Do you still feel younger than you thought you would by now
Or, darling, have you started feeling old yet
Don't worry, I'm sure that you're still breaking hearts
With the efficiency that only youth can harness
And do you still think love is a Laserquest
Or do you take it all more seriously
I've tried to ask you this in some daydreams that I've had
But you're always busy being make-believe
And do you look into the mirror to remind yourself you're there
Or have somebody's good-night kisses got that covered
Well I'm not being honest, I'll pretend that you were just some lover

Now I can't think of air without thinking of you
I doubt that comes as a surprise
And I can't think of anything to dream about
I can't find anywhere to hide
And when I'm hanging on by the rings around my eyes
And I convince myself I need another
And for a minute it gets easier to pretend that you were just some lover

When I'm pipe and slippers and rocking chair
Singing dreadful songs about something
Well I've found a better method of pretending you were just some lover
Well I've found a better method of pretending you were just some lover

My Interpretation:This is an absolutely perfect break up song, beautifully sung and so sad.

Do you still feel younger than you thought you would by now
Or, darling, have you started feeling old yet

(she was always quite young and immature and shes always dreamed of growing up naturally but its just not happened)

Don't worry, I'm sure that you're still breaking hearts
With the efficiency that only youth can harness

(Pretty self explanitory, saying she's still beautiful and young)

And do you still think love is a Laserquest
Or do you take it all more seriously

(Think the way he sings this is beautiful because he sounds so heartbroken and like he's falling apart, basically I take this as meaning that the couple had a messy break up, they're both broken hearted and helpless without each other so he's asking if shes done playing games and saying in a kind of cynical, sarcastic way "is this still fun?"

I've tried to ask you this in some daydreams that I've had
But you're always busy being make-believe

( this has no reference to drugs or even litterly meaning she's the one playing make believe, this is him saying how he has practiced in his head a million times what to say to her but it's all in his head, make beleive like its just his thoughts of her)

And do you look into the mirror to remind yourself you're there
Or have somebody's good-night kisses got that covered

(He knows she's feeling numb so asking her if she has to look in the mirror to realise any of this is real or does she get reminded by feeling instead by having sex with different men)

Well I'm not being honest, I'll pretend that you were just some lover

(think this is a great description of what people have to do when they break up, just pretend yeah they were just someone I had a thing with or whatever when really she touched his life far more than he can even explain)

Now I can't think of air without thinking of you
I doubt that comes as a surprise

(everything reminds him of her and he knows she knows what a state hes in about her)

And I can't think of anything to dream about
I can't find anywhere to hide

(he never escapes his thoughts about her)

And when I'm hanging on by the rings around my eyes
And I convince myself I need another

(he's barely living anymore and he can't sleep, always has rings round his eyes and looks ill, he tries to convince himself he should find another girl)

And for a minute it gets easier to pretend that you were just some lover

(he likes to pretend she was just a lover nothing really important and that makes it easier)

When I'm pipe and slippers and rocking chair
    Singing dreadful songs about something

(I think this is him saying he knows they will get back together and this time they'll stay forever, like hes talking about them growing old together)

Well I've found a better method of pretending you were just some lover
Well I've found a better method of pretending you were just some lover

(He's found a better method, he's told her instead of pretending its not killing him, he's being open no matter how embarrasing it is)

General Comment:Beautiful love song with some psychedelic images in it:
"I've tried to ask you this in some daydreams that I've had" He's tripping with serious goals: communication, self-knowledge, etc
"But you're always busy being make-believe" The other person is getting stoned just for fun
"And do you look into the mirror to remind yourself you're there" mirrors are extremely psychedelic, i.e. Alice through the looking glass.
"I can't find anywhere to hide" LSD makes you vulnerable, you can't hide, you can't lie. Look for example at Dance Little Liar.
"rings around my eyes" if you trip you won't sleep

So it can be at the same time about love AND about drugs... If you kids can't accept it, worse for you.

My Interpretation:In my opinion, this song is about a boy reuniting with a girl who broke his heart. He sees this girl years after they dated. The boy fell deeply in love with the girl, but she didn't believe in love, she thought everything was just fun and games, so she broke his heart. This song is about the meeting between the two, and he asks her if she believes in love now or if she still just toys with people hearts.

Also, the song has a sad connotation to it. In the lines where he speaks about "pretending you were just some lover" he's admitting that he really was in love with her and its been hard for him to get over it.

I think this song is absolutely beautiful and the lyrics are genius.

General Comment:A song that provokes bittersweet emotions.

I think this song is about a hopeless romantic who fell in love with a girl who was not interested in love and who thought of love as a fantasy (think Zooey Deschanel in 500 Days of Summer). This girl probably thought of love as a foolish game, and now he wonders if she still thinks the same or is she has now finally understood what love is. He may or may not have been in a relationship with her , she is the one who got away, and he will always wonder What if? He has probably had many lovers but he will never forget that one girl, so he'll pretend she was just another lover.

General Comment:This is a song about a girl who broke boy's heart. He knows her very well, they probably have been in a relationship.

Do you still feel younger than you thought you would by now
(is she still young careless girl)

Or darling have you started feeling old yet?
(or is she starting to be more mature)

Don't worry I'm sure that you're still breaking hearts
(sarcasm, he is sure she's still breaking other people's hearts)

With the efficiency that only youth can harness
(he thinks she's still young careless girl)

And do you still think love is a laserquest
(love for her is nothing serious, she probably never loved anyone before)

Or do you take it all more seriously?
(or does she finally realized that love is serious thing)

I've tried to ask you this in some daydreams that I've had
(he still thinks about her all the time)

But you're always busy being make believe
(he probably tries to contact her but she's always avoiding him)

And do you look into the mirror to remind yourself you're there
    (is she alone tonight)

Or has somebody's goodnight kisses got that covered?
    (or sleeps with someone tonight)

When I'm not being honest I pretend that you were just some lover
(he tries convince himself that she's not important to him, never was)

Now I can't think of air without thinking of you
(but he can't live without her)

I doubt that comes as a surprise
(she know's that he's still in love with her so bad)

And I can't think of anything to dream about
(he cant think of any other girl)

I can't find anywhere to hide
(whatever he does, he thinks about her, cant forget)

And when I'm hanging on by the rings around my eyes
(he drinks heavily just to kill the pain of the broken heart)

And I convince myself I need another
(he tries to convice himself that any other girl would be way better)

For a minute it gets easier to pretend that you were just some lover
(for a minute it feels better, just thinking that she's not important to him)

When I'm pipe and slippers and rocking chair
(he thinks that life is not worth living without her)

    Singing dreadful songs about something
(still thinking about death, he cant think sober)

Well I've found a better method of pretending you were just some lover?
(he's not sure if suicide is the answer, he probably just wants to talk to her, at least)

Well I've found a better method of pretending you were just some lover?

My Interpretation:Suck It And See (MRpsycho's analysis)

    01 - "She's Thunderstorms"

    Boy meets Girl.
And he falls in love with her unpredictability, her beauty, and her mind. Boy can't believe he's found someone who is fearless.
"...She came and substituted the peace and quiet for Acrobatic blood flow…"

Boy senses that she is withholding secrets,
just like himself and everyone else on the World.
"…She's thunderstorms, lying on her front, up against the wall..."

"…When you're feeling far away, she does what the night does to the day…"
Like in a thunderstorm, Boy wonders whether the future with this new love can survive this cruel, judging world. But ultimately he chooses to "Suck It And See"

    02 - "Black Treacle"

Girl introduces Boy to her secret vice. Marijuana. He has never experienced it before but because he loves Girl, he trusts her.
"….And I don't mean to rain on anybody's cabriolet, One of those games you're going to lose, But you want to play it just in case"

Their relationship blossoms but he still asks questions about her fix, which has become his fix.
"…Does it help you stay up late? Does it help you concentrate? Does it tune you in when you chew your chin? Am I ruining your fun?"

"…More like Black Treacle, than Tar…"
She proves that she can still be a strong woman and maintain a healthy social life while still smoking recreationally.

"…And you talk the talk alright, but do you walk the walk or catch the train…"
Boy and Girl become intimate lovers….their future looks great, but Boy continues to wonder whether this bliss will last.

    03 - "Brick by Brick"

As he tries to figure out what Girl loves, Boy plays his guitar with his band for the first time whilst stoned.

"I wanna break you down, Brick by Brick, I'm gonna reconstruct, Brick by Brick, I wanna feel your love"

He has to slowly get the hang of his new perspective of music "I want a blow by blow, Brick by Brick"

and he eventually chooses to go on tour and rock out with his new found Grace. "Brick by Brick, I want an episode…"
Girl still loves his music but doesn't like the fact that he's headed on tour.

04 - "The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala"

"…Just when things are getting complicated in the eye of the storm.."

Boy and Girl begin to grow distant due to Boy always on tour. She tells him that if he gets high, she'll be there with him in the back of his mind. And it will remind him of all the mesmerizing things they've done together.

"…she flicks a red hot revelation off the tip of her tongue…"

It's as if she appears out of thin air and it helps him rock out, but in the end…it's only an illusion…and they begin to slip into a downward spiral.

"Home sweet home, home sweet home, home sweet Booby trap"

He continues to rock and hopes Girl will understand and be cool with his fame…

"…Her steady hands may well have done the Devil's pedicure, What you waiting for! Sing another fucking Shalalala…."

05 - "Don't Sit Down 'Cause I've Moved Your Chair"

Boy and Girl continue having arguments every so often and they begin to play games with each other…

"Do the macarena in the devil's lair, but just Don't Sit Down 'Cause I've Moved Your Chair"

this effects Boy and his bands music as being effected by the changing times, their sound begins to change as well and they start taking risks.

"…Break the mirror, roll the dice, run with scissors through a chip pan fire fight…"

Tension grows as Boy tells his fans that he's changed and he's ready to live the true Rocker lifestyle.

"…Bite the lightening, and tell me how it tests…"

Boy and Girl separate due to this new lifestyle.

    06 - "Library Pictures"

Boy begins to feel depressed but he utilizes his intelligence and music, and he begins seeing the true potential in himself and his brain. His brain is wired of drugs like lightening…
"Library pictures of the quickening canoe, the first of it's kind to get to the moon" = he speaks of life "Organizers/Memory Banks/Brains of the Accelerating Universe"… and we're the first of the animals to get to the moon

Life is still confusing and fast as fuck but he remembers only the negative memories of Girl in order to rebel and feel as if he was right in their arguments.

"Been watching all the neon blossom, flickering…"

He knows human civilization is moving forward in the fast life of the Information Age and so must he… his band's sound evolves again, as he feels completely free to explore new territory….

"…You look as if you've all forgotten where you've been…"

07 - "All My Own Stunts"

As life begins to slow down, he begins to ponder the relationship with Girl and whether or not to go back to her. Whenever he's out at clubs, bars…he's wondering what she's doing. Whenever he tries to get high, he thinks of her immediately and begins to miss her.

"Been watching cowboy films, on gloomy afternoons, tinting the solitude"

It hits Boy that his stunts caused so much pain for people in his life. "…All my Own Stunts!! High noon has changed it's tune…"

He's mad at himself and attempts to restore his Reputation and simply, he wants to be happy again.

"…Show me what to do, I know you've got the moves"

    08 - "Reckless Serenade"
A depressed Boy knows he is a rockstar and he knows he can get any Girl he wants. He begins to slow down and relaxes with friends and new lovers that he meets.

"Illuminations, on a rainy day, when she walks her footsteps sing a Reckless Serenade"

He wonders what we're all here for and whether his rock music will stand the test of time, after it all it is just a mirror of his life and right now it's a "Reckless Serenade"

"I've been trying to figure out exactly what it is I need, called up to listen to the voice of reason and got his answering machine…"

A lonely Boy tries to contact Girl and she accepts his offer to meet up, as friends. As they remember their good times together, Boy wonders whether she could ever really care about him again….

"The type of kisses where teeth collide, when she laughs the heavens hum a stun gun lullaby…"

    09 - "Piledriver Waltz"

Girl gives Boy some news, she has met someone else. Boy is shocked *ALARM GOES OFF(the beat)* and he begins to examine his life differently again because he thought he had her...

"…I heard an unhappy ending…it sorta sounds like you're leaving…"

he stops thinking about his emotions for Girl as he sees that they look happy together. Whenever Boy and Girl talk now, her new Boyfriend always comes up and it's like a endless stab to the heart.

"You look like you've been for breakfast in the Heartbreak Hotel…"

He decides to ignore Girl's calls as he is too heartbroken to listen…and now his sound is filled with sorrow, not the Rock'n'Roll he anticipated…. but he's gotta play in order to pull through this…

"…If you're gonna try and walk on water make sure you wear your comfortable shoes…"

    10 - "Love Is A Laserquest"

Boy waits for Girl to break up with her new Boyfriend…he wonders if the two of them have arguments like Boy and Girl had..he wonders if they are taking their love seriously and wants to just hold her like he used to.

"…And do you still think Love is a laser quest or do you take it all more seriously? I've tried to ask you this in some daydreams that I've had but you're always busy being make believe…"

All he wants is for her New boyfriend to treat her right…better than he ever did. He attempts to get high with marijuana like he used to, but he knows it will remind him of her…but that's what he wants.

"When I'm pipe and slippers and rocking chair, singing dreadful songs about summer…Will I have found a better method of pretending you were just some lover?"

So he begins smoking because for those minutes of bliss…it's like Girl is holding him in his arms and singing about love together….

"…For a minute it gets easier to pretend that you were just some lover…"

His new method is to escape with the thing she introduced to him and find a way to move on.

11 - "Suck It And See"

Boy reflects on his decision to "Suck It And See" and he realizes that no matter how things turn out…Good or Bad, it's worth the experience and gives you true wisdom. And wants to keep changing himself whenever he gets bored of current him.

"That's not a skirt girl, that's a sawn off shotgun, and I can only hope you've got it aimed at me"

He smokes occasionally and thanks Girl for introducing him to something that can calm his nerves and remind him of their good times. He wants to keep changing and never stay in one place.

"…Suck It And See, you never Know…Sit next to me, before I go"

Even though they had their fuck-ups, they also had moments of love and laughter.

"Your love is like a studded leather headlock, your kiss it could put creases in the rain"

He still thinks about Girl and knows that wherever she is …at least she's happy.

"You have got that face that just says 'baby I was made to break your heart'"

    12 - "That's Where You're Wrong"

Boy takes control of his life and vows to use the experience for good. And spread the word that love is always worth the trip.

"Sitting on the floor with a tambourine, crushing up a bundle of love…don't take it so personally, you're not the only one"

Boy feels great and for the first time in months,
knows that he'll prove all haters wrong in the future because he's back on top of shit, and will try to never let his personal problems make him go through all the changes he went through during the course of Arctic Monkey's fourth studio effort.

"All the old flames…fastened on, Make a wish that…weighs a tonne, There are no handles...you can hold, and no Understanding…where it goes…"

General Comment:I love this song remind me so much of some one I still love from this day on I understand the pain of it when he says
when I'm hanging on by the rings around my eyes
And I convince myself I need another
And for a minute it gets easier to pretend that you were just some lover

Mostly all of the arctic monkeys songs remind me of a good memory or a bad one or thing iv seen or experienced so when he sings the songs I fully understand how he feel x

Love the group though there pretty successful to say they only been going around now for I think 5 - 6 years lol

General Comment:The end line of the song is actually "WILL I have found a better method of pretending you were just some lover" not "Well I've found".

That should change your understanding of the song. The verses are ways in which he tries to find a way to get over the girl. The first verse seems to be about how he escapes in his mind, fantasizing about hypothetical conversations with her. The second verse he's clearly speaking about drinking or some sort of intoxication and how it makes it easier to get over her.

And finally he thinks toward the future, pondering the ways that he'll get over her then.

It's a sad "the one that got away" song. It's interesting because it's more about the singer's psychology than his emotions or the relationship itself.

    General Comment:the song.
it's about the one girl you never get over, and she's the girl no body ever gets over.he's aware of this, but the really haunting part is the last line *Well I've found a better method of pretending you were just some lover*...i kept wondering what the better method was,and it's not alzheimer's=)...but the meaning of the song is that even when he'll be old and gray, he still won't be able to get over her,he'll still be PRETENDING she's just some lover,it will still be selfdeception, just a little wiser, but he will still be painfully aware that she wasn't just some lover.i think that this song is so horribly truthful and painful that you can only pretend and deceive yourself that it's going to stop,or that you'll be able to cope someday.
