I'll hold your hand when you are feeling mad at me
Yeah when the monsters they won't go
The windows, they wont close
I'll pretend to see what you see

How long, I say how long, will you re-live the things that are gone?
Oh yeah the devil's on your back but I know you can shake him off
And every day that you want to waste, that you want to waste, you can
And every day that you want to wake up, that you want to wake, you can

And every day that you want to change, that you want to change, yeah
I'll help you see it through 'cause I just really want to be with you
You know its funny how freedom can make us feel contained
Yeah when the muscles in our legs aren't used to all the walking

I know if you could snap both your fingers than you'd escape with me
But in the meantime I'll just wait here and listen to you when you speak, or scream
And every day that you want to waste, that you want to waste, you can
And every day that you want to wake up, that you want to wake, you can

And every day that you want to change, that you want to change, yeah
I'll help you see it through 'cause I just really want to be with you

And every day that you want to waste, that you want to waste, you can
And every day that you want to wake up, that you want to wake, you can
And every day that you want to change, that you want to change, yeah
I'll help you see it through 'cause I just really want to be with you

Monsters, devil on your back - they both point to addiction. About liking someone, wanting to be with someone who suffers from it. They being patient, being there for them, helping them through it. They're telling them they believe in them, being positive etc. Anyone who has ever tried to be with someone with problems like this knows how difficult and frustrating it is to see someone make the same mistake over and over. This song is saying I know what your problems are, I know how you feel and I'm here for you no matter what. Sweet ain't it? :)

For me, this song doesn't have to necessarily be about loving someone with drug issues. it's loving someone with any type of internal pain, mental illness, or addiction. When I see this song, i think about someone who has had trauma in their life and now suffers with memories. "Freedom can make us feel contained" Sometimes when you experience so much pain, even when it's gone it still cages you and makes you remember, flashback. The speaker in this song is telling their lover that they will be there every single day no matter what they choose, and that they'll work through things together. It's one of the most romantic songs I've heard.

I feel like this song is about a relationship (cliche, but bare with me!). It seems like the singer is talking to their significant other, who just broke off the relationship because they had personal issues from the past (or monsters on their back) that they need to deal with before they can be a part of something bigger then themselves. To me the singer is saying: go ahead do your own thing for a bit, I'll help you sort out what you need to sort out but when this is said and done I want to be with you. However, the singer takes a somewhat irritated tone when he says "How long, I say how long, will you re-live the things that are gone? The devil's on your back but I know you can shake him of". These lines set the tone that the singer is uncomfortable and annoyed with the fact that his significant other feels the need to take time off from the relationship. However, he is still loyal to them and wants to have them around C:

This song reminds me of me and my boyfriend. __ Sadly, I am the crazy one. My dad used to drink all the time and I used to be in an awful religion that really messed with my head.

When we met 6 years ago, I was scared that the world was going to end and everyone I loved would die very very soon. Every single day I would freak out about it at least once because the church pounded it into my head three times a week. He was still my friend and he was there for me and listened to me every time I got that way and would tell me why what they said was wrong.

Over this whole time, he helped me get out of that religion, helped me do something about my dad's drinking, he showed me that I was beautiful, that I could have hopes and dreams, and that a person could still love me despite my issues.

The people from the church still send me messages in my email or on facebook sometimes about how I need to come back and they show me things that they think mean the world is just about to end, or I'll see things on the news, or something else will trigger it and I'll get scared like that again and he is still right there for me to tell me everything will be okay.

He's patient with me even though he's very busy with school. Much more patient than I deserve. I know I'm being stupid, but I can't do a lot about it. He loves me so very much. He is my angel and I owe him my life for rescuing me and always being there to "help me see it through". I really love that guy and I know I am incredibly lucky.

About some one stuck in a trip, reliving the past and/or in a series of loops...the person wants to help but cant/wont push too hard(for any reason) to help them get out of it.

''I hold your hand when you are feeling mad at me'' because there is a lot of searching and emotional revelations and they might be about that person.

"When the monsters wont go, your windows dont close,I pretend to see what you see'' To see their illusions, hallucinations and the problems they are stuck on. He tries to pretend to see to try to understand the situation.

"How long will you relive the things that are gone, the devils on your back i know you can shake him off'' How long will they be stuck in this trip, about the past, stuck in the problems and loop and they cant get out of it. Maybe for a reason unkown the person cant figure out how to shake the problems but its possible(hopefully possible)

''Everyday that you want to waste, you can. Everyday that you want to wake up, you can. Everyday that you want to change, I'll help you see it through cause I just really want to be with you'' Everyday longer they are stuck in the trip, wasting time in it he wont rush it. Everyday, anyday, that they chose to wake up from the trip they can and he would like it to be with them. Every day that you want to change, change the problems that you are stuck on, maybe its a habbit they cant break to get out of this trip or to hit a revalation to wake up he wants them to change to do it. He wants to help because he wants to be with ''you''

''Freedom can make us feel contained, the muscles in our legs arent used to all the walking, i know if you could snap both your fingers you'd escape with me but in the meantime ill wait here and listen to you when you speak or scream'' The users mind cant handle the freedom of the trip, they could be on about anything but they are stuck in that one problem or one group of problems. The user is not use to all the walking(roaming, thought jumping) He knows that if the user could snap right out of it, to make a wish to get out of it, they would if they could. But he has to sit there or be with them through the random thoughts they talk, or the screams...

''the truth cuts us and pulls up back up and seperates the things that look the same, you can fight it off you can fight it off you can...'' The truth that they are trying to seek might hurt but its something they need to realize to get out of this...to hit that moment of awakening...it seperates the things that look the same(you might never realize youre in the trip because things SEEM the same) He knows that they can fight it off...fight it off and hopefully wake up.

To me this song represents the immense strength and courage we all gain when we are truly loving someone. When we say to someone that "every day that you want to waste, you can" we are ultimately saying that I'm truly here for you no matter what happens to us. The line where it says "freedom can make us feel contained" is important and it's about the responsibility involved with freedom and how we pick up one thing to let the other thing go. And that's why when we love it doesn't matter what gets wasted because we are able to live with our decisions in the fact that we've made those decisions with love and honesty :)

Yeah obviously this song is about dealing with the complications of loving someone who is suffering from mental illness. And also, this is probably the saddest Foster the People song.

I think this song is a song that is written as a song from God to man. "The devil's on your back but I know you can shake him off". With God you can. "And every day that you want to change, you want to change, yeah" . You can change whenever you want to, but it's up to you, just trust and have faith in God. We all have things in our lives that we want to change, and it's not easy, but if we want to just trust in Him and He will help us through it, but we need to want to. "I'll help you see it through because I really want to be with you." GOD WANTS TO BE WITH US and will help us through anything, no matter what, as hard as it is, we just need to have faith in Him. We need to trust in Him. He loves us and has done what it takes on His part to be with us for eternity, but we, too, need to want to be with Him and do our part.

This song is about loving someone so much you are able to give them the space and time to make choices for themselves--even if it means the relationship will suffer.

Love and patience--how can someone not come back?! Impossible!

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
