I survived a dreadful accident,
In the car crash of the century,
My shattered hopes collapsed on cold cement,
But in the back of the ambulance, I'd never felt so content.
A high-speed collision gave a new sense of sight to me,
And now my vision can render the scene,
A blurry image of wreckage and roadside debris,
Happiness returned to me through a grave emergency.
Da da da, da da da,
Da da da, da da da.
I tossed and turned, in sterile apathy,
Until the violets arrived for me,
The bouquet burst and blossoms filled the room,
And the police got smaller as they grew taller,
And taught me to bloom.
A high-speed collision gave a new sense of sight to me,
And now my vision can render the scene,
A blurry image of wreckage and roadside debris,
Happiness returned to me through a grave emergency.
The curtains decayed, the daylight poured in,
I was never afraid, of the darkness again,
My burns were third degree,
But I'd been set free,
'Cause grace had finally found its way to me.
A high-speed collision gave a new sense of sight to me,
And now my vision can render the scene,
A blurry image of wreckage and roadside debris,
Happiness returned to me,
Da da da, da da da,
Happiness returned to me,
Da da da, da da da,
Happiness returned to me,
Through a grave emergency.
Da da da, da da da,
Da da da, da da da,
Through a grave emergency.
Da da da, da da da,
Da da da, da da da,
Happiness returned to me,
Through a grave emergency

Firstly, we have a car crash - this is probably just a metaphor used to cover a wide base of horrible happenings.
After that, we have 'shattered hopes collapsed' on the 'cold cement'. The hopes are not metaphorical, but the cement can be interpreted as the scene of the accident, whatever you assume it to be, or even, if it's something to do with love - simply a background, or your heart.
'But in the back of the ambulance, I've never felt so content' - this is saying that even in all of his misery and pain - as could be experienced in a break-up, or some sort of accident, as emotional pain, sorrow, worry or depression - he resented himself for what ever went wrong so much that he took joy in the pain that it caused himself. It could also mean that he hit the other 'driver' pretty hard, or that he simply enjoyed the drama and thrill of the accident.
The next four lines can be interpreted as one of the comments above me said - the accident re-energising his life, or giving him some insight that allowed him to enjoy his life again.
'I tossed and turned, in sterile apathy,
Until the violets arrived for me,'
The tossing and turning is his emotions getting to him and disturbing him, and the blossoms could be interpreted as a present for him, handed to him by a family member or a loved one, as later he says 'The bouquet burst, and blossoms filled the room, and the place got smaller as they grew taller and taught me to bloom.' - this is him using the gift to entertain himself, and losing interest in his surroundings, as one might when he or she falls in love: focusing solely on the person they like, and losing interest in everything else.
The next two lines contain few new parts - 'A blurry image or roadside debris' meaning that he saw all the damage that it caused.
I have no actual idea as to what the next two lines mean, other than that he stopped resenting everything to do with whatever caused the accident, and began to understand it instead.
He then finally begins to recover, and sees fully the bright side that he's been taking peaks at all of this time, leaves his metaphorical hospital of sorrow and regret, and goes out ready to start over in a new principle.
Just my personal opinion, but I think I'm pretty good at finding meanings in these things, even if not the intended ones.
I'll start this by saying I'm not a very religious person. I've sort of developed my own beliefs, mixed from all sorts of different backgrounds and I love that Adam has left this song sort of open ended because it means I can apply it to myself personally as well.
When I first realized it was religious it was a little weird for me honestly, but then I realized that he's not pushing anything on anyone. I think this song has sort of pushed me to find something that could let me live without being afraid and I think it's good to have that, whatever it is. My version of God might not match anyone else's but it doesn't matter because that's not how it needs to be. I'm not sure if this is how he intended it, but it's good to find the kind of strength and faith that he's found by the end of this song whatever that is for you, be it God, or just love, or optimism, or your family.
As I said, I'm not religious, but it is nice sometimes to be around a religious group of people because they have something that won't be moved no matter what and it makes them happy.
Beautiful song.
After the experience he has learn more about himself and wont be scared of anything again as he has come so near to death that little worries dont matter anymore and by going through the adversity of hospital he has new strength for any other challenges. ("I was never afraid of the darkness again, My burns were third degree, but I'd been set free, Cause grace had finally found its way to me") He was set free from life and people as he knows the true perspective on life and what reality really means and he knows a new perspective on life.
It is my interpretation, for I can relate. This is my favorite song from new album. :)
Anywho...this song is so beautiful and so personal-feeling. It's these kinds of songs that make me feel like I know the guy. Then the religious part chimes in and it hits me: he has no idea who I am. I understand him completely, and he's probably only ever read a few of my blog comments...and forgotten them.
Yay! for first comment
