June was the lobster shell I dug by hand
A haven that hid me well beneath the sand
The wide windy waves washed in, but I stayed dry
The great breakers broke again, as I nodded off inside

And then, when the Empress ran aground,
And my eyes turned blue and green,
I heard a gorgeous sound,
And that's when it became a dream
When the sky fell in,
When the hurricanes came for me,
I could finally crash again,
And that's how I became the sea

I wrenched the engines off and drank them down
The depths turned the iron soft as they swiftly drowned
And I brought the ocean side to its rusty knees
As I felt the eventide deep in my shallow dreams

And then, when the Empress ran aground,
And my eyes turned blue and green,
I heard a gorgeous sound,
And that's when it became a dream
When the sky fell in,
When the hurricanes came for me,
I could finally crash again,
And that's how I became the sea

When the sky fell in (When the sky fell in)
When the hurricanes came for me
I could finally crash again,
And that's how I became the sea (How I became the sea)
That's how I became the sea (How I became the sea)
That's how I became the sea

When the sky fell in,
When the hurricanes came for me
I could finally crash again,
And that's how I became the sea

How I became the sea.

My Interpretation:I think this song is the story of his career. He starts the song talking about "June", which could be referring to "Of June". It was his first release and completely independent (dug by hand). From there he started gaining more attention, "waves" of fans and potential fame, but he was content to "stay dry" of them and hide inside his small shell, restricting himself to the satisfaction of having a released EP. "Nodding off inside" might even refer to the "Maybe I'm Dreaming" album.

After that, he sings about the fame he gained from Ocean Eyes ("when my eyes turned blue and green"). The "gorgeous sound" could be referring to the album itself, or perhaps the sound of a full crowd of cheering fans. At that point, his whole world changed as he was shoved into the limelight, like a ship (the Empress) crashing into his life. However, the opportunity allowed him to become a part of something bigger (the sea), which could refer to a message he's trying to spread with his music or the repeating cycle of the music industry he often speaks of.

The next part may be a prediction for the future of his career. He begins tearing the ship, his fame, apart and it slowly disappears into the sea (more evidence that the sea refers to the cycle). Even in the midst of his successful career ("shallow dreams"), he can feel his fame coming to an end (the end of its day, its "eventide").

Emotionally speaking, the song overall is about the exhilarating feeling of suddenly being shoved into something much bigger than yourself, and allowing yourself to become a part of it.

General Comment:After a lot of discussion with my self, I've finally decided this song as my favorite song. I heard it live 20 days ago, and it was amazing. I love this song so much. The only thing is, I really can't understand what it is about. xD I agree that it wears resemblences and things that describes Titanic, but seriously, I can't imagine Adam just writing a song about Titanic. xD He always has a deeper meaning to his songs.

General Comment:I think the song is about a event that made him break down but then when that what made the event happen, stopped appering, he became calm and faught against that what strained him.

I don´t know if it´s right like this and I´m not really able to describe what i think, but that´s the best what i could bring down xD

General Comment:Does this remind anyone else of the Titanic?

    "...When the Empress ran aground"
"I wrenched the engines off and drank them down / The depths turned the iron soft..."

    Love this song.
