In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
You lost your focus
But I got a plan for it
With a secret ingredient
And you are infinitely invited
Just leave alone the Geminis
Two of them and four of I's
(And you are infinitely Invited)
No one could not agree (it's unanimously decided)
They've come for you and me (that we're dangerously surrounded)
Their boats are full of flames
They paint the grasses green
Repeating history
They don't say what they mean
Is it amnesia?
Amamaemonesia
Mistaken for magic? (Mistaken for magic.)
Silver hours
Silver hours
Becoming a habit? (Chasing the rabbit.)
Is it amnesia?
Amamaemonesia,
Mistaken for magic? (Mistaken for magic. Mistaken for magic.)
Spacing out in a nook and cranny
It's officially uncanny
It's a fish in a sea of granite
Just leave alone the geminis
Two of them and four of I's
No one could not agree (it's unanimously decided)
They've come for you and me (that we're dangerously surrounded)
Their boats are full of flames
They paint the grasses green
Repeating history
They don't say what they mean
Is it amnesia
Amanaemonesia
Mistaken for magic (Mistaken for magic.)
Silver hours
Silver hours
Becoming a habit (Chasing the rabbit.)
Is it amnesia
Amanaemonesia
Mistaken for magic (Mistaken for magic. Mistaken for magic. Mistaken for magic.)
?
There's a system of symbols that no one will vouch for
Everyone uses, but no one believes
There's a dog in the yard with a manner that's ruff
Yet there's something about you that he understands
The girl at the window, covered in ashes
Smiles grotesquely in the light of the day
Singing in German, a cold summer warning
But I can't remember what I meant to say...
Is it Amanaemonesia
(Mistaken for magic.)
Amanaemonesia, woah
(Chasing the rabbit)
Amanaemonesia
(Mistaken for magic. Mistaken for magic. Mistaken for magic.)

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Son Şansın - Şarkı Sözleri
Hayalperest
Hayalperest
This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere.
In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.
Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
the only part i can clearly interpret in my opinion is the chorus. silver hours are the times that used to be cherished, past memories perhaps that keep on being re-thought about by someone because something like a war maybe has happened (the other lyrics; germany, flames, dangerous, they've come for you and me). i'm not too clear on that, it's probably not a war but like an idea like all good things pass, the good times seem like a dream because they're so distant. anyway i feel like the chorus is talking about drugs like chasing the rabbit who are all too fast for you to catch so you keep upping your dose to live in those silver hours and it's becoming a habit. the person thinks it's magic but those are just the effects of drugs, hallucinogenic maybe because you are infinitely invited maybe means that you'll always have a party in your head when you're high, and if you're addicted, then it's unanimously decided that you're definitely getting high. maybe the person starts to get really paranoid and thinks they've come for you and me, that we are dangerously surrounded, their boats are full of flames, they paint their grasses green. the dog in the yard that's rough probably has rabies or something and the person is walking in the street without drugs so he/she is suffering and irritable as well so he senses similar emotions emanating. this part: the girl at the window covered in ashes smiles grotesquely in the light of day singing in German the cold summer warning but I can't remember what I meant to say; it changes from "the girl" to "I" so the protagonist is talking about herself the whole time which is now revealed. she's probably just started to feel more herself again after being off whatever drugs she took, even though her appearance is ratty, she is smiling that she can care about a simple pleasure like sunlight again but she's screwed up from all the drugs that she forgets stuff ok so i guess i interpreted more than just the chorus but yeah i that's what i got
the parts i didn't interpret previously:<br /> <br /> i think at first an experienced drug user is talking to her, trying to persuade her into the lifestyle, selling it as you lost your focus but i got a plan for it with a secret ingredient (the drug or drugs)<br /> <br /> just leave along the geminis two of them and four of eyes is the most cryptic to me. i just can't really make out an interpretation of this. maybe twins (two of them) so a total would be four eyes. haha i don't know, i can only provide a concrete interpretation of that. but it reminds me of the twins in the shining, maybe don't mess with them because they're really creepy like that's when things start to go wrong. perhaps everyone using this drug is just stuck on this phrase that's just an idea that makes sense to them, maybe they always hallucinate these twins and get really scared when high.<br /> the system of symbols part makes me think the geminis has something to do with astrology though. since astrology is a pseudo-science(no one believes) like it has no proof or evidence (no one will vouch for) but it appears in most newspapers, magazines etc (everyone uses). it also makes me think of freemasonry but i don't exactly have too much of an explanation for that, just that they were a secretive group with secretive doings like maybe they set up cities (i forget what open space exactly, WA DC?) in a way that is meaningful to them but we dont really know what it means or believe it
The lyrics are nonsense. The video for the song is nonsense. The dance choreography in the video is nonsense. Even the title of the song is nonsense.
My theory: it's a song about nonsense.
I definitely agree with the earlier comment that the first verses are in reference to Aaron leaving the band, but the rest of the song seems to go on to define "amanaemonesia". Amanae itself refers to a "New Age" massage technique which harnesses emotional release. I think, with that in mind (and certainly the lyrics), "amanaemonesia" could be interpreted as the feeling of elation following an Amanae session; hence the chorus.
@turninto I like this idea. I think some other people's ideas might fit here and there....but this one fits the most imo.
I really think this song is about a lot of things. I think some of you are right about aaron leaving the band. I think the major theme is drug related though. My thinking is based not only on the chorus lyrics, but the music video.
Am I the only one that thinks that the stage looks like a tongue? She's the drug (probably some pill), and her weird dance moves involve a lot of tickling. I definitely agree with the likelihood of it being some hallucinogen as mentioned before. The spew of weird lyrics at the end I take as a description of a trip.
I definitely think its drug related. If you watch the evident utensil video, I think you'll find they definitely have used some drugs at some point! :)
It's a song about the "powers" of the world and their secret agendas. Freemasons are very esoteric, they keep secrets from the masses in order to facilitate population control: secret ingredient. Just leave alone the gemini.. Gemini are supposed to be very talkative and enjoy sharing information. Repeating History: The Masons and other secret organizations use ancient symbology and are rumored to still practice black crafts and participate in rituals that have been passed down since the dawn of civilization. These rituals and dark crafts can be, mistaken for magic.
..bunch of drug addicts<br />
I interpreted the lyrics similarly.<br /> <br /> <br /> "You lost your focus"<br /> <br /> She's taking the perspective of, I'm guessing, The Powers That Be (as general as that term may be) when she says you lost your focus, as in all of us have lost our focus–we have lost our focus.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> "But I got a plan for it"<br /> <br /> TPTB have got a plan to use our own capacities against us. TPTB hope to divert our attention to mindless activities and events, such as celebrities, new products that we just have to have, et cetera, as opposed to focusing on the bigger picture or what really matters and, of course, acting on that.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> "With a secret ingredient"<br /> <br /> The secret ingredient could be one or many things. Smoke and mirrors or thus celebrities and consumerism. Magick. Misinformation or the manipulation of language and information. Pollution and pesticides. Fear. Who knows?<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> "You are infinitely invited"<br /> <br /> Your participation is always welcomed.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> "Just leave alone the Geminis. Two of them and four of I's."<br /> <br /> Here is an excerpt from a webpage with information about the astrological significance of the Gemini sun sign: "Since Geminis are a mix of the yin and the yang, they are represented perfectly by the Twins ... They can be wishy-washy ... Mutable folks are flexible and go with the flow."<br /> <br /> astrology.com/gemini-sun-sign-zodiac-signs/2-d-d-66941<br /> <br /> According to Wikipedia, "[Gemini] is one of four mutable signs ... the planet said to be ruler of Gemini is Mercury."<br /> <br /> Also according to Wikipedia, in mythology, "[Mercury] is the patron god of financial gain, commerce, eloquence (and thus poetry), messages/communication (including divination), travelers, boundaries, luck trickery, and thieves; he is also the guide of souls to the underworld.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> "(And you are infinitely invited)"<br /> <br /> ...by Mercury, the ruler of Gemini, to the underworld?<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> "No one could not agree (it's unanimously decided)"<br /> <br /> You have no choice in the matter. Government and thus political systems, judicial systems, institutions of law, et cetera, are thrust upon by the rulers. And decidely so by society's unanimous implicit consent, by society allowing such practices to continue.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> "They've come for you and me (that we're dangerously surrounded)"<br /> <br /> ...Mercury has come for Gemini (or "the twins").<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> "Their boats are full of flames"<br /> <br /> In other words, their ships or THE ship is sinking. Flames might even be a reference to hellfire.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> "They paint the grasses green"<br /> <br /> They PAINT the grasses green, as in TPTB make things appear one way when, in fact, reality is another. You could say they pretend that things are alright, when in fact they aren't. Or in the sense of media manipulation to give off one impression isntead of another.<br /> <br /> <br /> "Repeating history"<br /> <br /> History seems to be endlessly repeating itself, with empires that rise to enslave the people and then fall.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> "They don't say what they mean"<br /> <br /> Think political speech, public relations, or newspeak.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Their power is mistaken for magick?<br /> <br /> <br /> I'll end there and leave the rest up to you.
I read in an interview once that the two current members of Chairlift (Caroline and Patrick) are both Geminis so my theory is that this is at least partially about former third member Aaron leaving the band. There is an article somewhere talking about how the fact that he was Scorpio and they were Geminis created kind of a weird dynamic as a three-piece. "You lost your focus" could be referring to that, as could "You are infinitely invited," like saying he could come back if he wants but that he would have to "leave alone the geminis" dynamic if he did. The second half gets more out there though, and I have no guess. Just my theory, could be totally off.
My first swing, so here it goes line by line: "You lost your focus But I got a plan for it With a secret ingredient And you are infinitely invited Just leave alone the Geminis Two of them and four of I's (And you are infinitely Invited)
No one could not agree (it's unanimously decided) They've come for you and me (that we're dangerously surrounded) Their boats are full of flames They paint the grasses green Repeating history They don't say what they mean"
The first two stanzas don't actually mean anything and are used to create a vague sense of mysticism, specifically aligning with astrology, a belief that is not widely held but exists as a significant rival to the stats quo: Christianity. Hearkening back to the 1969 hit Age of Aquarius by The 5th Dimension. In other words a "Hipster" nod back to an earlier era in music and culture, which is something Chairlift is all about, for reasons I can only guess at aside from having excellent taste in music.
"Is it amnesia? Amamaemonesia Mistaken for magic? (Mistaken for magic.) Silver hours Silver hours Becoming a habit? (Chasing the rabbit.) Is it amnesia? Amamaemonesia, Mistaken for magic? (Mistaken for magic. Mistaken for magic.)"
The chorus; its catchy. An urban dictionary search of "Silver Hours" finds the meaning as twilight, or dusk "when the setting sun shimmers off the water such that it has a silver sheen" It could also mean the last years of ones life.
"Chasing the Rabbit" An urban dictionary search finds the meaning as pursuing women for sex. It could also be a reference to Alice in Wonderland and chasing an idea down a metaphorical rabbit hole till one loses all sense of perspective, possibly drug induced, as is is frequently hinted at.
"Becoming a Habit" Reinforces the above possibilities.
"Is it amnesia? Amamaemonesia, Mistaken for magic?"
A thing or situation that makes you question whether or not actual magic happened or you simply forgot something important. Is it alcohol, drugs, death, or reincarnation? Are these lines just tantalizing enough to keep you interested? I dunno.
"There's a system of symbols that no one will vouch for Everyone uses, but no one believes There's a dog in the yard with a manner that's ruff Yet there's something about you that he understands The girl at the window, covered in ashes Smiles grotesquely in the light of the day Singing in German, a cold summer warning But I can't remember what I meant to say..."
At this point I'm figuring that most of this is complete nonsense, and is actually just written to change the feel of song, while maintaing a mysterious yet catchy vibe. However...
"Singing in German, a cold summer warning" a cold summer warning sounds an awful lot like "the chords are the warning" to me. German is often thought of as being harsh and difficult to understand to English speakers, but it fits the rhyme scheme of the songs lyrics. If we turn German to Germaine, and accept that "the chords are the warning" then this line is self referential commentary on the part of the songwriter as needing lyrics to fulfill a certain amount of variation in the song to maintain appeal, while also being honest as to the point of the lyrics in a less than obvious way.
After watching the youtube video.... countless times. and listening to most all of available Chairlift songs, I am almost certain the inspiration for this piece was: "a modern take on a very specific retro style"
I love this song and the video. I don't know what the lyrics might be about. Maybe some WWII relation?
One of my favorite songs right now (and possibly of all time.) I just wish I could figure out the lyrics. I am really into astrology, so I like the Gemini part. Two of them (the twins) and four of eyes. I don't really get what silver hours are. Cannot wait for an explanation! Amazing job, Chairlift.
It's really hard to tell what this means, and the tedious interpretation I give you will be based entirely on opinion. "You've lost your focus, but I've got a plan for it, with a secret ingredient... Just leave alone the Gemini's, there's two of them and four of eyes." I feel like that would be those that are in on it, they see what's happening, what's being planned, despite what everyone else has >forgotten< the meaning of. (Pay attention to the word forgot, since the chorus indeed begins with "Is it amnesia?")<br /> <br /> Silver hours makes me think of time and activities that used to be so cherished, and then became usual. Just using the word silver in it says that to me, since things of silver tend to be important to people. People >forgot< how precious the moments were. <br /> <br /> "Their boats are full of flames. They paint their grasses green. Repeating history. They don't say what they mean." At first this seems a lot like deception, but I think it's more of bright-sided thinking and denying what you feel while ending up doing everything you >forgot< was prior tried and failed.<br /> <br /> FINALLY "There's a dog in the yard with a manner that's ruff, yet there's something about you that he understands. The girl at the window covered in ashes smiles grotesquely in the light of day, singing in German, the cold summer warning, but I can't remember what I meant to say." I think, and I could be drastically over thinking, that the girl and the dog are 'the ones who know,' the Gemini, in on the plan to remind people of everything they became ignorant of.<br /> <br /> Like I said, totally opinionated, most likely inaccurate, but that's what it is to me.
hmm...silver hours becoming a habit...amnesia--chasing the rabbit
I'm going to go out on a limb and say this song is about heroin. :)
Gross.
