Once upon a time somebody ran
Somebody ran away saying, "Fast as I can"
I got to go
I got to go

Once upon a time we fell apart
You're holding in your hands
The two halves of my heart
Oh-oh, oh-oh-oh

Once upon a time we're burning bright
That all we ever seemed to do is fight
On and on
And on and on and on

Once upon a time on the same side
Once upon a time on the same side
In the same game, now why'd you have to go
Have to go and throw it all in my flame

Could've been a princess, you'd be a king
Could have had a castle and worn a ring
But no, you let me go

I could've been a princess, you'd be a king
Could have had a castle and worn a ring,
But no, you let me go

Stole my star
La-la-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la
You stole my star
La-la-la-la-la-la

'Cause you really hurt me
Oh you really hurt me
'Cause you really hurt me
Oh you really hurt me
'Cause you really hurt me
Oh-oh, you really hurt me
'Cause you really hurt me
You really hurt me

My Opinion:I honestly really dislike Rihanna but I love Coldplay so much. When I hear this song, I really liked it! Very catchy and original.

I think it's about a relationship which could have turned out brilliant and put them both in great positions in life. But they just end up hurt so it ended. They both feel lik the victim in the relationship since they both say how they were hurt by their partner.

Like what everyone else said, this is quite an easy interpretation of a Coldplay song. I personally prefer their deep meanings in their songs and how people have different interpretations, but I quite like the simplicity of the lyrics with the fresh new style of music :)

General Comment:They probably called it Princess of China just to create more imagery in our minds, and make it more dramatic and theatrical. 'Princess' would have sounded naff, 'You really hurt me' as well, and so on. It just makes it sound more other worldly, really. There's really no point in trying to dissect this song lyrically. It was just an excuse to get two fab artists together :).

My Opinion:To be honest guys, you need to understand that music changes, artists change, everything develops, and so if Coldplay want to change their sound just for ONE SONG then that's fine. You can't expect ALL their music to be the same, because it would be absolutely boring.

Secondly, you can't expect their lyrics to always be deep and meaningful. Sometimes it's good to have a song that doesn't need to be pulled apart, dissected and over-studied. That’s not the point of music; it’s meant to be listened to and enjoyed.

I personally dislike Rihanna. In fact, I’m not too keen on Coldplay either. But there’s just something catchy about this song. I’m not sure if it’s the synth sounds or the fact that their voices actually work quite well together, but I think this song is good.

So I can understand why some of you may form a negative judgement of this song, but I can honestly say that you need to refrain from getting so worked up about it. It’s just a song.

My Interpretation:I think he is talking about a relationship about a male and a female of about a off and on relationship. But they don't want to be together again they chose because in the end they say "You really hurt me." So... pretty obvious. Who would be in a relationship that they hurt each other? I sure woudn't.

My Interpretation:to me it's like couples therapy in music form haha.
they each have their turn saying what they feel and how the other person hurt them.
the entire song, they're both saying that they've been hurt so obviously they're both in the wrong in some way. so they're right about being hurt by the other. only thing is neither of them are admitting that they, too, were at fault.
and that's the way it usually is in relationships and breaking up. both persons feel like they were the victim and didn't do anything wrong.
this honestly has to be one of the easiest lyric interpretations i've ever done on a coldplay song. their lyrics are always so intricate you never really know what they were thinking when they wrote it. but the simplicity in this song makes it pretty obvious what the song means. everyone's interpretations may be slightly different but overall i think we all agree that it's about breaking up and being hurt. plain and simple.

General Comment:What I'm really confused about is the title, "Princess of China"? Am I thinking too literal on the China part, whereas it's not the country, but maybe the glass?

General Comment:I like the chorus, but only because I like Rihanna's music. So from that perspective, I don't really like any of the Coldplay parts of the song - which is a shame since it is a COLDPLAY song/album. Oh well, not all albums have perfect songs.
