay's next album will be, of course, different from this one. Don't bet on them staying the same, because they won't.
tl;dr: haters gonna hate, but take the hate elsewhere because you're ruining the music.
I think this song is about a break up.
"Once upon a time somebody ran Somebody ran away saying fast as they can About to go, I got to go"
The girl 'said' that as she left him or she is leaving him.
"Once upon a time, we fell apart You're holding in your hands the two halves of my heart"
He talks about how they broke up, and how she broke his heart.
"Once upon a time, we were burning bright"
She talks about how they once loved each other very much and had that 'spark' in their relationship.
"Now we all ever seem to do is fight On and on, and on and on and on"
And now all they do is fight.
"Once upon a time, on the same side Once upon a time, on the same side In the same game"
How they used to get along well and used to agree.
"And why'd you have to go? Have to go and throw out all of my things"
In this part, the girl feels like HE left her. Whereas in the beginning of the song he feels like SHE left him.
"I could've been the princess, you'd be a king I could have had a castle, and worn a ring But no You let me go I could've been the princess, you'd be a king I could have had a castle, and worn a ring But no You let me go"
She talks about what they could have been and how happy they could have been if the relationship had continued, but no it had to end.
"Cause she really hurt me No, you really hurt me, Cause she really hurt me No, you really hurt me, Cause she really hurt me, oh You really hurt me, oh Cause she really hurt me, oh You really hurt me"
How much the break up hurt both of them.
Oh, oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh
Once upon a time somebody ran Somebody ran away saying fast as they can About to go, I got to go Once upon a time, we fell apart You're holding in your hands the two halves of my heart Oh whoa, oh whoa
Whoa, oh oh oh, oh oh oh Once upon a time, we were burning bright Now we all ever seem to do is fight On and on, and on and on and on
Once upon a time, on the same side Once upon a time, on the same side In the same game
And why'd you have to go? Have to go and throw out all of my things
I could've been the princess, you'd be a king I could have had a castle, and worn a ring But no You let me go I could've been the princess, you'd be a king I could have had a castle, and worn a ring But no You let me go
You stole my star La la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la You stole my star La la la la la la
Oh whoa, oh whoa
Cause she really hurt me No, you really hurt me, Cause she really hurt me No, you really hurt me, Cause she really hurt me, oh You really hurt me, oh Cause she really hurt me, oh You really hurt me
I wish there were more lyrics, but this song is great. Stop QQing and get over it.
That's deep, man. Maybe you should actually come up with something to say next time, for example, why the song is great. We've told you why it sucks; tell us why it doesn't.
because their voices are amazing together, and the song has a meaning i'm pretty sure everyone can relate to. Love it. k?
Their voices might sound amazing together if Chris Martin actually had a significant role in the song, but unfortunately he's backgrounded for most of it. Their voices could sound great paired, but Chris would actually have to be singing for us to notice.

The meaning, on the other hand, is flat-out pathetic. The woman needs to get over it and grow up to respect herself instead of defining her life based on her douche bag boyfriend (yes, the lyrics DO imply that he's an ass and pretty much completely at fault here). I'm pretty sure he's not crying over leaving her clinging, needy backside behind; maybe she should grow a personality and a sense of self-worth instead of defining herself based on men and her relationships with them so she doesn't get hurt by guys like this (especially since she seems to have poor taste in men anyway).

Hell, if she became an independent, confident woman with her own life and personality, she might be able to attract the sort of guy who isn't a complete douche and user instead of dating guys like this and then crying over them leaving (when it's really not a tragedy since he was worthless anyway). Instead we have some whiny girl stuck in the past lamenting over the jerk who broke her heart and imagining an impossible future because she's already edited out all the emotional crap he put her through. Her self-revised history ensures that she'll never learn and will make the same stupid decision over and over. It's pathetic and a sad day for women everywhere.
I love Coldplay and i think this song is awesome. I've had it on repeat for about 5 days now and it gets better every time i hear it. I think it's always important to find your own meaning of a song, instead of constantly picking holes in what something's not. You don't like it, don't comment. This new sound of theirs is like a whole new dimension and i think it's important that we see this side, like with many other artists too that are so capable of being versatile. If you release all albums sounding the same you're gonna get boring. Take Muse for one. Every album has been different. And Lady Gaga. Born This Way and The Fame are like day and night. But you know what? It's working, no matter how many people hated it. I was one of those that hated it but i've now grown to love them. But anyway, it doesn't matter how many synths Coldplay use or guitars they don't, the fact of the matter is, it's music. And that's what should be important.
This is cute, really. Yeah, it's all music. And Twilight is a book, too. Just because it exists doesn't mean its good. What should be important is the artistic merit. And seeing as how this is a complete rip-off of a bland, cliche pop style, I can't find much artistic merit in there.

I'd agree that a new sound would be a good thing and would show versatility, but this isn't a new sound. It's copied from every other pop artist. Coldplay has made their own sound up to this point, but they let their style get lost under another overused and banal style in this song and throughout the album. Copying garbage isn't progression or growth.
Also, I like how everyone is rating my comments down but can't actually respond to them. Good job on not being able to counter my arguments, guys.
Well this song is about breaking up. He left her because he was afraid (which isn't reasonable) and she's trying so hard to act fine with it (you can see the way she's singing these parts you stole my heart and You really hurt me)
The princess in the title really is a reference to how one regards anyone they love so much, and value so highly.
More interestingly is the word 'china' which I think is being used ambiguously and refers to the way in which china dolls and china plates, etc. are so fragile, so easily damaged
To be honest guys, you need to understand that music changes, artists change, everything develops, and so if Coldplay want to change their sound just for ONE SONG then that's fine. You can't expect ALL their music to be the same, because it would be absolutely boring.
Secondly, you can't expect their lyrics to always be deep and meaningful. Sometimes it's good to have a song that doesn't need to be pulled apart, dissected and over-studied. That’s not the point of music; it’s meant to be listened to and enjoyed.
I personally dislike Rihanna. In fact, I’m not too keen on Coldplay either. But there’s just something catchy about this song. I’m not sure if it’s the synth sounds or the fact that their voices actually work quite well together, but I think this song is good.
So I can understand why some of you may form a negative judgement of this song, but I can honestly say that you need to refrain from getting so worked up about it. It’s just a song.
I am really pissed how most of the Mylo Xyloto songs on songmeanings.net are either wrong or incomplete, just because somebody wanted to be the first to upload. If you ever listened to this song you would know that these lyrics are incomplete.
Okay, it really, completely breaks my heart to say this, but hearing this song on the new Coldplay album was a tremendous disappointment to me... And before anyone jumps to my throat, let me add that I am avid Coldplay fan. Why, even my name says so! I've been a fan of Coldplay since the very beginning, 'Parachutes' helped me through a phase of utter depression, 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head' was going on in my CD player for months without ever taking it out, 'X&Y' brought about an interestingly fresh feeling that was something else but I loved it, and there was 'Viva La Vida', which was really different from anything before, but in the best way; it showed how far these guys had come and it absolutely blew my mind. I'm all for progress, but now here's 'Mylo Xyloto'.. And I cannot say it's a bad album, but I have a hard time calling it good... It has some songs that I really love and I can recognize my lovely Coldplay in them, but when I heard this one... I'm sorry, but I couldn't believe that this was on a Coldplay album. And I seriously don't know how Rihanna comes into the picture.
I'm really sorry for shouting out my opinion here, I know I should be talking about the lyrics, but frankly, there's not much to say about them. For me, this song is not Coldplay. I've always been a Coldplay fan and I always will be. But this song pissed me off so much, I don't know how to take it if Coldplay decides to go this way now. How could they do this? Why would they want to pretend they are a pop band instead of an alternative group with a completely unique sound - and, let me add, amazing lyrics? I completely agree with some people before me. It's breaking my heart to leave a comment like this about a Coldplay song, but this is garbage. An uncreative, uncommunicative, uninteresting piece of some kind of music. And this way, the opposite of all the Coldplay songs from the previous albums.
My heart is broken, too. What are they doing? What route are they going? I don't get why they're selling out- they have loads and loads of money, its not like getting money is the motive. Their music has helped me through (and been on repeat for)the last 10 years and is the soundtrack to my heart and life. Viva la Vida was a masterpiece and in my opinion the best album musically, lyrically, and visually to ever be released by anyone, ever. You cannot call (Mylo Zyloto? wtf?) bad, but I can. Truthfully, its awful. I heard the singles in the summer, was disappointed, but promptly reassured myself saying that they just put those crap songs out there for kicks and giggles and secretly had treasure waiting for us. I downloaded the album at midnight and after 1 pass I thought about throwing it out. All I could think was "what is this crap?" Us against the world and dont let it break your heart are barely tolerable, but I was looking (and had been waiting years) for more Swallowed in the Sea, Reign of love and Strawberry Swing (my fav songs by them, in order.)
Exactly! So many people don't seem to understand that a big part of Coldplay's appeal is that they're NOT a pop band; they're an alt band with their own sound. This sort of syth pop is a dime a dozen, and we don't need ANOTHER band doing it. New pop artists are autotuned into popularity ever day. Good alt band rarely surface, and achieving Coldplay's level of success is almost unheard of.

If some other people actually like this pop stuff, that's their prerogative. They can keep it. But those of us with some taste beyond junk pop would like to keep our good bands good, and it's a pretty big loss for us to see a band like Coldplay buckle because we have so few successful artists to begin with. And I think the worse part is that the album isn't terrible. It's just bland. It's almost more of a blow because it doesn't seem like a fluke that way.
