Now and then I think of when we were together
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it's an ache I still remember

You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end, always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I'll admit that I was glad it was over

But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No, you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over
But had me believing it was always something that I'd done
But I don't wanna live that way
Reading into every word you say
You said that you could let it go
And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know

But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No, you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Somebody (I used to know)
(Somebody) now you're just somebody that I used to know
Somebody (I used to know)
(Somebody) now you're just somebody that I used to know
I used to know, that I used to know, I used to know somebody

This is a classic example of a person that is fundamentally addicted to his need to self sabotage his romantic relationships, in order to feel something. Because he has a pervasive pattern of repeating this vicious cycle, this displays that he is actually and only capable of being in love with the somberness and pain that love can inflict but not the act of love itself.

In the first and second verse, it shows his deepest vulnerabilities, whilst he is stripped completely naked. Because he can’t be happy and appreciate what he has, he fools himself into thinking that he’s not happy in his current relationship and still cares about his ex. However, he felt the same exact way when he was with his ex because he eventually convinces himself that they’re the problem when it’s actually him. When he says he’s glad it was over, it’s because now he can begin to process what he’s done and that he really did care about that person. And that he could of been happy, if he would of allowed himself to accept love.

In the third verse, the colors that begin to surge and spread depict that he feels most alive when he is trapped and wallowing in his endless collage of self pity. His angst and actions actually show that he desires and thrives off the rejection itself, more than the actual person. He needs to begin to love himself more before he can have a real chance at loving somebody else. Otherwise they’re always going to be somebody he use to know.

Kimbra serves as the catalyst for all the women who became trapped but finally escape his chains of dysfunctional love. She too felt immersed in the colors of passion but when she transformed into baring herself, she became free.

This individual is the type that always wants what they can’t have and once they get it, they don’t want it anymore. So they go from one person to the next. And when they’re with the next person, they’re wishing they were with the first. By this time, the first has moved on. So they’re in the process of destroying their current relationship because they’re still yearning for the first one they ruined. Then they move along again to the third and repeat it again. So the second, third and so on will always be somebody he use to know.
